1. Reduce Marine Sound Pollution

Our planet's oceans have become a very noisy place. Places like New York and LA no longer compare to the noise pollution of our oceans. This increase in noise has caused many hundreds, if not thousands, of marine animals to die from stranding themselves on beaches to dieing from organ failure and bleeding in the brain.

2. Stop Wal-Mart from Selling Live Fish

On April 14th, 2012, I bought 4 fish from Wal-Mart’s pet department in Sterling, VA ( store#2038). The sales associate indicated that those fish were suitable to live in a bowl and did not need a filtration system.

After taking the fish home, something didn't feel right and 14 hours later I took the fish to an aquatic specialist who told me that the fish should've never been sold in a bowl and are already displaying signs of sickness, their only hope for survival would be for Wal-Mart to put them back in their familiar environment and treat them. I went back to Wal-Mart, sick to my stomach with that information and asked to speak to the store manager. An associate came a few minutes later saying the store did not have a store manager at this point, they are going to hire a new manager in the coming days, however he was very sorry about what happened and would be glad to refund all of my money. I told him I wanted to make sure that the staff was trained appropriately and I would like to follow up and know what is going to happen to the fish since they needed medical treatment at this point. He told me "all fish that are returned at Wal-Mart, get destroyed", so there is nothing more he could do. Get this people; whenever you buy a live fish from Wal-Mart and return it for whatever reason, Wal-Mart kills the fish.

The multi-million dollar company doesn't want to invest to properly take care of these creatures and would dispose of every single fish being returned to them in the cruelest way possible just to cut costs. Needless to say, I refused the refund and took the fish back, after speaking to the aquatic specialist again, he told me I had 4 days to find a new habitat for the fish before they die, so I am currently looking for an organization, or an individual with a pond that would be willing to adopt these fish that would get murdered if returned at Wal-Mart. Given Wal-Mart’s business model and policy about these animals, they will never give proper care to the fish. This is a terrible act of animal cruelty, so please sign this petition to stop the suffering of thousands of fish at Wal-Mart.

Killing every fish that is returned to the store is a crime, it is inhumane and an utter disregard to the lives of these beautiful and helpless fish which are trusted to Wal-Mart's Care. No animal should ever be treated this way, allowed to suffer endlessly until its death!!!!

4. Take Shark Fin Soup Off the Menu in BC, Canada

100-150 million sharks are killed every year. In the past 20 years, shark population has decreased by 90%. Scientists predict that within the next 15-20 years, sharks will be completely wiped out.

The are the most important species on Earth, simply because they control levels further down on the food pyramid, as tertiary consumers, and therefore the oxygen levels in the ocean, which controls everything on earth, as it covers 2/3 of the Earth's surface.

Please protect this beautiful creature, and ban the act of shark finning. It starts out locally, but when brought to a global perspective can change the situation dramatically. The slaughter of sharks will soon affect you, so please, take action and sign the petition.

Thank you.

FACTS ABOUT OUR GREAT LAKES:

•At 17,500 kilometres, the total length of Great Lakes shorelines is equal to almost 44 per cent of the circumference of the Earth.
•The drainage basin of the Great Lakes covers about 775,000 square kilometres — an area the size of France.
•40 million people living in Canada and the U.S. get their drinking water from the Great Lakes.
•One quarter of Canada's agricultural production is grown in the Great Lakes Basin.
•Less than 1 per cent of the waters of the Great Lakes are replaced each year by rain and snow, surface water runoff, and groundwater flowing into the lakes.
•At least 185 non-native species have been introduced to the Great Lakes. On average a new aquatic invasive species arrives every six to nine months.
•Lake Superior has the largest surface area of any freshwater lake in the world and is the largest, deepest and coldest of the Great Lakes.
•Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron is the largest freshwater island in the world, and one of more than 32,000 islands in the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River.
•Lake Erie, the shallowest of the Great Lakes, supports the largest walleye fishery in the world.

