2. Nuclear Pledge

I am opposed to the building of new nuclear power stations in the UK under any form of public subsidy.

New nuclear power stations have been justified on the basis that they are the best way for the UK to:

  • reduce its emissions of 'greenhouse gases' that cause climate change;
  • close the impending 'energy gap' caused by the closure of existing nuclear and coal power stations;
  • ensure national energy security in the decades ahead.

These arguments are wrong, for the following reasons:

  1. Despite the trillions of dollars invested in nuclear power, and the boundless optimism of nuclear advocates, nuclear power is very expensive. Nuclear power station construction always over-runs on both time and cost estimates, sometimes many times over.

  2. Renewables such as wind and solar electricity are getting cheaper all the time, and costs will continue to fall for many years to come as major industrial countries - including Germany, Japan, China and USA - make huge investments in renewables to secure their energy futures. Any nuclear power stations the UK begins to build now will be made obsolete by advances in renewable technologies, long before they are complete in ten or more years time.

  3. Emissions reductions can best be secured by investing in renewable energy; energy efficiency; microgeneration; energy storage; 'smart grid' / responsive demand technologies; and a trans-continental 'supergrid' stretching from North Africa to the Arctic Circle.

  4. The predicted deficit in the UK's electricity supply can be met, and more, by accelerated investment in renewable energy and microgeneration, and by raising the efficiency of our homes, factories and offices.

  5. A green electricity strategy based on renewables, microgeneration and demand reduction is free of any serious risks or long term liabilities. Nuclear power, by contrast, is associated with many serious hazards:

    • radioactive emissions at every stage of the nuclear life cycle;
    • nuclear waste that remains dangerous for over 100,000 years;
    • the risk of severe nuclear accidents, like Chernobyl and Fukushima, costing hundreds of billions of pounds and rendering thousands of square kilometres uninhabitable;
    • the danger that nuclear power stations and other nuclear facilities will be terrorist targets;
    • the production of plutonium for nuclear bombs.

The open-market insurance cost against nuclear accidents alone is estimated to be worth roughly the entire UK retail electricity price of about 12p per kWh!

  6. The world contains limited resources of energetically viable uranium deposits, and these will quickly run out in the event of a widespread scramble for nuclear power. No viable uranium deposits exist in the UK.

  7. Raising energy efficiency will reduce our dependency on all energy imports. Renewable electricity depends only on wind, wave, tide and sunshine. None of these need to be imported, and they are immune from the vagaries of fuel and energy markets. The UK has the greatest renewable energy potential of any country in Europe, but we have done little to develop it.

I therefore believe that to commit enormous sums of public money to nuclear power - as Government spending, electricity surcharge, carbon subsidy, 'free' public liability insurance, or other means - is profoundly wrong, misguided, reckless and against the public interest.

4. Remove "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance

MCPS sponsor's the daily reciting of The Pledge of Allegiance in all of it's schools. It reads:
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1994, Board of Education of Kiryas Joel Village School District v. Grumet was brought to the Supreme Court. The case involved a religious village in New York who wanted government funding for a school district which promoted their religious beliefs. The Court held that funding this district was an unconstitutional support of a religion, and Justice Souter concluded that as the first amendment states, “government should not prefer one religion to another, or religion to irreligion.”

How then, could it possibly be constitutional for public schools like Wootton to include the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? The inclusion of this phrase promotes not only theism over atheism, but monotheistic sects over polytheistic ones.
The problem with the pledge is that it explicitly promotes monotheism. “Under God” is clearly a reference to a monotheistic supreme being (most likely the Judeo-Christian Yahweh), so the pledge is violating the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause in The Constitution. The pledge reinforces the idea that belief in a single supreme being is the only acceptable belief of American citizens. As an open atheist, what are my chances of being elected as President, or even as a member of Congress? There is currently one openly atheist member of Congress out of 535 total members. There has never been an openly atheist president. While the pledge is not the sole force behind this trend, it is certainly reflects Christianity’s status as the “mainstream” attitude in America. The pledge implies a religious criterion for good citizenship and thus limits my, and many others’ opportunities.

