151. Bring Back StarTrek.com

Late 2007, CBS Interactive, who now own StarTrek.com follwing CBSs aquisition of Paramount, fired the staff of the website and have left it to mothball on the internet.

As the official portal of a series boasting 5 live action series, an animated series, 10 feature films and an upcoming movie helmed by JJ Abrams, we feel that this is an unnaceptable way to treat fans of this iconic franchise.

153. Bring Inuyasha Back

On October 26th, 2006 the anime InuYasha ended after 167 episodes. Although it has lasted a lot longer then most Japanese anime, inuYasha comes to an abrupt ending while the manga continues. There are so many unanswered questions.

If you are new to InuYasha or anime in general, I suggest you check it out (ex: Google: inuyasha). Inuyasha still continues to be one of the best manga and anime out there. My goal is to try and get the series back on the air with fresh new episodes. I need your help to make this happen.

154. Save Hilltop School

The “New School” at Stackpole Rd and High St has a projected cost of $20 Million – which is due to rise yearly. The cost to renovate Hilltop Elementary School has not been researched since 1999 (which was approximately $3.084 Million).

The cited reasons for a new school are overcrowding in Maplewood and the Middle School, and that Hilltop renovation isn’t worth taxpayers’ dollars. Former councilor Todd Marsh told Fosters that City Council was “making the decision [to buy the land for the New School] to have an option.”

Since that decision passed back in December 2007, it has remained the only option for the future of our children. An ad-hoc reuse committee was established for the sole purpose, as Mike Micucci puts it, of finding uses for Hilltop other than a school.

Consider this petition our demand for a second option – to find what it would cost to renovate/update Hilltop Elementary School.

155. Save the pit bulls!

This petition is specifically for Iowa. Some people are trying to get pit bulls banned because of the attacks that have been publicly exploited and we need to show them the truth about the kind hearted pit bulls that we all know and love.

Please help me show them the reality that only the owner is responsible and that the facts are in the pit bulls favor!!! Pit bulls are only 2 percent of the annual canine attacks and are one of the top tested breeds for temperament.

More labs and mixed breeds are responsible for attacks each year yet they are not the ones being banned! I personally think that if this horrible ban does pass that EVERY other breed that ranks higher on the annual attacks should be banned also but will it happen? I highly doubt it. Please make the right decision!

156. 9,709 Letters to Oprah Winfrey & still going strong!! Help the cause :)

I first started to write my YA (young adult) novel JUNE on June 7th, 2006. From that day on, I realized my true calling in life. I feel that I am destined to become a novelist and will do WHATEVER it takes to achieve this goal.

The next summer, when I had finished writing, I began sending out letters to literary agencies and publishing houses. After two years of receiving rejection letters, I have decided to take a new approach in accomplishing my dream.

It all started one day (that's how everything starts, huh?) when I was watching the Oprah Winfrey Show. I decided to check out her site out of mild curiosty. Little did I know, I was to be on that site every day from then on.

It began with a single letter. Then another. Then another. Then.... NINE THOUSAND. (yes, I actually sent 9,000!) It's now May 24th, 2008 and I have sent approximately 9,709 letters asking Oprah to help me publish my novel, JUNE.

Don't get me wrong, I know Oprah isn't a publishing house- but surely she has the connections to publish this!!!! I'll never stop sending these letters- I'm so determined to make this happen. I'll never take my eyes off this goal.

Feel free to also send letters to Oprah asking her to publish Maggie Mahar's novel, JUNE. Or, just sign this petition. Any help is greatly appreciated!

-I cannot possibly begin to express my gratitude for all of your signatures. I do feel the need to inform you, that after 6 months, I did recieve a phone call from Harpo Studios, however it did not turn out quite as expected. For their protection, I won't quite go into the details (also because I'm a nice person, and don't want you guys to start disliking Oprah or her productions.)
To those who have asked to read some of JUNE, I will gladly post part of the story here, however irrelevent it is to my cause. I would like to note, yes, when you first meet June she's a total snob. She's everything you could hate in a girl. However there is a moral to my story, and June will learn a great life lesson.
And incase anyone was wondering, I'm still working on my novel getting published. Just because one door slammed in my face doesn't mean I have to give up and forget it. JUNE will get published. I know it.
Thanks again,
Maggie

