Kuwaiti woman jailed for 'insulting' emir tweets
BBC 10 June 2013
A Kuwaiti court has sentenced a woman to 11 years in jail for insulting the emir and calling for regime change on social networking site Twitter.
Huda al-Ajmi, a 37-year-old teacher, has been also convicted of misusing her mobile phone.
She can appeal against the sentence.
Kuwait has punished several Twitter users in recent months for insulting its ruler, Sheikh Sabah al-Sabah, who is described as "immune and inviolable" in the constitution.
In May, an appeals court overturned a five-year sentence for prominent opposition figure Mussallam al-Barrak who was convicted of "undermining" the ruling emir, says his defence lawyer.
The former MP was arrested over remarks he made at a rally in October, urging the emir to avoid "autocratic" rule in Kuwait. Mr Barrak was handed the sentence in April, but later freed on bail.
His trial prompted angry protests and clashes between activists and police.
There has been a recent clampdown in Kuwait, with activists and MPs being charged with insulting the emir through comments posted on social networking sites such as Twitter.
While Kuwait has not seen the same scale of pro-democracy uprisings as in other Arab states, there has been growing tension between former MPs and the government, which is dominated by the Sabah family.

Family court judge names William Vernon as the killer of a 19 month old baby — five years after he was cleared by a jury, but due to our fantastic laws in this country Vernon CANNOT be re-tried for the murder of baby Alanis. New laws now allow a second prosecution if new evidence is revealed — but they came in after his trial - furthermore, there is no "new evidence" in this case
MONSTER William Vernon has been dramatically named as the killer of a baby — 5 years after a jury acquitted him.
Vernon, 24, originally from Cardigan Street, Chaddesden had walked free after he was cleared of stamping 19-month-old Alanis Holland to death.
But a family court judge chose to rule openly “in the interests of justice” that he DID cause her death, and branded him a danger to children.
Worried social services staff brought the case to protect the two children of his new lover.
Judge James Orrell heard Vernon had savagely beaten one of the youngsters, a six-year-old known only as Child A, ten times with a metal spatula.
Judge Orrell said: “This incident was vicious and not simple chastisement.” He said it was hard to imagine any child could be safe with Vernon. The judgment finally vindicated Alanis’s innocent mum Joanne, who Vernon had cruelly accused in court of being the killer.
She said: “I’ve been all the way to hell and back. Now, at last, everyone finally knows the whole truth. When I went to see Alanis at the mortuary I made a promise to her that I’d get justice for her.
“I’ll never forget the foreman delivering the not guilty verdict at Vernon’s murder trial. I just collapsed in tears. “In other people’s eyes the jury incriminated me. I was called a murderer in the street.
“In an ideal world he’d be behind bars. At the very least he should be tagged.” Joanne had left toddler Alanis in jobless Vernon’s care at the home they shared in Overseal, Derbyshire, in February 2000.
When she returned Joanne found her child struggling for breath. The jury at Leicester Crown Court heard a recording of her sobbing and pleading for help during a 999 call.
Alanis was lying limp in her arms, her life ebbing away, as distraught Joanne pleaded: “Please come back to me.” The tot had a ruptured liver — more usually seen after a child has been run over by a car.
The prosecution claimed that Vernon was the only person who could have inflicted the “dreadful” damage. But the jury cleared him of murder AND a lesser charge of manslaughter after he went into the witness box to accuse Joanne.
She was never charged and yesterday Judge Orrell said it was “inherently unlikely” that she would have harmed her daughter.
He said: “Vernon said Joanne inflicted the injuries and punched Alanis. This suggestion is insidious and fanciful. “Joanne is a mother who has no problems controlling her temper. Vernon is a man with a violent temper. What he did to Child A shows the extent he will go to to punish children.”
The judge then declared in Derby Family Court: “William Vernon struck Alanis with such force that he ruptured her liver and caused her death. Vernon presents a serious and continuous risk to young children.”
Details of any order made by a judge in the Family Division are not made public.
