4. Build Australia's Broadband Future

Australia is in dire need of a New Broadband infrastructure as the current network is not adequate for home and business use. By not implementing the NBN you are holding back Australian businesses from achieving there best in a worldwide marketplace.

The Labor Government has said The NBN will be Australia’s first national wholesale-only open access, high speed broadband platform. They will use Fibre Optic Cables which will replace the Old existing Copper Telstra Network. Labor has pledged to set up online consultations with GPs, allowing regional patients to see a doctor without leaving their home, while NBN Co chief Mike Quigley revealed last week that the NBN would be capable of internet speeds of up to 1Gbps, 100 times faster than originally believed.

The Coalition has proposed investing in a combination of technologies, including fibre optic, cable and wireless, to bring a minimum speed of 12Mbps to 97% of Australians. $1 billion public grant funding and additional, undisclosed private funding for building a wireless network for rural and regional areas
$1 billion on building a metropolitan wireless network focussed on outer metropolitan areas. Rural and Regional Areas would miss out on Fiber Optic and only be provided with Wireless or Satellite Access.

6. A Free Market for Satellite Pay-TV Services

Since satellite TV has been around, viewers have been restricted to subscribe to an alternative satellite TV provider from another country. This is due to private contractual agreements between right holders and broadcasters to only allow rights of programmes within each country and restrict viewing to viewers (even when they are prepared to pay fees) from outside the country.

The restriction however prevents an internal market without frontiers and competition throughout the EU. Customers have to rely on the grey market to obtain subscription cards and decoders from different countries and they are at risk of their viewing card being turned off if the broadcaster finds out it is used outside their country.

There is also a court case about to be heard next summer in the European Court of Justice involving pub landlords who show Premier League games via foreign satellite channels in the UK. They are being prosecuted on behalf of Sky and the Premier League due to the exclusivity of rights in each country.

However, the term exclusivity undermines competition rules in which the broadcasters should not enforce the service to consumers living within the country and they should not restrict the services to consumers living outside the country.

This petition is to fight for the freedom of the satellite skies and to open competition for consumers to have a fair choice of satellite services. Also the petition will be ideal to present to the court to show there is a high demand for a free market of satellite pay-TV services.

7. Abolish The Satellite Home Viewer Extenstion and Reauthorization Act

On December 1, 2006, a federal court judge ordered a permanent injunction against EchoStar (owners of Dish Network) from delievering distant network signals of ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC from New York and Los Angeles. This made customers who lived in rural areas or don't get locals on satellite upset. DirecTV wasn't affected.

We think that the Satellite Home Viewer Extenstion and Reauthorization Act (SHVERA) is unfair and unconstitional. We have dual feeds of Nickelodeon and Disney Channel, but why not ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX. In Canada, satellite providers like BellExpressVU and StarChoice offered distant network feeds from the American Networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox) from either Boston and Seattle, and Canadian TV stations from all over Canada which is included, but why not here in the United States.

We think the federal law that you can't get a another market's locals (i.e. If you lived in Chicago, and wanted to see the Los Angeles stations, but it's against federal law) is totally unfair and unconstitional. It's time the Federal Judge needs to reconsider his permanent injuntion decision and reinstate the distant local feeds (From New York City and Los Angeles) to Dish Network.

Also, write to your congressman, senators, the Federal Communications Commssion, the National Assoication of Broadcasters, or even the President of the United States that the SHVERA law is unfair. It's time that the federal law should be changed for the better.

8. Help get Victory Waters SPEAKS! on Syndication & Satellite

Victory Waters is an amazingly talented radio personality based out of Atlanta, GA. She started her own show with the understanding that a voice from her sex, generation and ethnic background needed to be heard.

After working in various television and radio organizations, Victory bought her own professional equipment and started broadcasting via the internet.

Interviewing celebrities, speaking with the average person, and getting informed with industry experts (physicians, attorneys, entrepreneurs, religious leaders, politicians) is what makes Victory Waters' show so unique. Never scripted it is raw but funny - informative yet entertaining.

HER NEXT MOVE? The big leagues!

9. Revive Australia's space program

In 1967, Australia launched their first satellite, WRESAT. While they may not have used an Australian built rocket (the USA donated a Redstone rocket), the effort was coordinated NOT by the Australian Government, but by CSIRO and the Universities.

Australia, along with the Soviet Union, USA and France, led the way, as it was the fourth country on our planet to insert a satellite into orbit.