--------------------------------------------------------

June Huntzberger looked in her bedroom mirror, practicing her facial expressions; each one more exaggerated and more pathetic than the next. She needed to convince her mom that going to Colorado was the last thing that she needed to add to her long summer agenda. Mountains, fresh air, and hiking were all things June could in no way, relate to.
June was no ordinary girl. She had a unique face that went well with the rest of her body. She was tall and thin like most of her Californian friends, but had a smile that instantly lit up any room. Her teeth were perfectly proportioned to her face and the perfect shade of movie star white.
Unlike her other friends who were more tan than a cinnamon bagel, June had fair, unblemished skin that, for the most part, made up for any other imperfection she might have.
Her long, brown hair framed her face as she pushed her bangs to the side and continued to practice more facial expressions. She took a moment to glance at her big blue eyes and long black eyelashes; each strand perfectly in line with the next. Needless to say, she fit in flawlessly with the rest of her 90210 neighbors and close friends.
She thought for a moment to splash some cold water on her face, to make it seem like she had just been crying but quickly thought against that plan. She was a good actress no doubt, but it would take a whole lot more than acting to convince her mother that she had other plans for the summer.
Finally, when her face could no longer strain itself, she decided to go downstairs to her mother and give it a good old American go.
She nearly ran down the Huntzberger’s long, dramatic staircase into their equally spectacular kitchen. Mind you, this was no ordinary kitchen. It was the kind of kitchen that a chef could only dream of, fit with tons of high-end appliances and Tiffany silverware.
“Why do I have to go mom?” June said outright in a voice that virtually no mother could resist. She fiddled with her “J” shaped zipper on her green Juicy Couture hoodie as she waited patiently for a response. Desperate times called for desperate measures, and June was definitely having one of those times.
“Sorry honey, but honestly, when was the last time you saw your grandparents?” Larissa, June’s mother, responded. She continued to paint her nails a deep shade of maroon as she sat at the kitchen table.
June paused to reflect on that. It was well over a few years ago and all she remembered was Betty’s floral print grandma dress, and Bill’s way out of style mules. Or, was that them in the first place?
June let her mind explore. This time she thought about how her summer (which was supposed to be filled with shopping, secrets, boys, and more shopping) would now be a thing of the past.
Instead it would be replaced with sitting around watching corny soap operas and eating chunky oatmeal for breakfast. Isn’t that what grandparents do?
June gave up the fight with her mom and searched around their airy family closet, where all their suitcases, shoes, and coats were stored.
She picked and poked around until she finally found her favorite suitcase. It had been a “going away” gift from her friends when she had been jet setting around the world with her parents last summer.
But, this was no ordinary suitcase. It was large and customized to June’s every liking. Really, it only stored on average, a day’s worth of clothing for June. However, it meant the world to her because her friends all chipped in and bought it. She admired the pale pink leather exterior and the luxurious suede inside that always managed to keep her clothes looking and feeling fresh. She zipped it up and wheeled it into the kitchen where Larissa sat, painting her nails with careful precision.
“Is this alright?”
“Definitely not. You’re going to need more luggage than that! We have tons in the closet over there.” She pointed her long, slender fingers to the French doors that had really marked the entrance to a room at one point. But, the Huntzberger’s had long since converted it into a full closet to fit all of their priceless items. “At least, pick out four. You know how you are when you travel. Always packing more than you need” Larissa let out a small laugh.
“But why? I can’t possibly be staying there for that long.”
“Honey, you know the drill. You’re staying in Colorado for the whole summer. And you’re going to have fun! Grandma Betty and Grandpa Bill Huntzberger said they have a bunch of activities planned for you! Plus, you could do with some fresh air.”
Oh Great! June thought. Spending the whole summer without my friends is the worst thing I can think of. Apparently June’s mother had read her mind through her attitude.
“If the worst thing that can happen to you is being separated from your friends for a few months, then you better drop down on your knees and thank God for your wonderful life.” Larissa put the nail polish brush back into its O.P.I bottle and looked at June empathetically. “Think about that for a moment. Okay, sweetheart?”

June knew she couldn’t answer that question with out crying so she raced upstairs with all of her luggage and ran into her room where a tear trickled down her chin.

157. Stop abusing animals for entertainment!!!

I went to the circus for the first time not too long ago, and what I saw there was just plain cruelty. The poor animals were being shoved, beat, and had muzzles on them.

I was watching the bears, and they didn't seem happy. And they were kicking a tiger they called fat, and they probably purposely did that. I have no proof of that, but I have heard of cases on people doing it. A lot of the animals did not act happy.

159. Save the Arts, Save the Youth of California

Many elementary schools are depriving their students of fine art classes, such as band, choir, drama, etc. Elementary schools are given a fund of roughly about $100,000 yearly for the curriculum.

Theres a certain percentage amount of money for "critical" subjects, and the remaining is spent on anything extra for the school, like music, and the budgets are going to be cut in a year, or earlier (the current year is 2008), and the schools figure because of this, the first thing the schools think they can go without are the fine arts, especially those corresponding with music (band & choir).

As a result, more high school drop-outs. Which brings me to my conclusion, as to the reason for the petition, the California Government needs to provide a percentage of their funds to the school needs to go to the fine arts permanently.

160. Save Wilton Pool

Wilton Primary School in Hawick has had a special hydrotherapy swimming pool for the use of both additional needs and mainstream children from Wilton School, other schools within the town and children from across the Scottish Borders for the past 36 years.

The pool was recently upgraded but was closed in October for administrative reasons relating to Health and Safety. The pool has now been proposed for permanent closure by Scottish Borders Council. There is currently a consultation being carried out by Scottish Borders Council, and we need your support to keep the pool open.

For some children this is the only swimming pool they can access and their health is impacted by its closure. This is a unique facility that needs to be safeguarded for some of the most vulnerable children in our community.

161. Save the GF Central Censations dance team!

The Grand Forks Central dance team has changed the lives of its members, for years. Members have made life long friends, inspired each other, been there for each other, and continue to support the team long after graduation.