Vernon CANNOT be re-tried for the murder of Alanis. New laws now allow a second prosecution if new evidence is revealed — but they came in after his trial

4. ESPN, BRING BACK THE BASEBALL TODAY PODCAST!
Recently, ESPN radio decided to drop the Baseball Today Podcast featuring Eric Carabell, Mark Simon and Keith Law. It was amusing, interesting, unlikely, SABR-slanted and more than anything, very funny. The self-proclaimed dilettantes hosting the show were intelligent and their chemistry excellent.
Although replaced by another baseball podcast, featuring the terrific Buster Olney of ESPN television lore, the Baseball Today Podcast is sorely missed.
Listeners so absorbed in baseball knowledge already know virtually all presented by the new one (after all, who but the most ardent fan listens to a baseball podcast in the first place?) and looked forward to Karabell's unabashed love for all things Philly (especially Delmon Young), Law's snarkiness ("How about THAT, huh?" or, "Anytime someone accuses us of bias--a kitten dies") and Mark Simon's Ridiculous Question of the Day (who but the likes of us create songs of his beautiful voice and submit them for broadcast?).
ESPN, PLEASE BRING BACK THE BASEBALL TODAY PODCAST! There's room on the web for both!
5. Change the "E" or Make Me Sad
Erin Doran has her "E" on her twitter name backwards, and it is scarring the nation. SCARRING. We need to change the "E" so it is straight-forward.
6. Scarecrow dogs - Expose Bulgaria's dirty little secret
It's been going on for centuries in the mountain range villages of Bulgaria. Clear evidence of the unsurpassed, undying evil genius of the Bulgarian Homo Rapiens.
Instead of placing scarecrows, poor, defenseless dogs are regularly tied up by the villagers with a short, rusty chain to a post in the wilderness, near someone's ranch, to scare away predators. The chain leaves for little or no movement on the muddy ground.
Soiled in their urine and feces, frustrated, left without food or water for days in the scorching 40 C heat, exposed to predators, unable to fight or run, uncared for, unwanted, untreated and forgotten, they die in agony and terror from thirst, starvation, disease, or their wounds if attacked and mutilated by the raving beasts.
This kind of abuse is common and widespread. Despite the numerous tragic reports of dogs who have suffered and died in such despicable conditions, nothing has been done by the regulatory authorities or the police to amend the situation or punish those responsible.
This kind of animal neglect should never happen. But when it does, it must be exposed and stopped.
7. PROTECT THE VICTIMS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN SRI LANKA
At the request made by the mother of a child sexual victim, the Judge at the High Court in Sri Lanka (Case No 39/2004), made a recommendation to the Attorney General to withdraw the indictment.
After considering all the facts involved and in view of the sheer severity of the damage that could cause to the victim in this particular case, the AG agreed to withdraw the charges. Unfortunately the news papers published the details of the case including false information violating the child's right to privacy and confidentiality, totally destroying the intentions of the courts and causing immense damage to the victim and her family.
This secondary victimization has severely damaged the victim without giving her the opportunity to rebuild her life.

9. Immediate freedom for Hamza Kashgari
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia deported a Saudi Arabian blogger on Sunday, police said, despite fears voiced by human rights groups that he could face execution in his home country over Twitter comments he made that were deemed insulting to the Prophet Mohammad.
Hamza Kashgari, a 23-year-old columnist, sparked outrage in the oil-rich kingdom with comments posted on the Prophet's birthday a week ago that led some Islamic clerics to call for him to face the death penalty.
Kashgari fled the country, but was arrested by police in majority-Muslim Malaysia on Thursday as he transited through Kuala Lumpur international airport.
"The Saudi writer was repatriated to his home country this Sunday morning," a police spokesman told Reuters. "This is an internal Saudi matter that we cannot comment on."
Malaysia has a close affinity with many Middle Eastern nations through their shared religion. The Southeast Asian nation is also a U.S. ally and a leading global voice for moderate Islam, meaning that the decision to extradite Kashgari is certain to be controversial.
"Saudi clerics have already made up their mind that Kashgari is an apostate who must face punishment," Christoph Wilcke, senior Middle East researcher at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement on Friday.
"The Malaysian government should not be complicit in sealing Kashgari's fate by sending him back."