Many argue that “under God” is not actually promoting a belief, but is paying tribute to our nation’s Christian or theistic roots. The first fallacy in this reasoning is that our nation has theistic roots. America was founded as a secular nation, one in which a citizen can follow any belief system that he or she chooses, and will still have the same opportunities and rights as all other Americans. There’s a reason the entire Constitution was written with using the word God once. There’s a reason the original version of the pledge didn’t include the phrase “under God.” Why not pay homage to the secular, assimilationist intent of the pledge itself and leave out “under God”? America is a highly religious nation and this has, despite our explicitly secular Constitution and government, allowed the pledge to slip through the vice of the constitution.

Secondly, those who support the pledge for its historical value are placing this value above constitutional rights. Even if we accept “under God” as important to our nation’s groundwork, that does not automatically give it a get out of jail free card from the constitutional protections of the establishment clause. If it is unconstitutional, it should not be used, no matter how important to our history. Take for instance, slavery. The farming industry that helped start the economy of America depended highly on slavery. This was accepted and even promoted by the founders of our nation. Would it be acceptable if the Pledge of Allegiance said “One nation, under slavery, indivisible…”? Slavery was indeed a factor in starting our nation, but it is unconstitutional and thus has no place in the pledge.

The Constitution clearly prohibits the intertwining of church and state. The pledge clearly violates this. If you disagree, try replacing the phrase “under God” with “under no God.” Imagine the fit that religions and religious citizens would throw if this were the case. This too would be unconstitutional. That is why the pledge should omit any phrase concerning God at all. As Joseph McDaniel Stewart puts it, “you can't have an indivisible nation if you draw a line between the godly and godless."

5. Boycott Casinos - Support Local Businesses & Green Jobs

Dear Friend,

The leadership on Beacon Hill is attempting to open the door to predatory gambling in Massachusetts. They have refused to conduct a proper study of the pros and cons of their proposals. The House passed its casino bill without holding public hearings.

They claim casinos will create jobs. But the facts show that casinos are jobs killers and community-busters. They drain so much money from the local economy that they kill 1.5 jobs for every one they create. And they saddle us with social problems that cost taxpayers $3 dollars for every $1 dollar in tax revenue.

Casinos are not part of the solution. We can create more jobs by investing in the energy-efficient green economy of the future. Casino jobs create addictions. Green jobs give us reliable energy, clean up the air, improve nutrition, reduce chronic disease, health costs, and avert the threat of climate change.

Sign our petition to ask the Massachusetts legislature to say NO to casino gambling.

8. No to Charging Disabled and Older People for Essental Services in Hammersmith & Fulham

This petition has been actioned by Hammersmith & Fulham Coalition against Community Cuts (HAFCAC)

Hammersmith and Fulham Council are seeking to charge disabled and older people for essential services which enable them to live as equal citizens in the community.

The proposed charges of up to £12.40 per hour would negatively impact on the well being of disabled and older people who use essential community care services.

In March 2006, the Labour administration said it would stop charging for home care services. In April 2006, a spokesperson for the Conservative group said, “A Conservative Council will not reintroduce Home Care Charging. The Conservative group has included this as a manifesto pledge.”

Many local disabled and older people feel cheated that the present Conservative Council is proposing a U turn on its election pledge.

Local residents wish to strongly object to the Council's plans.

9. We demand a Referendum on the EU Reform Treaty

In 2004, Tony Blair, the then Labour Party leader and British Prime Minister, promised the country a referendum on the EU Constitution.

He did this because the EU Constitution altered Britain’s relationship with the European Union and handed over a massive amount of power to Brussels. In 2005, the Labour Party fought and won a General Election with the referendum pledge contained in their manifesto.

Also in 2005, the EU Constitution was rejected by French and Dutch voters, ensuring the proposed constitution was scrapped.

Now, in place of the failed EU Constitution, EU leaders, including Prime Minister Gordon Brown, have signed a Reform Treaty, which is almost identical to the EU Constitution. It also involves a huge amount of powers being transferred to Brussels. However, the Labour Party has gone back on its referendum pledge of 2005 and is refusing to give the people a vote.

