1. Install appropriate Brant Road Surgery crossing

Brant Road is a busy road at most times of the day with increased traffic at the usual peak times. A significant number of people including those less able bodied and those with young children cross the road to access Brant Road Surgery as well as schools, shops and homes.

Brant Road continues to have issues with speeding vehicles creating greater challenge for those wishing to cross the road. Brant road is too wide and therefore too dangerous for a zebra crossing so a pelican crossing is required both for safety reasons and to aid community cohesion.

2. Hands off our West Common

The West Common in Lincoln is under threat. There are plans to turn the West Common into a racecourse. The racecourse would go all around the perimeter of the West Common, accompanied by a tarmac road two cars wide, an 8 feet fence, 100 stables, buildings to support racing, and also parking and viewing facilities.

The impact of a racecourse would have a severely negative impact on the existing wildlife, the availability of green open space in the city of Lincoln, on free access to common land, on the responsible activities the West Common is used for, and on the traffic conditions in and around Lincoln (a major artery into the city – the A57 – would have to closed on racing days).

The West Common community group would like to invite you to sign our petition against a racecourse on common land.

On our previous petition website we had more than 650 signatures. Regrettably we had to take down that website, due to i being no longer accessible. If you see the counter on this website, please add up 657 signatures; this gives you the true number of all people who have signed up.

Please also have a look at our website www.handsoffourcommon.co.uk for more information.

3. Introduction of teaching program at UniSA Whyalla Campus

There is a need and opportunity for the University of South Australia to offer a teaching degree in Whyalla. This opportunity will address the critical skills shortage in the area of teaching, especially in regional and rural areas of South Australia, ( the Electorate of Grey) Teachers are of the utmost importance to the future of our society, and we believe and are concerned about the educational disadvantage faced by families and students, in Whyalla and surrounding areas.

We have a wonderful campus here, training country students who wish to teach, here in Whyalla will enable us to retain our teachers. It is important that regional students have more options of what, where and how they study. Retention of teachers (and young people) in regional areas is such an important issue.

4. Cease Coyote Hunting on Niagara 12 Landfill

This petition is in response to a motion made on Sept 3, 2008 by Public Works Committee to permit members of the Ontario Federation of Hunters and Anglers to enter the Niagara Road 12 Landfill areas to hunt and kill coyotes.

 Some valid information pertaining to the humane control of coyotes in California:

-A state that had an on-going problem with coyotes. However, in the past decade California has shown positive results with non-lethal coyote control. By sharing some of their studies and public information, it may shed light on how to respond to the situation in our own back yard.

The California Statistics Service found that in areas where coyote populations have been lethally controlled, the ratio of females to males increase and animals from outside areas quickly fill the void! Coyote control causes an increase in litter size (from 4 to 10 pups) and increases the number of yearling females breeding. Like wolves, coyotes allow only the alpha pair to breed and disruptions to the pack cause all females within that pack to breed.
Killing Coyotes Increases Overall Coyote Populations!

Lethal control techniques have ensured that only the most resilient coyotes survive, resulting in the creation of a "super coyote.' Non-lethal predator controls appear to be cheaper and more efficient in the long term.

Non-lethal predator control methods have proven, in California, to
effectively and humanely ward off predators without disrupting ecosystems. Successful methods include the use of guard dogs, mixing sheep with cattle, frightening devices, fencing, penning during lambing and calving , and the removal of carcasses from birthing areas. Using two or more of these techniques together have dramatically reduced the need for lethal predator control in the state of California.

These non-lethal methods allow wild animals to maintain their important roles in the ecosystem. Since coyotes eat mostly rodents, not sheep, some local farmers say that leaving the coyotes alone helps reduce rodent problems on their land. As well, coyotes control the deer population.
The California Statistics Service also found that for cattle and calf deaths, coyotes caused 1.6% of all deaths and those predators overall only caused 2.7% of cattle and calf deaths. Other causes of death were far greater: digestive problems, respiratory problems, unknown causes, birthing, weather, poison and theft.

While the percentage of damage actually caused to livestock was relatively low, the cost of lethal wildlife control was high. When state and local contributions were added, coyotes killed at an average cost easily exceeding $100 per animal. Costs sometimes exceeded $2,000 per animal. It was reported that in every western state, the cost of Wildlife Service's livestock protection work exceeded reported livestock losses.

