1. Give Adults a Choice: Stop the Seat Belt Law

There are 31 states that don't require Helmets when riding a motorcycle but we are forced to wear a seat belt when driving a car.

The numbers show that when wearing a seat belt you have a 30% of not getting injured and a 50% of not getting killed and when not wearing a helmet you have a 50% chance of getting a fatal injury to the head.

Children and drivers 21 and younger should wear a seat belt but over 21 should have a choice just like motorcycle drivers have a choice to wear a helmet.

2. Allow another colour for private hire drivers

A row about rules which mean Dudley borough private hire cars must be painted white came to a head at a meeting of the authority's taxi's committee last month.

Councillors threw out an application for a relaxation of the rules from the Dudley Private Hire and Taxi Association, who argue white has become a popular colour for car buyers which has increased demand and pushed up prices.

The Dudley Private Hire and Taxi Association, which has around 600 members, says white cars can cost up to £2,000 more than similar vehicles in other colours.

3. A petiton to commend the actions of officers in April 21st Kings Cross Shooting

This petition is to commend the actions taken by the NSW Police Officers when juvenile delinquents posed a serious risk to public safety.

Around 4am on Saturday the 21st of April 2012 a NSW Police Officer shot two juvenile suspects in Kings Cross in a stolen car that mounted the sidewalk and struck two pedestrians. One of the police officers deployed his firearm to stop the car. The 14 year old driver was hit once in the chest and once in the arm, and the passenger was struck in the neck. The car also had 5 other passengers.

The media has since portrayed the incident as a racial hate crime due to the aboriginal ethnicity of the driver and passengers.

This petition is a direct retaliation to the petition criticizing the ‘brutal’ reaction by police. The matter still remains that the driver was unlicensed, driving a stolen, overloaded car and a serious threat to public safety. Pedestrians were jumping for their lives after the car mounted the curb, police attempted to stop the offending care without force but to no success. The driver deliberately disobeyed police instruction to stop, running over an officer’s foot before hitting two female pedestrians. One of these pedestrians was trapped under the car.

This is not a racial hate crime. The actions of police had no weighting on the ethnicity of the boys. A crime was committed and due force was used. It should not be expect that aboriginal youths receive favorable treatment in the eyes of the law. It is also unreasonable to argue police could have shot out the cars tires instead. Not only is this against police training, but it isn’t a guarantee of stopping the car. It is also noted the pedestrian struck was trapped under the same car. Out of anyone involved, this female pedestrian was the only innocent victim.

As a law abiding citizen I believe the driver and his passengers committed a serious criminal offence, posed a serious hazard to public safety and upon failing to stop when initially directed, waived their rights to police favor. The police officers involved used necessary force to subdue and detain those responsible and had a responsibility to the general population to ensure public safety.

The police officers actions were in the best intentions of the public and his job and career should not be compromised because of it.

4. Petition Against Video Surveillance in Transportation Vehicles at Riverside Industries Inc.

Recent events have prompted the inquisition into a surveillance system for Riverside transportation vehicles. These cameras will give non-objective personnel the ability to observe every action of every person in extreme detail while using a Riverside vehicle.

While it is being argued that the installation of this technology is for the benefit and well-being of Riverside employees and consumers, the fact still remains that equal or greater harm can also manifest. The human condition has sometimes been agreed to include the idea that: humans make and learn from their mistakes on a consistent basis . With this in mind, it would be an frivolous to place the actions of anyone under video scrutiny in every situation.

Therefore, while the best intentions may be advocated by adding video recording devices to a vehicle, it simply isn't plausible to expect that anyone; be they driver, monitor or consumer will meet everyone's expectations all the time. Trusting in each other is the time-tested and [arguably the] best way to resolve conflict or dissent in any environment. Dissecting every action in every situation and after-the-fact is not a reliable means of security for anyone.

Some other reasons why surveillance cameras should NOT be installed include (but are not limited to): privacy, cost, mistrust, misinterpretations, increased stress, employee / employer dissent, peer contention and misconduct.