We, the UK Independence Party South Sefton Branch, believe that this is a disgrace and a betrayal of the British people. Therefore we are calling on Bootle’s Labour MP to follow the lead of his Labour colleagues on Merseyside, Frank Field MP and Bob Wareing MP, and support a referendum.

11. NO FUTURE LEADER WILL HAVE TO KNEEL FOR ME!

The thoughts behind this pledge.

As a petition is only a question to take action in a certain area of policy, it doesn’t take much of the signers to put their autograph beneath it. It can be done with no attention for the goal. The pledge combined with a petition will ask something from the person who puts his autograph beneath it. There is a certain amount of personal value that is invested in this pledge. No one signs this pledge without giving it their attention.

A pledge is not a legal document, and shouldn't be treated as such. It is asking for a man, or womans word to uphold a promise they made.

Don't sign this pledge lightly.

Make it a real commitment to Life.

You will not only influence the leaders. You will influence the collective heart of humanity.

Leadership is an act of taking responsibility.

Warschauer Kniefall is a German term meaning "The Warsaw Genuflection (kneeling)", which refers to the incident on December 7, 1970, in which social democratic Chancellor of Germany Willy Brandt, while visiting a monument to the Nazi-era Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in the then communist Peoples Republic of Poland, very surprisingly, and to all appearances spontaneously, knelt. The occasion was the signing of the Treaty of Warsaw between West Germany and the Peoples Republic of Poland. It should be noted in this context that Brandt himself had actively resisted the Nazi regime.

In historical terms, Brandt gained much renown for this act, and it is thought to be one of the reasons he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971.

While at the time, positive reactions may have been limited, his show of humility was a small but vital step in bridging the gaps World War II had left between Germany and Eastern Europe.

With enough pledges collected, this pledge will turn into a petition for the worlds leaders to sign. It will be taken to the United Nations as a powerfull statement from the people of the world. The more pledges from the people, the more powerfull the statement and pressure on the leaders.

"My greatest succes was having contributed to the fact that, in the world we live in, the name of our country, Germany that is, and the concept of peace can again be mentioned in the same breath."

(Willy Brandt, 1913-1992)

13. Keeping Mr. Edward Jerome Bell (Cabanlit) In The U.S.

January 21, 2006

Mrs. Angela Bridgett Bell

I write this letter to you today, hoping that somewhere, someone can offer me some help. My husband was born in The Philippine in 1963. When he was 9 months old he was adopted by two U.S. citizens. He was legally adopted, and has been here in the U.S. since 1963. He does not read, write, or speak Tagalog. When he was in his youth, he fell in with a 'bad crowd' and got into doing some things he should not have done.

He didn't know he was adopted not until he was sixteen. He regrets the mistakes he has made, and he's serving time for those mistakes, but he has paid his debt to society. I feel very deep in my heart that he has been rehabilitated and he knows the right path to take.

Now as he is reaching the end of his prison sentence he is going to be deported back to the Philippine if we can't prove he is a U.S. citizen behind he will leave a heartbroken family: three sons, five step-children that he loves as his own, uncles and aunts and cousin, as well as myself a wife that is deeply in love with her husband.

The heartbreak of him going to prison was hard enough, but now to lose him across an ocean for a period exceeding his prison sentence is absolutely devastating! I am watching the man I love, get deported back to a country, where he doesn't know anyone nor does he speak their language. If he is deported, they will be sending him to a foreign country America is all he knows. I have an 11 year old son who has Diabetes that loves him he is waiting for his daddy to come home.

I lost my mother in December of 2004 and my husband lost his adopted mother in May 2005 she was sick over my husband being deported. So many would probably be quick to say "Who cares? He broke the law, and he's getting what he deserves." But how many upstanding, law-abiding citizens have had someone close to them someone that they love, that has messed up somewhere along the way.

A son, a daughter, a brother, or a sister- who maybe broke the law, or got involved with drugs, or some other type of negative behavior? It's really easy not to care until it's someone close to you someone that YOU LOVE! Then it becomes a different story. In writing this letter, I am hoping to find an ear that will listen, and hopefully be able to help.

In addition, I hope to bring forward others who may share my pain, so that we may come together and with the strong voice of unity, perhaps we can bring forth CHANGE! Something must be done to stop what is happening, right here in our own country!

