As an original Woodstock Survivor who sat in the mud with 500,000 brothers and sisters the weekend of August 15, 16, 17, 1969 I witnessed first hand the love , the sharing, and the sacrifice of those that attended. A half million people were galvanized in the mud together. Here the seeds of brotherhood and compassion were sown which healed this Nation.

It's time for us to return to these core values once more. a National Holiday will help us focus on what this histroric event has come to symbolize.

65. Stop the rebel group Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and arrest its leader Joseph Kony

Petition for the protection of those affected by the rebel group Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the arrest of its leader Joseph Kony

The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) is a rebel group originally from Uganda and formed over two decades ago to oppose the Ugandan government. Now the group has lost political focus and have turned into Africa's most lethal 'killing machine'. They are destabalizing the entire Central African region.

The LRA have spread to South Sudan, Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo. Atrocities include child abductions for the purpose of creating child soldiers and sex slaves, raping and killing and horrendous mutilations to instil fear on local civilians.

The LRA leader Jospeph Kony was given a Warrant of Arrest in 2005 by the International Criminal Court. He is still at large.

Currently the Ugandan army is receiving limited international support and it is the only official army aiming to end the LRA's tyranny.

International awareness needs to be raised on this issue. We therefore want the UK government to set an example for the international community by raising the issue of the LRA with other nations and to show support to governments of the region affected by LRA violence.

Global climate change, a threat to human survival, is primarily caused by automotive exhaust.

Wars are being fought with devastating effect over the control of petroleum resources mostly consumed by automobiles.

Cars kill hundreds of thousands through accidents and pollution of air, water, and soil. They are also primary components of noise and light pollution. Driving a car is particularly damaging to the health of the driver, but impacts everyone around negatively.

Cars are an unnecessary expense, costing the average driver over half of their income. More than half the cost of driving is subsidized through government maintenance of infrastructure and cleanup. Not only do cars drive you to work, they drive up taxes.

MJ did not openly promote his Charity for self gain
and all of these good deeds and the music he gave us which was always clean, compared to what is out there today get swept away when the tabloids jump all over the lies and allegations of him, saying the most hurtful things that anyone who has seen an interview or watch him live on stage would be able to tell you is utter trash, he was innocent and he loved god and Jesus very much.

70. Meat free Monday Canada

Canada is the #4 biggest polluter on earth, yet has a relatively small population. Canada reputation for being a dinosaur in the Climate Crisis must change ASAP.

This petition calls for Canadian officials to take immediate action by adopting “Meat Free Mondays” and promoting the many health and environmental benefits of the pure vegetarian (vegan) lifestyle to the general public

LIVESTOCK’S ROLE IN GLOBAL WARMING IS HUGE

According to a 2006 report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of The United Nations (FAO), entitled “Livestock's Long Shadow”: The FAO report found that livestock production causes 18 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions, including nine percent of all carbon dioxide emissions, 37 percent of methane and 65 percent of nitrous oxide which is 296 times more potent than CO2 as a global warming gas. According to Dr. Kirk Smith, a member of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and professor at University of California-Berkeley, methane is 100 times more potent than CO2 within 5 years of being emitted.

Scientists across the globe have recognized that climate change is happening so fast, human civilization is under threat if we don’t do something within the next few years to significantly reverse the trend of global warming. At the same time, researchers have also realized that although CO2 is the most prevalent gas by weight, even if we were to achieve a zero carbon economy today, the earth will continue to warm hundreds if not thousands of years.

For this reason, if we want to preserve the planet for our children’s generation, we need to reduce those gases and aerosols causing the greatest effect on global warming in the short term, thus giving us time to develop CO2 reduction technologies that can be commercially deployed.

RAPID PLANETARY COOLING SOLUTIONS:

In March 2009, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated that in order to achieve rapid cooling in the short term, we need to reduce methane, ozone (the second most prevalent gas after methane), and black carbon. Reducing the consumption of animal products is the single fastest way to reduce these emissions.

