1. Protect Peaceful Animal Rights Advocates And Animal Lovers
One animal rights campaigner did not approve of how animals were being treated at a certain place, so she joined a peaceful protest and within seconds the police arrived. Despite the best efforts of the other campaigners, this woman landed with broken legs and arms and just lies in bed and cries herself to sleep most nights.
All they were doing is peacefully and legally saying no. Isn't it about time that we started targetting the ones that actually ARE extremists and not peaceful campaigners?
2. STOP Intrusive Floodlights at Arbolitos Sports Park - Poway, CA
Arbolitos Sports Field was created in 1996 when it became necessary to create a detention basin to prevent flooding south of the current location of Abraxas High School. The Sports Field was created in the process of grading the detention basin in what was originally an open space nature preserve. To secure the cooperation of the local residents, The City of Poway promised that the the Fields would be for DAYTIME USE ONLY and that FLOODLIGHTS would never be installed there for nighttime lighting.
Sports boosters attempted change this agreement in 1998, at which time a REAL LIFE lighting test showed the ADVERSE IMPACT on residents around Arbolitos Park that would result from lighting the Arbolitos Sports Fields, (you could easily read by the light) leading to the proposal to light Arbolitos Park being dropped.
With recent changes to the Poway City Council membership, sports boosters are again trying to go back on previous understandings regarding Arbolitos Park. In response to the renewed request, the Poway City Council directed Study Reports for Noise, Lights and Traffic if FLOODLIGHTS were added to Arbolitos Park for nighttime use. The results of the studies were presented at a Neighborhood Meeting on July 7th. City Staff is updating their analyses and will present their recommendations at the Poway City Council Meeting on September 7th. Significant SHORTCOMINGS were identified for the TRAFFIC, NOISE, and LIGHT Studies during the presentation at the July 7th Neighborhood Meeting.
A MAJOR SHORTCOMING of the studies was that they relied heavily on computer modeling with results that do not match the real world experience of neighborhood residents. Other issues with the current direction being taken for Arbolitos Park include the incorrect assumption that IMPACT OF THE FLOODLIGHTS would be restricted to only a few residents on Crestwood Avenue, the potential loss in property values has not addressed or considered, and the promises made by Poway Youth Soccer to cover the cost of the lighting Arbolitos Field are not enforceable, leaving the expense to be paid for by the City of Poway. City Staff have stated that the City would DIVERT THE NECESSARY FUNDS from other operations budgets to cover any funding shortfall.
Further review of the study results have shown there are other shortcomings with the proposal to add floodlights to Arbolitos Sports Fields, including determination if installing floodlights would violate agreements with FEMA regarding the detention basin, whether the Arbolitos fields could stand up to the proposed additional use, and the effect that lights would have on local wildlife. The renewal of the proposal to light Arbolitos Park is a BREACH OF TRUST with Arbolitos residents by the City of Poway and highlights a CONCERN FOR ALL RESIDENTS near any of Poway’s neighborhood Parks. Lighting neighborhood parks will SERIOUSLY DAMAGE Poway resident’s QUALITY OF LIFE and threatens to turn Poway, “The City in the Country” into just .....a City.
Background
For thousands of years it appears that mankind has been obsessed with war. The focal point of historical development as taught in most countries is largely war or other major conflict.
In 2007, Wikipedia catalogued six major wars – ‘causing destruction of outstanding severity’ –and 27 ‘other conflicts – some on-going for more than sixty years!
In the 1914-18 World War less than 5% of casualties were civilians; now, more than 75% are non-combatants.
The military action of Georgia against South Ossetia on 8.8.08 raised the spectre of all enveloping global conflict once more.
Israel continues to stoke the fires for (nuclear!) war with Iran
Obama is already talking of more troops for Afghanistan
Why does a species that has learned to sail the seas in ships of steel, fly through the air like birds, eradicate diseases, and beam sound and pictures around the planet prove unable to master the simple art of peaceful co-existence?
The Alternative - The Solution
Isn’t it time to speak out for what the ordinary man or woman has come to know full well, but our ‘leaders’ seem incapable of understanding: war solves nothing.
It never has and never will.
Sons and daughters, husbands and wives are the inevitable victims of a handful of individuals who create the conditions of war to get away with what at other times would be indefensible.
Yes, as Robert MacNamara observed, “At times, we may have to live with an imperfect, untidy world.” But diplomacy, discussion, engagement to seek a win-win situation for the good of all is the only solution to disagreement.
Why now?
There are those behind the US Government pushing for global hegemony. War may be their way of 'saving the dollar'. The sovereignty of Russia and China will be threatened. The US has neither the wealth nor the forces for a conventional conflict, but it does have a stockpile of nuclear weapons - standing idle as it were.
4. Stop abuses by the government of Georgia
The Government of President Saakashvili has revealed its authoritarian nature, ordering SWAT teams to violently curb peaceful protest in streets of Tbilisi.
On November 7, 2007 at approximately 5 am Georgian SWAT teams violently dispelled a peaceful manifestation outside the building of Parliament in Tbilisi. Police used teargas, water, rubber bullets and blunt force clubs against peaceful demonstrations.
Opposition leaders who were engaged in a hunger strike and lying on the street were severely beaten. Koba Davitashvili of People’s Party and singer George Gachechiladze are in hospitals in critical conditions. Others face the risk of prosecution on the charges of treason.
Around 5 p.m., riot police again attacked opposition demonstrators who had gathered some kilometers away from the Parliament.
508 people had sought emergency assistance due to injuries and gas poisoning. Some of them are in critical condition. Georgia’s ombudsman, Sozar Subari, was also attacked by riot police with rubber truncheons. Riot police later raided the private television station, Imedi TV and forced it and the Kavkasia television station to stop broadcasting. Later in the evening, the government declared the state of emergency and suspended a number of legal rights. Electronic and print media was prohibited to cover news stories.
For the moment, members of the Parliamentary Majority and the President have made statements, threatening to arrest those that speak against the clampdown.
The protest rally started on November 2, 2007, when tens of thousands of protestors, led by the 10-party opposition coalition, gathered outside the parliament on Tbilisi’s main street. The protest organizers had informed the government of their intention to gather at the parliament building, as required under Georgian law.
Several thousand protestors continued to demonstrate peacefully for five days outside the parliament. They demanded timely parliamentary elections and reform of the election management body and voting system.