Since then our space related activities have been virtually non-existent, largely due to the attitude of Robert Menzies, who oversaw the disassembly of the Woomera space launch facilities.

The only launch vehicle Australia has is built by ASRI, a non-profit organisation, and is capable of sending only up to 100kg into orbit. Compare this to the USA and Russia, who are sending people to into orbit and to the Moon. Even countries such as Iran and South Korea have launch facilities and plans to send up their own satellites.

Australia has no such plans. Australia has no space program. In this era, spaceflight will play a large role, and Australia will not be a part of it, as other countries go on to explore and colonise the Moon and Mars, unless we act now and rebuild our space program.

----------

Please spread awareness and help inspire a generation of scientists and engineers in Australia. It is time for Australia to take the lead - humans to Mars in 10 years!

10. GPS for Sexual Offenders

July 17, 2006

We the undersigned propose that after a Sexual Offender has finished his or her punishment, the offender should have to wear the Global Positioning Satellite - hereinafter referred to as GPS - for the purpose of knowledge of the offender's whereabouts at all times.

To pay for such an incumberence to taxpayers, we the undersigned propose that the Offender work in an assigned job such as those that many Americans find "undesirable." Maybe even those that illegal immigrants are doing.

This may even help the immigration issue.

11. Watch TNA In The UK

Dear (UK) TNA Wrestling Fans,

As you will all know, one of the leading wrestling companys/industrys named TNA, have recently begun booking a new show in the name of TNA Impact. This show is a new kind of entertainment that only TNA can bring unlike other federations like the WWE and other pro and semi-pro federations.

This petition is to try and get a response from UK TNA fans that would enjoy having TNA Impact aired on regional television rather than satellite or sky, which is not available for some people.
Channels like C4 and C5 would benefit from the weekly TNA Impact shows, greatly in my opinion and hopefully many of the people that will sign this petition will think the same.

I am sure that if we presented these two networks with the information and signatures that we will gather, they would happily review the idea of airing TNA Impact shows.

I hope that you, the fans will take a few minutes of your time to add your signature to the list of names, as it will help us!

13. Allow EchoStar DirectTV Merger

I am writing to you today as a current satellite TV subscriber who would like to add my voice of support to the pending merger of EchoStar and DIRECTV. The combination of these two satellite providers will provide numerous benefits to consumers like me, including more choices in channels, programming, broadband and new television technologies.

By merging, the combined company will be a much stronger competitor to cable television and can offer more programming choices and, most importantly, all local TV channels in every market in the U.S. By providing local TV channels everywhere, this merger will make satellite television a strong alternative to cable in our community. Throughout the country, people will now be able to turn to satellite TV to access their local news, weather and community information, in addition to a comprehensive package of national video programming. But just as exciting, the merger will bring the availability of affordable high-speed Internet service by satellite to over 40 million Americans who don't have high-speed Internet access. These tremendous benefits to consumers won't happen without the merger. Satellite-delivered Internet service will bring an affordable and competitive alternative to cable modems and DSL to consumers in big cities, small towns and rural areas alike. This will give me a competitive choice for Internet access and will be especially advantageous to rural communities where cable modems and DSL are not likely to be available anytime in the near future.

In the interest of improving our access to competitive television and Internet service, I urge you to lend your support to this merger.

15. Stop the Echo Star and Direct TV Merger

Dear Mr. Ashcroft:

As an American citizen, I cherish the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion guaranteed by the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America.

Mr. Ashcroft, my constitutional rights are being threatened by the proposed merger of Echo Star and Direct TV which is now pending before the Justice Department.

As an American and a Christian I respectfully request that the merger between Echo Star and Direct TV be stopped for the following reasons:

1. Echo Star has fought hard in court against the laws that insure religious broadcaster's access to satellite television. If Echo Star wins this fight, religious broadcasters will not be able to reach satellite viewers.
2. In addition, Echo Star announced its intention to drop the ABC Family channel, claiming it doesn't have room on its satellites. This is difficult to believe coming from a company that has a half dozen pornographic channels on its TV service.
3. In rural area, and other parts of the country not reached by cable, TV viewers would no longer have a choice between two providers of satellite TV, as they do today. A monopoly would dramatically affect the availability of religious programming in every rural area in America.
4. Echo Star has fought against the "must carry' law in court. The "must carry" law states that any Christian television station in any city "must be carried" on satellite and cable television. If you watch Christian television over satellite or cable TV right now, Echo Star wants that privilege revoked.

Mr. Ashcroft, I ask you again…stop this merger. It's not good for America. It's not good for people of faith.