• Reduce Methane: Livestock are the single largest source of human-caused methane in the US and on the planet, and 2/3 of it dissipates from the atmosphere in about 10 years. Note also that the IPCC estimated that even if we were to change the feed of animals and capture methane from manure lagoons, by 2030 we would only reduce 9 percent of the methane from agriculture, so these methods are not viable options for seriously reducing emissions rapidly.
• Ozone, the third most prevalent gas after methane, and CO2, depends upon methane as a building block. Because it dissipates out of the atmosphere in a few hours or days, as soon as we reduce breeding of livestock and the numbers decrease due to lower demand, we will see planetary cooling within hours or days.
• Black carbon is 800 times more potent than CO2, and NASA scientists have begun to realize black carbon plays a role in the melting of the Arctic and Antarctic. Brazilian scientists measuring black carbon in Antarctica found greater levels of black carbon than NASA estimated, and estimated 70 percent of it came from South America, where the single largest source of black carbon is the burning of the rainforests to create crops and grazing for livestock. Livestock are responsible for over 80% of Amazon destruction in Brazil.

MEAT REDUCTION AROUND THE GLOBE

Ghent, Belgium has shown leadership and recognized the importance of promoting vegetarianism as a solution to addressing climate change and reducing its carbon footprint by ask its citizens to go meatless one day a week.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8046970.stm

Other countries and institutions are also recognizing the need to promote pure vegetarianism (veganism). The United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) will be cutting meat (and dairy) from the menus of hospitals across the UK in an effort to cut costs and carbon. Its one part of NHS hospitals strategy to reduce carbon emissions throughout the hospital system.

Following Paul McCartney's Meat Free Monday mission in the UK, Israeli restaurants are also participating in going veggie for at least one day a week.

VEGAN RESTAURANTS ARE BOOMING DUE TO STRONG DEMAND

Most people have become aware of the health promoting effects of a plant-based diet, and want to reduce their consumption of animal products but 1) subsidies make meat and dairy cheaper and 2) restaurants do not offer them enough vegan options to delight their palate. Their desire is reflected in the growth of vegan restaurants and vegan options in food service.

In spite of the economic downturn, Restaurant & Institution Magazine has noted in several articles in the last year that vegan restaurants are booming.

Cruzer Pizza in Los Angeles demonstrated this dramatically in May 2009 when they added vegan cheese and veggie meats as pizza toppings and their sales went up by 63 percent in one month.

ENDING WORLD HUNGER
If you want to stop 1 billion people from going hungry at night each day; If you want to stop the needless deaths taking place every 5 seconds due to starvation then a vegan lifestyle is the solution to solve these dyer diet driven situations due to the inefficient use of resources directed towards animal agriculture. Grain currently fed to livestock is enough to feed 2 billion people. According to a recent report by Compassion in World Framing, "[c]rops that could be used to feed the hungry are instead being used to fatten animals raised for food." It takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just 1 pound of edible animal flesh.

Animal agriculture is having detrimental impacts on the health of the environment as well as on human health; thus reducing our consumption of this carbon and methane intensive product as an effective solution to halt climate change.

So please sign this petition and forward it to you friends and family.

Noise Free America strongly supports reestablished funding for the Office of Noise Abatement and Control (ONAC) within the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). President Obama should include adequate yearly funding for ONAC in his proposed federal budget.

The American public cares greatly about noise pollution. A Census Bureau report indicates that noise is Americans‟ number one complaint about their neighborhoods, and the most significant reason why they wish to move. In many cities, noise is the most frequent complaint made to police departments.

In 1972, the EPA estimated that 134 million Americans were exposed to non-occupational noise capable of causing hearing loss, that 44 million Americans lived in residential dwellings exposed to high levels of aircraft and transportation noise, and that 21 million Americans faced potentially disruptive levels of construction noise.

76. Working Together for Peace and Unity in Luton

At a meeting hosted by Churches Together in Luton (CTL) and Luton Council of Mosques (LCoM) on Wednesday 13th May 2009, Muslim and Christian leaders in Luton called for peace and good neighbourly relations in the face of the activities of those who would challenge the peace of our town.

We signed the following statement as a commitment to be good neighbours, and as an invitation to others to join us. We are asking our representatives in national and local government to join us or to support us in that commitment, as well as all candidates running in the June 4th elections for the Eastern England seats in the European Parliament. We call on the media to acknowledge and respect that commitment, and to work with us to report on the efforts to build peace and unity in Luton.

