1. Freedom of the press in India and Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal ban on news programme

Itanagar: The District Magistrate of Papum Pare district in Arunachal Pradesh banned the airing of news programme by ‘Aaj Ki Awaj’ by cable operators for allegedly violating rules.

The District Magistrate in exercise of his power conferred under section 19 of the Cable TV Act, 1995 prohibited all cable operators from transmitting or re-transmitting the news programme by ‘Aaj Ki Awaj’ with immediate effect, official sources said on Saturday. In an order, the District Magistrate said ‘Aaj Ki Awaj’ has been airing programme without registering with the authorities and alleged the programmes are defamatory and suggestive innuendoes and half truths.

‘Aaj Ki Awaj’ has been covering news from all over Arunachal Pradesh and providing them to cable operators for circulation daily for the past few years after Doordarshan station at Itanagar discontinued airing privately produced news programme. PTI

2. Family Court System Reform

In family court, decisions made by judges and commissioners who are trying to get thru as many court cases as possible are not necessarily in the best interest of all parties, but most importantly is the innocent children.

Often times these children are ripped away from fit and loving parents who are capable of providing for them and having relationships with them simply because other individuals, or agencies have not taken all dynamics into consideration.

Children deserve to have a voice and be heard. It would greatly improve the likelihood of children having more normal and stable lives if they were to have an advocate from the beginning of any court proceeding that could adversely affect their lives. This is especially important in cases of drug/alcohol use, abuse/neglect, mental health issues and/or abandonment.

No Child should have to be separated from a fit and loving parent capable of providing for them, but divorce is a reality and children are not a commodity that can be "split in half". Children deserve to have as much normalcy in their lives as possible and deserve to have someone advocate for them their wants and desires. Children should not be discounted simply because of their age or any challenges they may face (special needs children are often discounted because of their challenges)

Immediate appointment of a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) or Guardian Ad Litem, who could look at the facts from the standpoint of what is in the child(ren's) best interest, as well as their wants and desires (which is often a huge part of their best interest) without the bias of either party, would greatly help each child who is affected by court decisions.

It is well documented that children who has a situation of unstable family dynamics, often turn to a life of crime, drugs, alcohol, and/or risky sexually active lifestyles to replace what they are not getting at home.

Let's invest some time and money into our children now to keep them out of those lifestyles and keep our society a better place for us all.

Let's give OUR CHILDREN A VOICE.

4. Free Hao Wu

April 14, 2006

Hao Wu (Chinese name: 吴皓), a Chinese documentary filmmaker and blogger who lived in the U.S. between 1992 and 2004, was detained by the Beijing division of China's State Security Bureau on the afternoon of Wednesday, Febuary 22, 2006.

On that afternoon, Hao had met in Beijing with a congregation of a Christian church not recognized by the Chinese government, as part of the filming of his next documentary.

Hao had also been in phone contact with Gao Zhisheng, a lawyer specializing in human rights cases. Gao confirmed to one of Hao's friends that the two had been in phone contact and planned to meet on Feb. 22, but that their meeting never took place after Gao advised against it.

On Friday, Feb. 24, Hao's editing equipment and several videotapes were removed from the apartment where he had been staying. Hao has been in touch his family since Feb. 22, but judging from the tone of the conversations, he wasn't able to speak freely. One of Hao's friends has been interrogated twice since his detention. Beijing's Public Security Bureau (the police) has confirmed that Hao has been detained, but have declined to specify the charges against him.

The reason for Hao's detention is unknown. One of the possibilities is that the authorities who detained Hao want to use him and his video footage to prosecute members of China's underground Churches. Hao is an extremely principled individual, who his friends and family believe will resist such a plan. Therefore, we are very concerned about his mental and physical well-being.

As of April 14th, 2006, Hao has been held for 52 days without being charged with a crime, in clear violation of Chinese procedure. Numerous requests by Hao's family for information have been denied by the State Security Bureau.

Hao Wu's friends and colleagues at Global Voices Online - where Hao served as China editor - in cooperation with his sister Wu Na have organized a website, a letter writing campaign and this petition to ask the Chinese government for his immediate release.