Inhumane trapping and killing is NOT an effective means of controlling wildlife!

Only deterrence is effective and proper fencing has proven to be 100% effective- it's also cheaper and safer, since coyotes primarily come out at night.

Here is some information on coyotes and ways to deter them.

Chickens, rabbits and other small animals often kept outdoors should be kept in well-protected areas and in sturdy cages at night. Cages made of chicken wire will not keep desperate coyotes or other predators from entering. Stronger gauge wiring is a necessity in protecting these small animals.

If you follow these guidelines, you will not only keep coyotes away but also other wildlife, stray dogs, feral cats and robbers.

Keep your cat or small dog indoors. You wouldn't leave a pile of money sitting out on the street. Don't leave your pet out there either in coyote territory. Coyotes are actually the least of your pet's worries. Your pet can be killed by cars, dogs, cats, kids, poison...

Accompany your small dog on a leash in a well-lighted area at night for walks. It's best to walk small dogs on a leash in the daytime.

Fence your property with tall solid fences buried under the ground with "Coyote Roller" on top, or angled with barbed wire.

Don't allow pets to roam from home, especially at night

Don't leave water bowls for pets outdoors

Don't leave garbage containers open
Don't trap them. They rarely get in a trap and it's expensive. Coyotes roam
100 miles so unless you're willing to follow across the country, it will
rarely keep that one coyote away and may cause two more coyotes to come and
fight for the new territory.

Block all entrances to the crawl space under your house so they can't den.

Don't leave pet food outside, particularly at night

Don't poison them- you will end up poisoning your cat, dog, kids besides attracting raccoons, insects and disease. It's not even effective.

Don't shoot them. They are generally only visible at night. If you try to
shoot one, you will probably shoot your neighbor or dog instead. It's also illegal to shoot a firearm in most cities, counties or near homes.

5. Upgrade cable service from analog to hi-def at Lincoln at Wolchase Apartments

The Direcpath cable service at Lincoln at Wolfchase apartments located in Cordova, Tennessee does not offer digital or high-definition service, yet residents are charged the same or higher rates as companies like Comcast or Time-Warner that do offer these services.

Satellite TV vendors (DirecTV or Dish Network) do offer service but only those residents that face south are allowed to purchase the service due to a ban, by ER management) on Satellite dishes being attached to the exterior of the building.

The current cable service is an inferior analog product, that does not meet the minimum federal requirements for digital service starting in 2009.

7. RECOGNITION FOR THE ABRAHAM LINCOLN BRIGADE VETERANS

Every one has seen the “Republican” Political action committee ads posing supposed veterans when those are not all veterans. With all the lip service paid by reactionary establishment leadership to freedom and democracy as they wave the American flag time and time again like trained monkeys, it is time to draw a line in the sand to expose their lies and deceit.

In regard to veterans first conned into the service by recruiting officers, then sent to war to be used as cannon fodder and then neglected in health care when they return they do not really give a damn, nor do they care about freedom and democracy for they follow a long established policy of deceit from which they derive their linage:

Between 1936-39 preceding World War II, while the conservative leadership of the so called free bourgeois democratic world (including President Roosevelt Prime Minister Chamberlain) appeased Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, and the reactionary Roman Catholic Church hierarchy there was a group of Americans that gave up they youth, and lives to fight fascism called the Abraham Lincoln Brigade *1 they did not sit comfortably at home.

The Abraham Lincoln Brigade volunteers were part of the International Brigades a greater effort comprising tens of thousands of anti-fascist volunteer combatants that went to Spain to defend the democratically elected government of Spain against Franco fascists in league with the German Nazis and fascist Italian troops in support of American interests. While the Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy bombed Spanish cities in support of Spanish fascism, the great liberals foundations of the Industrial world sat by and did nothing or collaborated with the fascists.

Members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade came from many walks of life and different political progressive political backgrounds left without the approval and consent of their government returned to be label premature anti-fascists and communist when they weren’t.

Whereas the Flying Tigers received the approval and recognition of the US government and Roosevelt five years after the start of the Spanish conflict, the veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade never received such recognition, nor were they accorded pensions, benefits, or allowed into the US military when World War II started.