5. Reforms In Intermediate Public Transport (Auto Rickshaws)

Dear Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. Shiela Dikshit, Hon’ble Minister of Transport, Shri Arvinder Singh Lovely and transport commissioner Shri R K Verma

With regard to the problems commuters face with auto rickshaw drivers (ARD), such as overcharging and unruly behaviour, we wish to bring your attention to the following facts.

Out of the two types of autorickshaw drivers, 80 per cent are renter-drivers, renting autos from contractors who own multiple vehicles. They pay Rs 250-300 for 10-12 hours and earn the same amount in profit: half their daily taking goes on rent and CNG. Owner-drivers own their machines, although “owner” is misleading as most are repaying huge loans to auto-financiers from whom they purchased the rickshaw and the required permit. Monthly payments are Rs 9,000-15,000.

Two decisions have strengthened the auto-financiers’ hands. In 1997, the Supreme Court capped the number of autos, trying to cut emissions. No new auto-permits would be issued; nor could they be sold. Delhi’s size and population grew, but the number of autos did not. Consequently, the permit price rocketed and a black market emerged. Only auto-financiers won; their existing stock of auto-permits appreciated. In the late ’90s, a new rickshaw with permit cost just over a lakh. Today, after a decade of black-market inflation, the same package costs Rs 4-4.5 lakh: Rs 1.45 lakh for the auto, Rs 3 lakh for the permit. Meanwhile, demand for rented autos rose with new migrants, but supply froze, allowing contractors to hike rents.

Then, in 1998, the Supreme Court ordered public transport vehicles to convert to CNG by 2002. Owner-drivers had to pay Rs 30,000 each. In 2000, Delhi had 83,000 autorickshaws. In 2002, there were 55,000. The average owner-driver could not afford it; thousands had to sell their autos and valid permits cheaply to financiers. Others had their permits voided and were left unable to legally drive their autorickshaws: selling them to a financier was the only option. By cancelling and hoarding permits, financiers and the Transport Department managed to get rid of over a third of Delhi’s autos, sending permit prices spiralling.

Financiers now hold most of Delhi’s auto-permits — but in the names of the original owners (not the financiers), who sold their vehicles years ago. When a driver pays Rs 4-4.5 lakh for the auto-permit package, the permit will be transferred in his name only when the loan is repaid. Until then he drives “illegally”. Renter-drivers have the same problem: the auto-permit is in the contractor’s name, or a false name to cover the contractor’s activities.

Other methods exist to retain control. The financier will make the driver — frequently a new migrant to Delhi — sign several blank loan contracts. This gives him power to raise interest rates and deny the driver ownership even when the loan is fully repaid. It also allows him to charge extortionate “penalty charges”. Many of Delhi’s owner-drivers have been repaying loans for many years due to compound interest and “late payment penalties” of up to Rs 30,000. The contract maximises the financier’s ability to repossess the autorickshaw. Once snatched back, it can be sold to the next driver. Many vehicles have been “sold” and repossessed five or six times.

The over-regulatory regime demands Auto-drivers to carry around 16 documents with them at all times, “available” from the transport department on application. However, each application requires an absurdly long list of supporting documents: a 50-year-old Bihari driver may be asked for his old school certificates and Delhi ID and ration cards. Impossible requirements, of course, lead to bribes being offered.
Is it surprising, then, that in this distorted market, auto-drivers can’t rely on the meter? Somehow, in the midst of all these repayments, rents, bribes and challans, the autowallahs must feed their families.

Yet auto rickshaws are a vital part of Delhi’s infrastructure: they are efficient, affordable, economical, environmentally friendly — and iconic. They cannot be scrapped. Instead, the whole auto rickshaw sector must be reformed, starting with the issuance of new permits. To become a “world-class city” Delhi needs a bigger, better fleet of intermediate public transport vehicles that provide convenient public transport to residents respecting right to livelihood of the drivers.

The apex court-appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority in January this year cited the freeze ordered by the apex court on the number of autos at 55,000 in the city as the main reason for the financier mafia selling autos at an escalated cost.