In making this statement we recognise the differences there are between our faiths, but we choose to build on those things which unite us. Most importantly, the call to love God and love our neighbours is central to each of our Holy Scriptures. Together with others working for good interfaith relations in the town, we will do all we can to support the building up of common ground between us. We are aware of all the challenges we face, separately and together, especially in the time of economic hardship. We seek to respond to those challenges in friendship and cooperation rather than through prejudice, hatred, racism and religious intolerance.

We are now calling on others in Luton and beyond to join us or support us making this same commitment.

Names, email addresses and any other contact details given here will be kept private only be used for the purposes of PeaceInLuton.

77. Sri Lanka - Help Eradicate terrorism

A Democratically elected government with a mandate to eradicate terrorism is fighting terrorism with the LTTE, a terrorist outfit in Sri Lanka with links to Al-Qaeda.

Due to misinformation spread by the LTTE and its sympathisers, the US is calling for further ceasefires in order to minimize further civilian casualties. The history has shown that such ceasefires have not produced tangible results as LTTE is holding civilians as human shields against their will. Those who resisted the LTTE have been either beaten or killed.

Also, there is a push to save the leaders of the LTTE, one of the most brutal terrorist orgnaisations in the world, who masterminded and executed killings of prominent political leaders such as Rajiv Ghandi, the 7th Prime Minister of India.

We, a group of peace loving Sri Lankans earnestly request the US and the international community to provide support to the Sri Lankan government to eradicate terrorism out of Sri Lanka and the world and not to help negotiate escape routes for such terrorists. For, terrorism has to be completely and comprehensively eradicated.

The $275 million dollars spent daily on the War on Terrorism is a disgrace. War is child abuse, no matter which country or which home it invades.

President Obama announced in his acceptance speech in Texas, that he would end the war in 2009.

To date, $656.1 billion dollars have been allocated to the war in Iraq. The national, state, and local numbers provided are based on the full amount of funding approved to date for Fiscal Year 2009.

These numbers do not currently include President Obama's request for an additional $75.5 billion dollars for FY2009 war funding. When his administration releases the full budget in April 2009, these numbers will increase.

81. FOSWAL Indo-Pak Peace Campaign

The recent tragic incidents of unprecedented horror in Bombay have pushed all of us in the creative fraternity, particularly the sensitive fiction writers and poets, artists and academics, social philosophers and peace activists and journalists of both Pakistan and India, in deep depression.

We honestly feel that when the river is in flood, and the winds are howling, blowing in the opposite direction, that is the time for creative and sensitive people to hold hands and swim against the current.

We agree that mutual relations among the SAARC neighbours are better than what they were twenty one years back when we launched our efforts for peace way back in 1987. We feel all of us the creative fraternity of the neighbouring countries, should put in more effort, be more genuinely aware of the turbulences, and should own our responsibility to have serious deliberations about the issues of fundamentalism and terrorism, and recognize the evil design of forces which manufacture terrorism.

We at Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature (FOSWAL) are keen to engage voices of reason and sanity in both countries to take the debate about inclusiveness of democracy to the marginalized sections of society, and raise a joint voice for peace, compassion, and good-neighbourly relations which can be genuinely relevant in building a joint voice for peace, ringing out a loud and clear message that we need peace and not war, we need ‘roti’ and not the bombs !

  • 84. Send UN Peacekeepers into Gaza and the West Bank Now

    Hi,

After reading Mark Joyner’s 'How to End the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict' blog post I decided to create a global petition to rally support for his plan. Mark's plan decidedly avoids pointing fingers at anyone - it only asks for 3rd party intervention to provide security for all of the innocent civilians in Gaza, the West Bank, and the surrounding Israeli towns - the vast majority of whom simply want to be left alone to live in peace.

    Why sign this petition?

There is almost universal support around the world to send peacekeepers into Gaza and the West Bank, but some members of the UN Security Council block these efforts consistently. Mounting public support for an issue has influenced the decisions of governments in the past. This petition, as it gains wider and wider support, will have a greater and greater chance of having such an effect.