Kashgari's lawyer in Malaysia, Mohammad Noor, told Reuters by telephone that he had obtained a court order to prevent the deportation, but had not been allowed to see his client.
"If the government of Malaysia deports him to Saudi Arabia, disrespecting the court order, this is clearly contempt of court, unlawful and unacceptable," he said.
The Star newspaper quoted Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein as saying that Kashgari had been repatriated and that the charges against him would be decided by Saudi authorities.
"Malaysia has a longstanding arrangement by which individuals wanted by one country are extradited when detained by the other," he was quoted as saying.
Blasphemy is a crime punishable by execution under Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law. It is not a capital crime in Malaysia.
Reuters could not verify Kashgari's comments because he later deleted them, but media reported that one of them reflected his contradictory views of the Prophet - that he both loved and hated him.
Kashgari later said in an interview that he was being made a "scapegoat for a larger conflict" over his comments.
10. Remove enforced link shortening from Twitter
Recently, Twitter changed it's policy on URL's within Tweets. It is no longer possible to Tweet a full URL. All are shortened automatically to a "t.co" URL, using Twitter's URL wrapper.
No one would object to something so enterprising, if it was optional. It would even be admissible if third party clients had the ability to post full URL's. Can they? Of course not! Twitter have taken an action which is in danger of making their services useless to businesses and organisations.
Many businesses and organisations spend considerable time and money on a web address which reflects their brand identity. In one fell swoop, Twitter have eliminated this option from Tweets! I have read reports from specialist developers, who have invested heavily in their own link-shortening technology, specifically for use with Twitter, and now cannot use it!
I therefore propose this petition, to push Twitter to allow an option to turn off link shortening.
11. Fairness in Loan Contracts
The Banks are foreclosing on Homeowners using Trust Deeds that are suspicious or voidable without due process, The Reverse Mortgage bankers are robbing the heirs of their inheritance.
Bankers or using robo signers in deceptive practices marked at subprime loans that originated to fail without a remedy of recovery and the people was forced to bailed out the banks now why didn't they bail out the people. This must change!

13. Abolish law "felony non support"
The Government has enacted that it is a "felony" to "owe" child support in almost every state. In most states, If you were ordered to "pay an amount" in the "time stated", and failed to do so, and the amount has compiled to $5,000.00 or more in arrearages, that you are guilty of committing the crime of "felony non-support" punishable by up to 4yrs in prison.
There is NO DEFENSE of record to this charge, that even if you are disabled and cannot pay, you are guilty of the crime. This law needs to be abolished as it is frivolous to the rights of the people. The law by design was created to "extort" money from families, and to fund its institution!
14. Stop Subsidizing Gaddafi: Boycott .LY
Did you know that LY (.ly) is the internet domain belonging to the Libyan government? Every internet service that uses .ly is paying Muammar Gaddafi's government for the privilege - money that is being used to violently oppress the Libyan people.
Act.ly, bit.ly, HootSuite, The San Francisco Chronicle and others should stop using .ly domains and stop paying Gaddafi's government. At least one US-based internet service has been censored by Libya, and the .ly domain could be unusable in the event of international sanctions. The .ly domain is bad choice - and you can choose not to use it.

15. Australian Government - no more spin
I want everyone to take note of what our politicians say and then what they do. I refuse to be lied to any more. Spin has no place in 2011 in our country. I want our Government to govern for our benefit not just so they can stay in power.
No more NSW type lies, no more obfuscation. Treat us like adults.
16. Re-activate the original @Mint_Slice
I aim to create a successful petition to have my first Twitter account, @Mint_Slice reactivated.
It may sound shallow, but this account is practically a complete documentation of some life changing events and it would be nice to be able to read back through all of these just to see everything that really happened.
17. Petition to Receive University Degree without Delay from Memorial University of Newfoundland
Each year universities such as Memorial University of Newfoundland hold Spring and Fall Convocations. While convocation can be an enjoyable time for students and family to gather during this ceremony it poses an inconvenience for students completing their degrees at the end of the Fall semester (December).
Students who may have met all the academic requirements and paid all outstanding fees still have to wait until Spring Convocation (Approximately 5 months) to receive their parchment.