More information about Hao Wu's detention is available at http://freehaowu.org (or a mirror site, http://ethanzuckerman.com/haowu)

5. Stop China From Harvesting Human Organs

April 8, 2006

This Petition is created for raising global awareness about a situtation which recently unfolded about a concentration camp in China wherein the prisoners are having their vital organs extracted while they are still living.

The victims are practitioners of the peaceful practice known as Falun Gong which emphasizes the cultivation of Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance.

Since 1999 under the communist regime, Falun Gong practitioners have been subjected to one of the most brutal persecutions in human history. The most recent revelation of this horrible atrocity is that of the Sujiatun death camp where the majority of the Organ Harvesting has taken place.

New information reveals that as many as 36 such camps exist specifically to eradicate Falun Gong practitioners by means of vital organ extraction and live cremation.

We call for the kindhearted people of the world to petition for an immediate cease of these vile crimes against innocent people.

6. Save Indian Cricket icon, Sourav Ganguly, from constant malicious tirades of Greg Chappell

We Indian cricket lovers are greatly shocked, flabbergasted and humiliated by the very recent sweeping, deliberate comments of Mr. Greg Chappell, the current Indian national Cricket team coach towards statistically the most Successful Indian cricket Captain , an illustrious international cricket icon , the BBCI A grade player --Mr.Sourav Ganguly.

The conscious interview given by Mr. Greg Chappell to Guardian of English media was without any provocation from any sector of Cricket or from the person on whom the comments were thrust upon.

We Indians experience this interview a deliberate ploy of Mr. Greg Chappell, where he wanted to malign profoundly the image of Mr.Sourav Ganguly in public.

We Indians just can't digest these continuous hatred and tirades from a non Indian like Greg Chappell toward a phenomenal Indian national cricket character.

We Indians are especially extremely annoyed and upset over Chappell's comments that the former Indian skipper wanted to cling on to captaincy because of financial reasons. For a person like Sourav Ganguly who grew up in a 22-bedroom mansion with 35 relatives and 24 cars, we Indians feel that allegation of continuing cricket for financial reason - is an affront of highest degree to him.

Sourav Ganguly being a national pride and International ambassador of the game, Cricket .we feel that our national image has been tarnished with this 'conscious' remark of Greg Chappell. It is needless to say that cricket, the game of etiquette, and its fraternity both have been humiliated as well with this malicious statement.

On behalf of --- Indian cricket lovers, former Indian cricket captain Mr.Sourav Ganguly, www.welovesourav.com and its fraternity, world cricket fraternity and finally countrymen we bring this very disturbing issue into the notice of Sports ministry of Govt. Of. India and Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) with a very strong demand that -

1. Govt. Of India should take an immediate action with an exemplary effect so that in future none can play around with and malign our country's prides and heroes from different walks of life.

2. BCCI must take necessary exemplary action with immediate effect against Greg Chappell for making such a baseless obnoxious comments towards a very reputed Indian cricketer like Sourav Ganguly.

3. Mr. Greg Chappell has to withdraw immediately his recent comments made at Guardian which we all feel fraught with personal vendetta towards Mr. Sourav Ganguly

4. Mr. Greg Chappell has to request Mr. Sourav Ganguly in public or media to forgive the former for his nefarious ploy.

8. Justice For Tharsini (University Campaign)

January 17, 2006

In December 2005, 20 year old Tharsini, a pre school teacher in the Sri Lankan army occupied Northern Tamil island of Pungudutivu, was gang raped and murdered, allegedly by members of the Sri Lankan Military; her body found in a well next to a Sri Lankan Military camp.

She was murdered in a government designated 'high security zone' where civilians live, which means that access in and out of the zone is tightly controlled by soldiers. The evidence of the Sri Lankan Military's involvement in the rape, murder and attempted cover up, is extensively documented in a report by the North Easter Secretariat for Human Rights (www.nesohr.org) whose founder member Jospeph Pararajasingham has since been shot allegedly by Sri Lankan military intelligence.

The Pungudituvu Cooperative Society has said in a press release that the Sri Lankan Navy should take responsibility for the murder and has appealed for international action to ensure that women in their island and in neightbouring areas can live without fear of violence from the occupying army. T

We, the undersigned join the students of the University of Jaffna in their concern and ask for action by the British government and the European Union, to ensure accountability and to prevent future sexual abuse of women in army occupied areas. As we draft this appeal a 16 year old school girl in another part of Jaffna was abducted on her way home from school by Sri Lankan soldiers. Your immediate preventive action is asked for.