These new laws are not fair or just!! Families are being ripped apart. It is both devastating and heartbreaking. In fact, it's downright shameful. Just the mention of the INS fills me with anger and disgust. This has become a nightmare for all of us. Is their any one in office that cares about being just and keeping the families together?

Every day we are living with an unspeakable pain and fear that we will never see each other again. A happy family is on the verge of destruction, not due to natural disaster, but due to the new immigration law. The United States is a humane society that respects human rights and strong family values.

I do not believe, and cannot believe, that it will allow an inhumane thing such as forcing a wife to be separated from a husband, and the children to be separated from a father to happen. I wish you can help me so my husband can stay in the United States with me and his children.

My husband has been released from Prison October 4, 2005. He has been at the Processing Center waiting to be deported.

Please support this petition. Mrs. Angela Bell angiebell20042005@yahoo.com

14. Preserve our Pledge of Allegiance

And [In God We Trust] - there is a movement to have them removed from our money. These words are part of our heritage.

These Movements are being lead by atheist Michael Newdow. The 9th Circuit court ruled that reciting of the pledge in public schools is unconstitutional.

17. Parents Supporting Our Innovative WES Teachers

Three teachers from WES have expressed their desire to request a transfer. These innovative, talented, and energetic teachers are Jennifer Carhart, Janice Martin and Stacey Robichaud. Two of these teachers have had to take on a challenging year of a 3/4 French Immersion MAC class. Even though the MAC class has been proven this year to be very successful, these teachers have felt very little support and appreciation for their hard work and innovation.

In addition to wonderful in class teaching, these teachers are also the foundation for many of the great extra curricular programs at WES including noon hour activities, 100 day celebrations, French week, math club, math days and many others. Most parents can attest to the fact that these are three wonderful, fun and effective teachers - teachers that all kids love and look up to.. 20. Make John Kerry Support Howard Stern

The free speech rights of Howard Stern are being violated by the US Government via the FCC. Since Howard came out against George W. Bush he is being made a target of a secret investigation by Michael Powell's FCC. Howard has elected to support John Kerry on the air but Kerry has already spoken against Howard when Kerry said Clear Channel was right to pull Howard's show from 6 markets. While it is a top priority to get Bush out of office, Kerry may be just as bad unless we the people (and Sterns fans)can convince him in advance of the election to come out against the FCC or at least for Howard's free speech rights. The FCC should not be able to decide what is indecent for us to listen to on the radio in the morning. Those who support taking that minor pleasure from us are wrong-headed and controlling and will eventually destroy our constitution and country with their minority holier than thou attitudes. They are winning the fight but we have not lost the war. Please sign and distribute this petition which will tell Kerry how many registered voters will vote for Nader if Kerry doesn't comply. It seems like the least we could ask of him as we swing the election in his favor.

I will send to Kerry and the DNC the following message along with the petition:

John Kerry, the undersigned petitioners are registered voters or promise they will register to vote in the November election. These voters are adult fans of Howard Stern and are concerned that the right to free speech in our country is being violated by a vocal minority. John Kerry these people pledge to give you our votes but only if prior to the election you take a stand to eliminate the FCC or drastically cut back it's ability to control the "content" of our airwaves. You should realize that a small number of people organize groups of their followers to duplicate complaints and sway the FCC (not to mention advertisers and broadcasters) to penalize broadcasters for barely adult content. The Howard Stern show is certainly not "obscene" and "indecent" is such an arguable word that a court should decide, not a group of politically appointed officials ruling the FCC. John Kerry, if you care about the constitution, you will make this minor step and take a stand in support of Howard's right to do his show and speak his mind.

So the choice is yours, make the pledge and get the votes that will guarantee your victory or don't and know that the votes could go to Ralph Nader and that may cost you the election. The First Amendments right to free speech is so important that every candidate should be speaking out in support of it but instead the opposite is happening.

21. Graduation Pledge

The Graduation Pledge has been adopted by Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, McMaster, Dalhousie, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, and UBC to name a few. The pledge would be tailored to Schulich, but would be something like: "I________ pledge to explore and take into account the social, environmental and ethical consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organisation for which I work".