According to Memorial University Regulations, section 49 of the Memorial University Act:
"The Chancellor shall be the Chairperson of Convocation and all degrees shall be conferred by him or her."
Basically put, you have to wait until the university's Chancellor give you your parchment.
However, students seeking employment and wishing to go overseas often require an original degree as a requirement of their employer or the foreign government.
Some universities agree to give you a "Pre-convocation Diploma" which is basically a parchment much the same as a degree to take the place of your actual degree, pending convocation.
If any university is going to go through the trouble of creating a "Pre-convocation" diploma then why can't they simple give students their degrees in advance of convocation?
If students have met completed the academic requirements for their degree and paid all fees associated with their education they have aright to receive their degree without delay.
As a representative from Memorial University's Registrar's Office stated in a recent email (December 8, 2010 2:50 PM), paraphrasing:
"it is my view that the process of conferring degrees at Memorial is not a regulation but stems from a longstanding practice or custom in place at universities generally"
Not a regulation but a tradition, and one that needs to change!
18. Facebook Should Never Ask For Too Much From Facebook Users
Facebook should be a free site without mobile or credit cards and having to prove your identity with government ID. Gift apps now require credit card or mobile with a confirmation code and when asked to get a confirmation code they never do send one. Facebook asks for too much.
Facebook should be more respectful towards privacy and with out having to get millions of people to give out too much personal information. People world wide are being picked on by Facebook, losing their account for no reason or being booted for some silly childish reason?
Note: not everyone has a credit card or mobile phone and probably some have never been to College or University? Why make it harder for millions of innocent Facebook users? It is time for a change!
19. Verify @rioferdy5 Twitter!
For some reason one cannot comprehend, Twitter still refuses to verify the Twitter account of Manchester United and England Captain Rio Ferdinand. As one of the most active sports stars on there, and the fact he is so active in talking to us normal folks, we find it an outrage that his account is yet to be verified by the powers that be Twitter.
Several attempts have been made to bring up this issue, with numerous trending efforts, but Twitter still refuses to accept the authenticity of the aforementioned account.
20. We Stand With Arizona, and Against Illegal Immigration
Arizona is besieged by illegal immigration--more people and drugs cross illegally into the United States through Arizona than any other state. And Arizonans suffer the massive levels of crime that go with it. Drug and human smuggling, extortion, kidnapping and murders. And the Federal government has done NOTHING to stop it.
Arizonans have had enough. They decided to stop waiting for the Feds to do what the Constitution mandates--to protect its citizens from external threats. So they passed legislation to help stop the robberies, shootings, rapes, kidnapping, murders, and madness.
This isn't about racism, or xenophobia, or "apartheid" or any of the other hysterical slanders the left has come up. This is about the safety and well-being of the citizens of the state. And its support was overwhelming: 70% of Arizonans supported it. And support is Bi-Partisan, with 84% of Republicans and 51% of Democrats in favor.
But some have now come out and called for a boycott of Arizona. Incredibly, even one of its own U.S. Representatives--Rep. Raul Grijalva has joined this call for a boycott--of his own state!
21. Bring Back Death Penalty In South Africa!
For the past fifteen years there has been a RAPID increase in murder, rape and all other incredibly savage acts and crime in general. South Africa is currently NUMBER ONE on in the world for murder, rape and all crime and therefore earned the name "CRIME CAPITAL OF THE WORLD".
More then THREE THOUSAND FARMERS have been murdered since 1994 and nearly more then 50 South Africans are murdered PER DAY! A BIG portion of that are CHILDREN that were RAPED TO DEATH!
These SAVAGES are seldom caught and only a few gets captured and convicted. Most of these murderers actually prefer being in jail. They receive clean beds, three meals and free education if they so desire.
This becomes another burden on the taxpayer. With other words the law-abiding citizens of South Africa actually are then the ones getting punished for the murderer 's heinous acts! More then 600 South Africans have actually successfully gained refugee status in other countries! HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS South Africans have already fled the country in fear of their lives! This resulted in the ultimate "Brain Drain" of the country.
Instead of keeping the LAW-ABIDING, EDUCATED citizens of South Africa IN the country, the Lack of the South African Government's involvement and lack of proper punishment has secured South Africa 's first place as a MURDER/RAPE/CRIME - CAPITAL IN THE WORLD!