The confidence it gives its members is indescribable. The great experience dancers have traveling, competing, and bonding is one that nobody can understand unless they have experienced it themselves.

No other sport is anything like dance. For those of you who say cheer is just like dance-- you don't know how wrong you are. While cheer is a great sport for some girls, it's not the right one for others.

For spectators, it's a chance to see a group do what they absolutely love and come together as one after months of practice.

All-in-all, Censations dancers look back on their high school experience and the first memory that will always pop into their head will surely be one from the dance team.

If the GF Central Censations are no longer a dance team-- girls will be missing out on an amazing opportunity... one that could change their lives.

163. Keep Ceramists in Scotland

The Head of Design at Glasgow School of Art, has recommended that no new undergraduates will be accepted for both the full and part-time Ceramic degree courses, which will therefore result in the end of undergraduate ceramic education in Scotland.

This decision, taken in haste without any staff or student consultation will have major implications for Scottish design, culture and tourism.

As ceramic students of GSA, we feel passionately that there is a promising future for ceramics in Scotland and are disappointed that GSA lacks the vision and courage to support a profitable and innovative element of the design school.

164. Stop the Genocide in Darfur

The crisis in Darfur presents the largest humanitarian disaster since the Rwanda genocide in 1994. Over 800,000 men, women, and children have been killed, and that number is only getting bigger.

Every day the people of Darfur are systematically killed and raped for no apparent reason. The people of Darfur cannot turn to their own government as their government supports the groups committing these atrocities.

Not only does the government support these groups, but they are supplying them with weapons and ammunition. The people of Darfur must turn to other aid, but as the west turns their back on these people, they are left alone to die.

More than 1.8 million people affected by the continuing crisis in Darfur, Sudan. The situation in the strife-torn region remains extremely volatile.

More than 200,000 Sudanese have fled to neighbouring Chad and 1.6 million people, who have been displaced internally, are living in desperate conditions inside Darfur where there has been a complete breakdown in security.

173. Save Dolphins In Japan

The killing is cruel, inhumane and unnecessary. Japan claims to kill them for research, but they don't. They kill them and try to pass it off in stores as whales meat and get consumers money. They say it is part of their culture, but I'm sure we all know that's not true.

I don't understand how people can be so cruel to animals that are sweet, loving and kind to any person. They are happy and friendly, and they will interact with you and they will play with you.

178. Petition to Save Khatib Bongsu

Sungei Khatib Bongsu, located in Yishun, is one of the last natural areas in Singapore that have yet to be touched by development. It is a densely forested area leading gradually into a mangrove rich area, contributing to its rich array of biodiversity. It is also a place to experience how the kampong lifestyle was in olden days.

Earlier this year, however, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) decided to completely restrict access of Sungei Khatib Bongsu to the public in order to utilize the area for its own purposes. The last two residents of Sungei Khatib Bongsu who have lived on this land and made a living by fish and prawn farming were also forcefully evicted into modern living, they now reluctantly have to adapt to.

Khatib Bongsu is one of the last few local sites left that retain the essence of a kampong lifestyle that used to exist in Singapore. Should its natural environment be further destroyed or denied access to the public, particularly students like us, we stand to lose forever a huge range of biodiversity and a place where we will be able to get a taste of olden Singapore.

179. Save and preserve the historic WW2 U-534 U-boat!

The U-534 was the last U-boat to leave War torn Germany in WW2 and was sunk in The Kattegat. She was salvaged in 1993.

In 1996 she was moved to the Historic Warships Museum in Birkenhead. Visitors experienced conditions and atmosphere onboard. Since the museum's closure, her fate has been in question. Now positive plans to move her come at a cost. She will be carved into sections!

There are only two of these historic boats left in the world. She is a magnificent boat, her mere size leaves you in awe. Since 1942 she has fought for her survival and it now lies in our hands!

During WW2, U-boats had a strangle hold around Britain. She represents an important part of our history. This boat is the only one of her kind in the whole of Europe. We need to fight for her conservation, so future generations can appreciate her historical value.

She should be preserved as a whole, in remembrance of all the men of every nation that served and died at sea, during the Battle of the Atlantic.

180. Save our Dogs

Our bull breeds have been getting alot of bad press for years which has lead to some being banned and the possibilty of more joining them this year, including staffordshire bull terriers.

There were 6000 dog attacks in the UK in 2006 and only half a dozen or so made the papers and started to create panic because they were rottweilers and staffys. What happened to the other 5994?? german shepherds are responsible for over 40% of attacks each year and the breed standard clearly states they have an aggressive nature which is why the police use them but the papers never say anything about these.

Any vet or people who deal with dogs regular will tell you the same thing so why don't they want to ban the most dangerous dogs in the country??? over 12500 shepherds were registered in 2006 with the kennel club compared to between 1800 and 4000 of each bull breed, clearly the biggest threat is NOT bull breeds.

PLEASE HELP STOP THE DISCRIMINATION OF OUR BEAUTIFUL DOGS AND HELP STOP THE GOVERNMENT DESTROYING PEOPLES PETS FOR NO REASON.
