Over 60,000 deaths have occurred in Syria since the first and peaceful protests against President Assad began. In addition, Turkey and other neighboring countries, are overfilling with fleeing refugee's who do not want to die in Syria.
Hundreds of thousands of Syrian's have fled the bloodbath in Syria. Children lay dead on the Syrian's streets, women are being raped, and men are being tortured by the Assad regime.
On 07/07/2011, York based student Francis Fernie was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.
Francis was involved in the anti-cuts protests that took place on March 26th in London.
When police attacked the crowd outside Fortnum and Mason, Francis was hit repeatedly (including over the head) by police batons.
In a moment of 'hot headedness', Francis threw two placard sticks towards a crowd of heavily armoured police officers.
It has not been proven that he hurt anybody.
Frank is a hard working student, with no previous offences, a solid background in voluntary and community work and to everyone that knows him, he is a brother.
Frank should not be in prison.
It is easy to see that Frank's sentence is disproportionate to the crimes that he has commited and his background is one of lifelong kindness.

We have all heard of the Westboro Baptist Church sometime or another. They picket at soldier’s funerals, little children's funerals and anyone they think is an "act of God" or a punishment for sins PA or the US has caused.
I want to make sure that they cannot legally petition in CT ever again! This is not fair to the families in mourning, or respectful to the dead. It is a form of harassment and it needs to end now.

Article 20 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of which the nation of Iran is a sponsor and co-signatory, and Article 27 of the Iranian Constitution, to which the government of Iran is bound by law, each provide for peaceful freedom of assembly by unarmed protesters as a basic human right to freely speak and express themselves in an open and unrestricted public forum.
If the Government’s plans for higher education go ahead it will be a disaster for students and the future of university education;
• students will be leaving university saddled with debts of up to £80,000;
• higher education will become a two tier system with only the rich going to the best universities;
• access to university will be based on bank balances not your academic ability;
• poorer students will be put off going to university if they have to pay £9,000 a year.

January 20th: The Supreme Court has overturned Farah Vazehan’s death sentence. HOWEVER, even though her death sentence has been overturned, since she is suffering from illness, prison is comparable to slow death sentence for her. In September, she was transferred to an outside hospital due to her heart problems.
PLEASE CONTINUE TO SIGN THIS PETITION!
*UPDATE: Sept 10, 2010*
Death row prison Farah Vazehan has been transferred to a hospital outside of prison after suffering a heart attack!
On August 4th, reports surfaced that Farah Vazehan was sentenced to 15 years in prison. However, a reliable source has told RAHANA that her sentence is actually death.
The anonymous source told RAHANA that Vazehan’s family has not informed her that she is sentenced to death to prevent her from worrying. Salavati from branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court is the presiding judge on the case that is still open for appeal.
Farah Vazehan was arrested on December 29, 2009 (two days after the Ashura protest). She is currently detained in the general women’s ward of Evin prison.
Vazehan was charged with participating in street protests and Moharebeh (waging war against God) by cooperating with the PMOI. She was living abroad for many years and came back to Iran because her 19 year old daughter who is diagnosed with cancer was receiving chemotherapy treatment.
Following the Ashura protests, hundreds of people were detained and many received heavy sentences. Article 27 of the Iranian Constitution declares freedom of assembly, “provided arms are not carried” and the assemblies “are not detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam”.

We are a group opposing two planning applications one by Sainsbury's and one by Tesco's to build out of town superstores in our market town, which has a population of 19,000 approximately. We believe that these stores will destroy our historic market town centre laying waste to hundreds of years of heritage within our town centre area.
An independent survey by The National Retail Forum shows that 93 individual superstore opening led to nett job losses of 25,000. This equates to 276 per store. If these two stores are built and these statistics are replicated Leek will lose 552 jobs nett.
Outrage over the results of the 10th Iranian presidential election is widespread both in Iran and amongst the Iranians overseas.
The elections have been deemed faulty by the canditates Mir Hossein Mousavi Khamene, Mehdi Karroubi, Mohsen Rezaee Mirgha'ed, and a majority of the Iranian people.
The results announced by the government have sparked spontaneous protests of the Iranian people, all over the country, who have consequently been countered violently by the pro-government police and militia, against all democratic principles.
A group of people based in Topeka, Kansas have held protests at fallen soldiers funerals, gay gatherings, and anything else they can protest.
Hunters are set to defy protests and slaughter more than a quarter of a million seals to supply an international trade in furs and health supplements that will soon target Britain's shops.
Sealers are set to defy international protests by clubbing shooting more animals than they have for decades, leaving the Atlantic sea ice off Newfoundland stained red.
The Canadian government has issued licences to shoot or club to death 275,000 harp seals, almost all pups only two weeks old.
The massacre has returned with a vengeance in the past four years following 20 years of strict controls imposed after protests. The two-week-old pups are prized for their soft white fur.
The hunters have vowed to proceed despite the fact that the seal population has already been devastated by global warming, which has melted the ice floes on which the mammals give birth. The lack of ice means that the seals have been forced to give birth in the water, where their pups drown.
Worldwide horror at the hunt led to a boycott of seal fur by most fashion houses and the European Union imposed a ban on certain seal products. To appease animal welfare actitivists, the sealers now try to kill the animals first by shooting them with high-powered rifles, but always carry a club to smash the skulls of any seals that are still alive. However, one group of international vets found that four out of five sealers do not check whether seals are dead before skinning them.
After years of being taboo, seal fur is making a comeback. Last year the Louis Vuitton collection shown in Paris featured coats,tunics and pinafore dresses made from sealskin. Donatella Versace recently featured sealskin in her first collection.
The number of seals being killed has quadrupled in the past four years, and Canadian government scientists estimate the population is declining again by about 1 per cent a year. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans' own documents assert that these forms of commercial trade encourage illegal sealing.
Seal hunting is clearly an industry from another century, and should have been relegated to the history books.