I am of the strong opinion that Capital Punishment for murder should be reintroduced to South Africa! Amnesty International states that the Death Penalty 'violates the right of the life as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.' The question - What about the lives and rights of the victims? Were they not entitled to the Right of Life and Prohibition of Torture?
The person that takes the life savagely of another should no longer benefit from the protections afforded under any legislation. The failure of the government to actually ensure the citizens of South Africa a safer country is no longer expectable.
A Jail term is no longer a deterrent. BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY IN SOUTH AFRICA! PLEASE VISIT our pages on FACEBOOK -

23. Governor Togiola, PLEASE sign the letter to FEMA for the C-17's!
On September 29, 2009, a tsunami hit the Samoan islands, which killed hundreds of people and destroyed homes and entire villages.
Relief efforts are underway throughout the United States. Such endeavors in the greater Los Angeles area are led by churches, Chiefs, community organizations, and human rights activists. All have been instrumental in collecting goods based on needs communicated directly from those devastated by the disaster.
On September 30, 2009, President Barack Obama declared the events in American Samoa as a major disaster, thus authorizing FEMA to move forward with its work.
FEMA has since responded to American Samoa via directives from the Governor Togiola Tulafono.
Yesterday, October 9, 2009, Congresswoman Laura Richardson (http://richardson.house.gov/)
met with Samoan-American church leaders, elders, Chiefs, and community organizations actively involved in relief efforts within the Southern California area. She disclosed how actively involved her office has been with Congressman Faleomavaega, the Secretary of State office, FEMA, and Governor Togiola.
After days of deliberation to address logistical needs of the local relief efforts to obtain FEMA's assistance with air transportation, the community was told that Governor Togiola refused to sign the letter to FEMA activating the use of C-17's to transport now 360+ pallets of donated goods ready to go to American Samoa and Samoa, which are now placed in parking lots.
Miley Cyrus has recently deleted her Twitter account. Not only is Miley telling her younger fans that it is okay to conform to anothers request, but she is letting herself down. We always believed her to be a strong, independant person, a great role model and someone to respect.
Now however she is showing that she may not be as independent as we thought.
25. Save Waratah Park Earth Sanctuary
Waratah Park Earth Sanctuary, Home of Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, is currently leased by Prudentia Investments and its future is uncertain.
We, the community, do not want this land to become just another housing estate. We cannot allow this to happen, this is a beautiful piece of land and an iconic part of Australian History. This is a matter of urgency! NSW Lands needs to take responsibility & claim back this land and return it to the community.
We call on the Government to acknowledge the dire state of affairs that currently confront Waratah Park. The Government must acknowledge the historical significance of the site and the recognition it commands throughout Australia and world wide. We also call on the Government to direct the Heritage Council to consider the inclusion of Waratah Park, particularly the iconic ranger cottage, on the State's Heritage Register.
We must ensure that the site is preserved under public ownership and remains open for the enjoyment and benefit of the people of New South Wales. This is a real challenge for the current Government, and we urge it to meet that challenge.
Over the last six months or so, more and more third party services are popping up that integrate with Twitter that force the user to tweet when they use them. This leaves users with a decision; use the service and tweet, or don’t use it at all.
What this means for the community is that it is sometimes bombarded with irritating posts about what piercing, Harry Potter character or M&M colour you are.
27. Expand the Functionality of the Nintendo DSi
For years, many handheld games and mobile devices have overwhelmed millions of people worldwide, specially Nintendo with its unique handhelds like their Nintendo DSi.
And such a successful handheld can be improved in different of ways. For example, giving more versatility to the system by adding common every-day applications that we see in many other appliances (such as Cell Phones, Computers other handheld games, etc.) like IM, Twitter, Myspace, and more to its Nintendo DSi Shop.
And since Nintendo is such a success, all of this can be fullfilled.

If you are a Tennant fan, you'll know very well that he is not on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter or any other social networking sites. In the past, he has shown no interest to join any of them either. But recently (it seems to me) that he's been tempted by the idea of Twitter...