Many of those who have appealed for justice for Tharsini so far have been intimidated and some shot by the Sri Lankan Army & Navy.

· When her body was found, residents protested against the Sri Lankan Navy. A 55 year old post man was shot by the Sri Lankan armed forces.

· The University of Jaffna, both its professors and students, then took up the protest. They too, including the Vice Chancellor, Professors and students were assaulted and shot by the Sri Lankan Army.

· Mr Gajendran, TNA Member of Parliament for Jaffna who joined the protest march for justice for Tharsini was injured by the Sri Lankan Army. The TNA party protested in Parliament. But on Christmas Eve, after the protest, the TNA's leading parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingham was also shot.

· Journalists who covered the protests were assaulted.

We the undersigned, who are students and alumni of British universities who live in Britain in safety, now join the Universtiy of Jaffna in expressing concern and take up this appeal for immediate and unequivocal action as outlined below.

10. Termination, Prosecution and Conviction of Responsible Individual(s) of Zania's Cruelty

October 31, 2005

Mauled dog faces death after being left untreated at Lebanon Animal Control Shelter.

Seeking termination, prosecution and conviction of Josh Greer and individual(s) responsible for animal cruelty and abuse of Zania.

Zania, a 4-year-old black Labrador retriever, was a playmate to a 4-year-old boy living in Mt. Juliet. She was picked up Friday, October 14, 2005, for running loose and placed in the Lebanon Animal Control facility because Mt. Juliet has no facility of its own. Zania was placed in a pen on Saturday with three other dogs, who for several hours, continuously attacked her until she was found lying in a pool of blood Sunday afternoon.

Zania was removed from the pen, hosed off (to wash off all the blood), and left outside on the concrete floor. She lay on the cold (50 degrees), wet concrete until an anonymous phone call was made to the Director of the Humane Association of Wilson County, a nonprofit, private agency with no ties to Lebanon Animal Control.

The dog was lying apparently lifeless on the concrete floor inside a chain link fenced enclosure when the Director arrived. She discovered the dog was still alive and called the Police Department, who came with an animal control officer 30 minutes later. After another 30 minute delay, they took the dog to the Lebanon Animal Hospital. The Director confirmed with the animal control officer that Zania was a healthy dog when she was picked up. The animal control officers also confirmed they were aware Zania had been injured earlier by the other dogs, but had made the decision to let her recover on her own.

Dr. Craig, the attending veterinarian, verified Zania was in shock, had a subnormal temperature, blood loss and would not have survived over night if she had been left untreated at the animal control facility. Details of his report and pictures of Zania can be seen at:
http://www.oilydog.org/lab.htm. There is also another article at:
http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051020/NEWS01/510200410/1192/COUNTY.

When the story first came to light, Zania was facing leg amputation. Now, she is facing death because of the cruelty inflicted by Josh Greer.

According to Tennessee Code, Title 39 Criminal Offenses, Chapter 14 Offenses Against Property Part 2-Animals, under Section 39-14-202, Cruelty to animals:
(2) Fails unreasonably to provide necessary food, water, care or shelter for an animal in the person's custody;
(3) Abandons unreasonably an animal in the person's custody; and
(4) Transports or confines an animal in a cruel manner can be found committing an offense under this section and is a Class A misdemeanor.

In addition, 39-14-212 Aggravated cruelty to animals - (a) A person commits aggravated cruelty to animals when, with aggravated cruelty and with no justifiable purpose, such person intentionally kills or intentionally causes serious physical injury to a companion animal. Under this section, as of June, 2004, offenses carry felony level penalties. We believe these codes have been violated.

It is not acceptable or humane to place dogs with unknown histories in cages together especially with breeds known for fighting. Zania was denied shelter with no protection from the elements as she lay dying, compassion in her handling while in Josh Greer's and other animal control officers care, protection when she was locked and confined in a pen with a breed of animals known to fight with no means of escape or protection, and immediate vet care as she lay in critical condition. She was confined and abandoned in a cruel manner that now threatens her life.