After you sign the petition below, we request that you use the tools on the
following page to tell your friends and post this petition on your site.

    Thank you,

"I love people. All people. No group is more deserving of human rights than another."  Mark Joyner

    87. Allow Eid/Christmas Gifts for Children of Gaza

Justice for Gaza (JFG) is a humanitarian organisation which strives to supply basic needs to the suffering children of Gaza. On the 5th of December, 2008, a big van loaded full of clothes and toys as Eid/Christmas gifts for the children in Gaza will depart from London and drive all the way to Gaza.

Previously, in August 2007, a JGF van containing medical supplies was denied entry into the Gaza strip by the Egyptian authorities. The van was stranded at the Rafah border for a month. Egyptian authorities presented many and varied bureaucratic excuses to justify their refusal to allow entrance of the medicine. The latest was that the medicine was not accounted for in an item by item list. As the medicine was donated by various generous supporters in the UK, Al Niss and Willis did not have one list with receipts to present to Egyptian authorities. Yet Egyptian authorities refused the suggestion to have a third party, like the Egyptian Red Crescent, unload and supervise the itemizing of the medical supplies.

We do not want a similar ridiculous situation to repeat itself. Please sign the petition below to enable the delivery of donated gifts to the children of Gaza.

    88. Release the Prisoners of War

“For those who can not speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute, speak up and judge fairly. Defend the rights of the poor and needy.” Proverbs 31: 8-9

Interfaith Movement for Peace and the Release of Cammayo and Tumol (IMPACT)

    UNITY STATEMENT
(adopted as a work in progress at the November 27, 2008 Round-table Discussion
& Launching of IMPACT at Chippens Restaurant, Roxas Avenue, davao City)

We, members and convenors of Interfaith Movement for Peace and the Release of Cammayo and Tumol (IMPACT), commit ourselves to and advocate for the genuine peace-building and interfaith solidarity which are salient at this time when incessant hostilities between two warring parties-- the Government of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) have been erupting all over Mindanao.

With the escalating numbers of human rights violations victimizing the hapless civilian populace, the constant threats and fears and the repeated fleeing of residents due to war happening in their communities, the killings of many soldiers from both sides and soldiers held as captives, it is in this Signs of Times that we come together to reverberate our loudest call for justice and genuine peace in our land.

With utmost consideration that 1Lt. Vicente Cammayo, company commander of the 11th Special Forces Company - 3rd SF Battalion, and PO3 Eduardo Cruzada Tumol of the 1105th Provincial Mobile Group-Philippine National Police (PNP) are still in the hands of the New Peoples Army (NPA) and being held as Prisoners of War (POW), we come as one to come up with safe and speedy resolution to this case.

Cammayo was captured in a tactical offensive by the NPA on the 3rd Special Forces Battalion at Sitio Anagase, Barangay Casoon in Monkayo, Compostela Valley last November 7. Tumol, on the other hand, was abducted at a checkpoint conducted by the NPA on November 5 in Barangay Baogo in Caraga, Davao Oriental.

These incidents further bring to light the matter of the peace negotiations with the short-term and long-term issues that are intimately related to it.

We are calling for the immediate and safe release of the two aforementioned prisoners of war on humanitarian grounds. We are urging the National Democratic Front of the Philippines to heed this call and we appeal to the New Peoples Army to adhere to the Geneva Protocols in handling humanely the Prisoners of War. We also deem it important that the government must be fully engaged with the case of the Prisoners of War and working to resolve this as soon as possible.

The families of both POW have been appealing on both sides for the immediate release of their kins. It is placing untold stress on their families; everyday they are waiting for firm news and updates with mounting anxiety. They have been waiting for the safe release of the two as they expressed hope that their kins will be released soon that they may join their respective families this Christmas. We are urging the government to return to the peace negotiating table so that no more families will have to go through this kind of torment and to start a step towards the path for genuine and lasting peace.
We strongly believe that there is an urgent need to suspend offensive military operations to facilitate the release of the two Prisoners of War (POW). It is the Government's responsibility to establish a conducive ground and condition for the safe and immediate release of the POW as well as to restore the basis for peace negotiations between the GRP and the NDFP. The Prisoners of War's well-being must be considered. Ultimately, the fate of the POW depends on establishing a just and lasting peace. We call on to the government to focus their efforts on ending this crisis.
We believe that there is no solution to the conflict by continued warfare and violence. Therefore, we declare that peace negotiations have to start without preconditions that might lead to further hostilities.