6. Legalize Freshwater Spearfishing

State regulations in Tennessee currently prohibit the taking of gamefish, excluding catfish, by any means other than angling (hook and line).

Freediving, the sport of diving without SCUBA equipment, and spearfishing are becoming increasingly popular. The desire to take a limited number of freshwater gamefish for consumption, by this method, is growing as well. With spearfishing, bycatch is eliminated. Spearfishing, specifically freediving and spearfishing, is a strenuous and challenging sport and it is not an attempt to make taking fish easier. Spear fishers, many of whom are also hook and line anglers, find it to be contradictory that in big game hunting the quarry may be shot but not baited; whereas in fishing, the quarry must be baited but not shot.

It seems that regulations follow the dollars signs of the big sporting industries, eg. bass boats, and bass tournaments, and don't give fair opportunity to those who would use other methods to pursue the same species. If a bass fisherman is allowed to harvest eight bass after hooking and possibly injuring ten others why can't a spear fisher harvest one bass, walleye, trout, or any other gamefish open to harvest by anglers?

Utah and Arkansas are two states that have already adopted regulations that allow spearfishing for freshwater gamefish. Freshwater tournaments are held annually in these states and spear fishers from all over the country come to these events because there is no opportunity in their own state. It would be to Tennessee's benefit to bring some of this economic activity back home.

9. Protection of the lakeshore within the town of Wabamun

The Village Council of Wabamun is requesting approval from the Alberta Government to develop the lands south of the CN railway track in the town of Wabamun. This area is an important wetlands for Wabamun lake. It serves as an important bird nesting area and a major fish spawning area.

The vegetation in this area also serves to maintain the lake's water quality. In addition, the area is not suitable for development as there is no strong foundation to build on. The marshy area would require excessive gravel fill to create a suitable building area. This alteration to the lake's natural shoreline would further disrupt the lake.

Plans for the development can be seen here. http://www.wabamun.ca/life/documents/Web_Package.pdf

10. Restore the Historic Copano Fishing Pier!

The Aransas County Navigation District has a spectacular idea for renovating and modernizing the historic Copano Fishing Piers while the new Causeway is being constructed. If funding can be found, the proposed renovation would be at no cost to the citizens of Aransas County or the Aransas County Navigation District.

The purpose of this petition, along with resolutions from the Aransas County government entities and various non-profit organizations, is to clearly demonstrate that this project is of interest to our community.

11. Ban Fishing around NC Piers

The N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission need to enact a law making a one mile exclusion zone around piers to all fishing vessels. This should include all netting, trolling, gigging, and fishing of all types.

By making fishing inside of on mile of a pier an arrestable offense, which would only make twenty miles of the North Carolina coast no boat fishing zone out of the three hundred and one miles of coast line, this will improve the pier(s) business, and keep the pier(s) a viable place to fish without the threat of losing fish or terminal tackle to vessels fishing.

The lack of this law also creates safety issues to occupants on fishing vessels and occupants on the pier(s). By pushing these vessels out would greatly reduce the risk of collisions.

12. Save The Wenlock

Our aim is two-fold:
1) (WE'VE WON THIS ONE - WENLOCK RIVER DECLARED WILD BY THE QLD GOVT - 4 JUNE 2010) To have the Wenlock River declared a 'wild' river under the Wild Rivers Act 2005, &
2) To deny mining rights to Cape Alumina Pty Ltd to mine bauxite (or any other resource) in the Wenlock River basin and Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve.

Our reasoning is as follows:
The Wenlock River is one of Australia's last few remaining, true wild rivers. It retains its unique and irreplaceable attributes untouched and undamaged by man. It is home to the largest diversity of freshwater fish species of any Australian river. It is home to the largest breeding population of salt water crocodiles on the planet. It is also home to other endangered species such as the Red Goshawk. The Wenlock must be declared 'wild' under the Wild Rivers Act 2005 to ensure it is protected and doesn't become another victim of man's waterway greed, like the Murray Darling River system.