Whereas European members of the resistance were accorded honors by their respective governments all Abraham Lincoln Brigade veterans should be given, or posthumously receive all honors and benefits as American (US) veterans of World War II would of received.

*1 Abraham Lincoln Brigade - In the Spanish Civil War, a brigade consisted of four to six battalions. [1] American volunteers mostly joined the two battalions (the Lincoln Battalion and the Washington Battalion) within XV International Brigade. The XV International Brigade was made up of six battalions of volunteers from nations around the globe, topped up with Spanish conscripts. [2]

As time went on, the name Abraham Lincoln Brigade became used loosely, in the United States, as shorthand to describe any unit with an American component. Volunteers from the United States also served with the Canadian Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion; the Regiment de Tren (transport); and the John Brown Anti-Aircraft Battery. North Americans also ran a very well-organized and well-equipped field hospital (funded and staffed by the American Medical Bureau to Save Spanish Democracy).

8. Petition to Save Lincoln-Sudbury

Two of the four candidates running for School Committee are proposing reactionary schemes to manage L-S.
Their suggestions are entirely contrary to the spirit of L-S, and their election might very well have a dramatic negative impact on the day to day management life at our school.

One of these candidate is Douglas Zingale, who believes, "Urgency is not being demonstrated and needs to be demonstrated." In his view, "Specific actions should be taken now including making sure the people responsible for not bringing this to people’s attention are removed from the decision making at the school.""

In other words, Douglas Zingale is running for school committee with preconcieved notions of who should be fired. This is his view despite the amazing job done by the L-S faculty on January 19th and the fact that there is a committee already established to look into the tragedy to see if anyone SHOULD be held responsible.

The second candidate, Kevin Matthews "said there is a lack of accountability at L-S, some of which stems from the school committee giving Superintendent/Principal John Ritchie a rubber stamp for many policies" (Sudbury Town Crier March 15th). He went on to say that he is "also for increasing measures at L-S. There’s a lot of technology we can use." According to the Town Crier, "His suggestions include smart cards to give students access to the building and installing video cameras throughout the campus"

The Town Crier also quoted Matthews as saying, "These are procedures that are very common on a college campus. I don’t see any reason why we can’t implement them at L-S."

To summarize, Matthews is showing great opposition to our amazing superintendent Dr Ritchie's policies in running the school and wants to introduce "smart cards" and video cameras in L-S. He is the candidate advocating the most dramatic changes despite the fact that he is the one candidate who has not had a child who has been in Lincoln-Sudbury RHS yet.

The two other candidates are Radha Gargeya and Jack Ryan, both of whom have pledged to respect the unique culture of Lincoln Sudbury.

9. Master Certified Instructors

Recently there were a few instructors at Lincoln Technical Institute in Indianapolis that were dismissed from their jobs because they were not ASE master certified.

The students at Lincoln Tech believe they should have extra time to take the tests to become master certified and not be let go because they are really good teachers and very well liked throughout the school regardless if they are master certified.

10. The State Sovereignty Project

Claims of state sovereignty and secession-rights were denied via the American Civil War, but this denial was never legally examined to determine its validity; rather, they were forced on the states solely through federal brute force. However, various experts have recently challenged such denial, claiming that the states are truly sovereign, and that such denial is therefore in breach of existing law. These experts include such reputable and accredited and educated professionals and professors such as Drs. Thomas DiLorenzo, Walter Williams, Thomas E. Woods and others.

If such experts are indeed correct, then this bears dire meaning for our State, with regard to its sovereignty -- as well as to our rights as Michigan citizens.

The State Sovereignty Project therefore seeks to petition the Michigan state legislature to draft a referendum-proposal in order to examine and verify this issue.

This proposal, if passed, will authorize an official state convention, to examine the political status of the State of Michigan according to valid law. This convention will convene a team of of objective and independent experts in the field of legal research, who will examine all relevant evidence regarding this matter.

From this evidence, this team and Convention will determine the actual meaning and impact of the laws and Constitution regarding the political status of the State of Michigan, in relation to the federal Union and government.

Subsequently, the People of the State of Michigan will then examine the Convention's findings, and determine appropriate action in response to such.