We come together with tremendous hope to defend life amidst forces of death, to overwhelm war with peace, and fight oppression with justice. We call for new policies based on the peaceful resolution of disputes between the two opposing parties in our country – the Government of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP); respect for national sovereignty, Geneva Protocol, Comprehensive Agreement for the Respect of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; the defense and regard of basic democratic freedoms to all; and social and economic justice.

We also seek to build a broad mass movement for peace and justice composed of church people, lawyers, academe, professionals, members of Local Government Unit and other sectors who are ready to painstakingly engage in the just struggle for genuine peace. We must understand that peace does not mean silence amidst injustice. It is one that recognizes the right to life and human dignity, a peace that is based on the common aspirations for a free and just society.
“Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God.” (Matthew5:9)

    89. Stop Child Soldiers

More than 300,000 children are thought to be fighting in some 30 conflicts around the world. Most are between 15 and 18 years old, but many are as young as 10. Some are even younger.

Casualty rates are extremely high. Child soldiers are often subjected to sexual violence and extreme physical and emotional abuse intended to make them obedient and ruthless killers. This is in addition to the harm done by the denial of basic childhood needs for security, health and education.

In January 2000, the governments of the world agreed to ban the use of children in combat. This treaty, called the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict, came into force on February 12, 2002. Canada was the first government to ratify.

The Optional Protocol requires governments to take all feasible measures to ensure that children under the age of 18 do not take part in hostilities. All compulsory recruitment - or conscription - of under-18-year-olds is banned, and governments are required to raise the age of voluntary recruitment to a minimum of 16. Unusually, the Optional Protocol also applies to armed groups, banning all military recruitment (voluntary or compulsory) and use of children under 18.

A number of governments have already signed the Protocol but not yet made a final legal commitment by ratifying. These include: Sudan, the Netherlands, Lebanon, Cuba and Indonesia.

    90. Save The Planet

The vision of Save The Planet is to contribute towards the creation of a Planetary Peace Culture looking to life and common humanism as the core values for a sustainable society.

During the last few decades, a radical change has occurred in humanity's awareness of itself. In simple terms, we have, over the millennia, translated ourselves from "oneness to aloneness".

The truth is that all life on the planet is connected. This newly acquired state of aloneness and alienation causes considerable discomfort. this initiative attempts to understand what we have become and illuminates our future potential.

Humankind has reached a state of development in which old modes of thinking and behaving threaten to destroy our planet. This is becoming patently obvious to people of all political and religious persuasions. We are living through a global crisis in which only a profound revolution can save us from total self-destruction. Those of us who are dedicated to the preservation of life must play a prominent part in this revolution, which calls for a substantial change in our manner of thinking.

On social, environmental and health fronts we are confronting a critical transition. We are facing the results of an epistemology which focuses on material and rational values, human supremacy and competition for domination. Will this transition be into chaos and destruction or will it be into the new paradigm based on spiritual, ecological connectedness and cooperation.

Save The Planet aims to contribute towards this next great global step - The Final Frontier, acknowledging the common ground of humanity and its connectedness with all life.

Save The Planet is an Initiative which aims to create a global alliance of individuals and organizations dedicated to building a world of peace in which we all live in freedom, harmony, cooperation and co-prosperity.

We have come together as concerned Global citizens realizing that with increasing Global population requiring more and more resources with tremendous inequality of distribution our planet is reaching breaking point in terms of economic and ecological crises.

This is having profound social and cultural effects. We require urgent ecological, social, economic and political solutions to problems which affect billions of people if we are to survive sustainably.

Save The Planet calls for spiritual, ecological and holistic world views, derived from perceptions of connectedness and interdependence.
The essence of a sustainable future lies in the quality of the individual and their positive contribution to society. Optimization of health and lifestyle for every person is the key to our future.