The bauxite plateaus present in the Wenlock River area, and particularly in the Coolibah Springs complex are vital to the overall hydrology and resultant ecology of the area. If the bauxite is removed, the entire system will fail, it is that simple. It can never be replaced, regardless of the amount of 're-vegetation' promised by Cape Alumina Pty Ltd.

13. Save Chasewater fish

The private contractors were willing to carry out the works for a considerable charge, but would sell the fish as part of the process. British Waterways on the other hand are happy to rehome the fish in local waterways, but once rehomed, the fish will be owned by British Waterways and will not be returned to Chasewater.

Once the water levels and the ecology of the reservoir are back to acceptable levels, we could theoretically consider restocking the pools with new fish, but as we only make less than £500 from angling licenses a year, we won’t have available monies to do this. The lake’s SSSI status would also restrict how we could restock the reservoir, and no alien species or trout would be allowed back.

Stowe Pool – it’s an SSSI and Chasewater is considered to have a moderate risk of crayfish plague, so we aren’t allowed to put the fish into Stowe.

The Swag (or Jeffrey’s Pool and Jeffrey’s Swag) - it already holds a healthy population of fish, and when we are doing the works to the causeway we will have to lower the level of the water in this pool. If we put fish into the Swag now we would have to catch them again when we begin the works.

Slurry Pool - LDC doesn’t own it and its water quality is not certain. It does not have a water link with Chasewater so the fish won’t transfer from one to the other.

Anglesey Branch Canal – Many fish will have been washed through the valves to get into the canal so this area will already be heavily populated with fish. But when we close the valves to allow the reservoir to refill there will be no water feeding this part of the canal, and so its water levels are likely to fall.

14. Think Outside the Bowl

Too long have fish been subjected to the dirty, cramped, oppressive and deadly conditions of a fish bowl. Most people don't even know that the average fish just can't survive in such quarters. In fact, purchasing a fishbowl is tantamount to signing the death warrant of an innocent aquatic animal.

Fishbowls provide inadequate space, oxygen and water conditions for our beloved underwater friends. But all of these true facts continue to go unrecognized in countries like the U.S., and fish are continually abused and killed.

Please, sign this petition and give your support against the maltreatment of fish through fishbowls.

15. ANIMALS FEEL PAIN

The dog in the picture was snatched from the streets by sick thugs.

It’s muzzle was bound so tightly with twine it could barely breathe let alone whimper.

Then callously forced into a sack she was tossed onto a pile of other terrified dogs ready to be butchered for meat.

She was one of the lucky ones because a team of police and volunteers intercepted the shipment and seized her and the other poor dogs.

We urgently need your help in our campaign to free dogs like her from the clutches of this heartless and illegal trade committed by criminals in Thurrock.

We demand severe punishment for anybody who abuses animals in any way.

It makes us sick to the stomach with the problem we have with animal torturers. These people are complete and utter cowards. They pick on defenceless animals because they know they can't fight back, it's disgusting and we feel ashamed to live in a society where animals can be treated this way.

16. Stop Overfishing

Ecological extinction caused by overfishing precedes all other pervasive human disturbance to coastal ecosystems, including pollution, degradation of water quality, and climate change.

Overfishing of marine animals such as cod, oysters, and other species is also the primary cause leading to many problems that have appeared recently in coastal waters around the world. In locations all over the world, increases in disease, invasions of non-native species and declining water quality can be traced back to a loss of certain marine species.

In addition to overharvesting, disturbance of underwater habitats is a primary cause leading to the collapse of fish populations.

17. Remove fish from Wal-Mart or stop fish abuse

January 6, 2006

Every week that I go to Walmart and to the pet department almost all the fish that are not removed from the aquarium are sick and may have bladder disease, ect.

Most of Walmart's problem is overcrowding of fish and failure to provide proper treatment to sick fish. I belive this is animal cruelty, to not ensure the fishes' health and to let people buy these fish.

Another concern is that there is never anyone experienced in the pet department and usually another department handles the fish. It breaks my heart to see these fish suffer and die.