Zania has suffered enough. Our prayers and thoughts are with Zania and her family. We respectfully ask that you act on behalf of Zania and other animals who have found themselves in similar situations to put a stop to the cruelty and abuse that exists at Lebanon Animal Control. Josh Greer and those individual(s) responsible for Zania's cruelty and abuse must be terminated. No justifiable purpose can be found in the reckless, cruel, and abusive manner in which the animal conrol officers behaved in the care, handling and decision making for Zania. We therefore petition that they be prosecuted and convicted to the fullest extent of the law.

On behalf of Zania and all animals, we thank you.

11. Release Akbar Ganji

This is a call on Tony Blair, the British Prime Minister, to demand release of Akbar Ganji.

To: Mr Tony Blair, The British Prime Minister

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the condition of Mr. Akbar Ganji, the Iranian investigative journalist and a prominent advocate of human rights and civil society who has been in prison for the past five years. Mr. Ganji was arrested on April 22, 2000 following his participation in an academic and cultural conference held at the Heinrich Böll Institute in Berlin, April 7-9, 2000. He was sentenced on January 13, 2001 to 10 years' imprisonment plus five years' internal exile.

On May 15, 2001 an appellate court reduced Ganji's sentence on appeal to six months' imprisonment and overturned his sentence of five years in exile. The Supreme Court, however, overturned the appellate court's decision and referred the case to a different appeals court. On July 16, 2001 Ganji was again sentenced to six years in prison on charges of collecting confidential information that harms national security and spreading propaganda against the Islamic regime by attending the Berlin conference.

As Ms. Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel Laureate and Mr. Ganji's attorney, reported Ganji started a hunger strike on May 19, 2005 and ended on May 25th in order to give the opportunity to authorities to respond to his concerns. Mr. Ganji has suffered from asthma for a few years and now shows serious symptoms of illness such as severe coughing. Mr. Ganji's illness is not responding to his old medications and he needs to be re-examined in short order. Ms. Ebadi has asked Judicial authorities several times, on his behalf, to allow him to be seen and treated by outside physicians, but unfortunately these requests have been all rejected. His health is now deteriorating and his return to another hunger strike that is reported by his wife will further jeopardize his life.

We express our astonishment that a person, who has served his country, has devoted his life to the improvement of civil society and has come to be known as one of the most vocal and respected journalists of his time should be treated in this way. Mr. Ganji is an honorable member of the PEN Canada and continues his work and writing even from inside the prison wards. It appears that major reason for keeping Ganji in prison might be due to a series of articles he had written as an investigative journalist implicating leading Iranian political figures in the 1998 murders of several dissidents and intellectuals.

We believe that Mr. Ganji is held in violation of his right to freedom of expression, as guaranteed by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Constitution of the Islamic Republic.

We are very disturbed by the health and prison conditions of Mr. Ganji. We demand that Akbar Ganji be released immediately and unconditionally and charges against him dropped. In addition we urge you to ensure that he receives immediate and proper medical treatment while his release is being processed.

15. Help 'Abed al-Rahman al-Ahmar, human rights activist

I am a member of Amnesty International, the non-governmental organization that has been campaigning worldwide in defence of human rights since 1961.

I am writing on the case of Mr. 'Abed al-Rahman al-Ahmar, a human rights activist arrested in Bethlehem last November 22, 2002 and placed in administrative detention for six months as of December 3 on charges of being "a danger to the security of the area". He is currently detained at the 'Ofer Detention Centre.

I believe 'Abed al-Rahman al-Ahmar has never used or promoted the use of violence and that he has been detained solely because of his commitment in favour of human rights. For this reason I respectfully urge you to order his immediate and unconditional release and to make sure he has access to the necessary medical assistance in the meantime.

While thanking you for your attention, I remain.

Sincerely yours,

16. Change U.S. Policy to Save North Korean Refugee Children in China

This Petition was started to lobby for the change of prohibitive U.S. Policy that makes it virtually impossible for North Korean refugees, in particular the young orphaned children, who are currently living in fear and hiding in China, to seek asylum and resettlement in the U.S. Countless thousands of these young children live on the streets under the constant threat of hunger, exploitation, abuse, arrest and repatriation. Recent crackdowns by the Chinese, who treat these refugees as illegal aliens, have worsened the situation, and immediate action is critical to saving these fragile lives.