Some schools have added a sentence in the convocation program, and a few words during the ceremony. Others have worn ribbons to convocation to show their support. The details for Schulich will follow.

Participation is completely voluntary and an entirely personal decision. We are trying to determine how many people would want to take the pledge. As such, if you are interested in taking the pledge at convocation (regardless of when you actually graduate), please indicate this by signing your name and e-mail address. We want to get an idea of how many people are interested. Thanks for your time and support.

26. Pledge to Vote Against Abortion

Abortion is the murder of absolutely innocent human beings for the sake of human irresponsibility and sensuality.

It is the worst holocaust ever seen on earth, in terms of numbers, in terms of the innocence of the victims, and in terms of the betrayal of kin.

Those who fight against abortion have long been suckered into voting for political parties which vaguely promise to do something but actually do nothing.

Therefore we will make it our primary issue when we cast our vote. We absolutely refuse to vote for any political party which will permit abortion to continue. Furthermore we will not throw up our hands and not vote; we will vote AGAINST abortion at every opportunity.

This is not at all futile. It is, in fact, THE way to stop abortion; the only way. At least in western nations, which have a clear Christian majority (eg. 75%), if every Christian would vote against abortion it would have to stop immediately.

Therefore their blood is on Christian hands also.

Please commit yourself to this pledge and put it into action in your life. You can be sure that political parties which don't care about the unborn, these innocent, don't have enough heart to care about you, either. You are not losing anything.

Please help stop this worst holocaust the world has ever seen. Don't be an accessory to murder. Be an accessory to mercy.

27. Keep God in the Pledge of Allegiance

When the story came on the news, I was appalled: 1 person might keep God out of the pledge of allegiance because he doesn't happen to believe in Him? In fact, Constitutionally, they shouldn't be allowed to abolish it. According to the first Amendment, "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech..." Of course, that didn't stop them from taking prayer out of schools.

Many people today believe in God and if they can't say that this country is under God when they truly believe it, they have taken away their rightof expressing religion. Our nation was founded by people who wanted to worship freely, without the government hanging over their heads. Let everyone know that there is no such thing as separation of church and state and stop this before we can no longer worship God at all!

28. Keep the Pledge of Allegiance!

The words "under God" were added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954 to show
the world the stark contrast between the United States of America and the
Communist regime. The words were added because the United States is truly
a nation under God. Our country was built on the principles and foundations
of the Judeo-Christian faith. The men who created our government were men
of strong faith. In establishing this country, they understood the inherent
rights that God, their Creator, gave to all men. The Declaration of
Independence states that certain truths are self-evident. These truths are
"that all men were created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator
with certain unalienable rights . . . ." The Declaration states very boldly
that the United States of America were appealing to the "Supreme Judge" and
that they had a "firm reliance on Divine Providence."

Why is it that a majority of Americans can grasp this concept but that men
educated in the law of this country, the very law stemming from these
principles, cannot? Throughout our history, this country has turned to
Almighty God, our Creator, for guidance and comfort in times of struggle.
In 1775, the Continental Congress called on the Colonies to pray for wisdom in
forming this great nation. At the close of the War for Independence, George
Washington directed his chaplain to offer a prayer of thanksgiving. In 1863
President Lincoln declared a day of humiliation, fasting and prayer. When
Pearl Harbor was attacked the President called on the country to pray.
During the years following World War II when this country was fighting the
Cold War, "In God we Trust" was adopted as our national motto. When Apollo
13 was disabled in space the President called on the country to pray. In
1988 President Reagan signed a bill declaring a National Day of Prayer. In
Desert Storm every soldier received a copy of the 91st Psalm. President Clinton called on this country to pray when the tragedy at Columbine Highschool occurred. And on September 11, 2001, this country experienced a tragedy that was unlike anything we had seen since Pearl Harbor and it was to God that this country turned. President Bush called on people across this nation to pray, a memorial service was televised across the country including many prayers, and many members of Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike, gathered on the steps of the capitol building to sing, "God Bless America."

But on June 26, 2002, a majority of two judges decided that we are no longer
"one Nation under God." This court action is an outrage. It flies in
the face of our national history and traditions.