6. Review Student Safety Policies

Recently my 8 year old daughter who was supposed to stay in an afterschool childcare program, was accidentally put on the school bus to ride home. Upon arriving home to an empty house, her bus driver let her off of the bus and left her untill 5:30 in the afternoon. The transportation department claims that they are only responcible for preschoolers and kindtergardeners. I as a parent am outraged at the fact that is is ok for our school system who are responcible for our children, to just be allowed to drop elementary aged school children off regaurdless of age or supervision.

7. Get unsafe senior drivers off the road

Many families often have parents who are in their 70+ age range, and are still on the road. Family members observe their parents making unsafe driving decisions, or simple mixups with the basic concepts of driving...

It's that if a senior driver was dangerous on the road somebody would tell them, but thats not always the case. Out of respect and love, it's difficult to personally take away a parents means of independence.

This problem would be fixed in Minnesota, by taking another road test when adults reach their 70+age. Simple enough, if you cant pass, you shouldn't be on the road. After their first test at 70, they will retake it every three years, until they give up the keys.

9. No to Drink Driving in Australia

Stop drink driving before someone you love is killed.

My son Liam (15 y) was killed by a drunk driver on the 5-1-2008 at 2:30am. The penalties for drink driving are too soft, they look after the drunk driver and not the murdered.

The driver that murdered Liam will most likely get less than 12 months jail for what he did. The law for drink driving needs to be so hard that no-one dares to do it.

The drivers cry only when they are caught and Innocent people who bury their loved ones cry forever.

So why does this death and destruction keep happening?
WHY IS THE MESSAGE NOT GETTING THROUGH?

It keeps happening because we have all been brainwashed to believe that there ‘isn’t anymore that can be done” and that ‘these things happen’ and that ‘the poor driver didn’t mean it’

It keeps happening because the message that is sent to the public when yet another poor innocent soul is horrifically killed is that their life isn’t even worth removing the driver who caused their death from the roads.

Drivers are rarely arrested and bailed and it is even rarer for them to be kept in custody. The message sent is that to die on the roads is unavoidable and acceptable.

The message sent is that it must have been an accident so therefore the driver shouldn’t be immediately penalized, even though the driver was drunk/drugged and/or speeding. Even though the law says it is a crime to behave this way, the driver doesn’t always receive the same legal action that another person who had committed manslaughter would.

This has to change for the correct message to be heard to prevent road trauma. If it continues as it is now nothing will change.

Allowing drivers to stay on the road supports the myth that deaths on the road are unavoidable and not the culpable drivers fault.

We have to demand that drivers who risk our lives are removed from the road and these drivers must receive the message loud and clear that their conduct will not be tolerated.

The message that is sent to drivers who break the road laws is that it is a minor matter and as long as a fine is paid drivers can go on their merry way. The game is not to get caught

MAYBE THE MESSAGE IS GETTING THROUGH

BUT IT IS THE WRONG MESSAGE

The pain of losing my son at such a young age is the worst pain I have ever experienced, having chronic pain since a car accident 25 years ago is nothing compared to the loss.

Please sign and save a life, Thanks,

Liam's Family

Update,
Liam was staying at a friends place on Friday night, we don't know how or why Liam came to be in the car that night. How can a 15 and a 12 year old tell how drunk a driver is? The driver is 23 years old and still driving around like nothing has happen. The police have told us that the driver was doing over 100kph in a 50kph zone, had been doing burn outs in the main street of town less that 2 minutes before the crash. Her is some of a newspaper report or the crash--A 15-YEAR-OLD boy is the state's first road death for the year after the car he was travelling in crashed into a power pole early yesterday at Railton. The driver and another boy both suffered major injuries. Emergency service workers were called to the smash, in Ennis Ave, shortly before 2am. It is believed a sedan driven on Crockers Rd and Ennis Ave by a 23-year-old Railton man Brenton John Redshaw got out of control. The car slid 44m on the front passenger side into a power pole, snapping the pole at its base and cutting power to some residents.
The pole embedded about halfway into the car.
The 15-year-old was trapped a considerable time and died at the scene from his injuries.

Liam's killer plead not guilty to all charges--
1 count of Causing grievous bodily harm
1 count of Drive under the influence of intoxicating liquor.
1 count of Drive a motor vehicle while exceeding prescribed alcohol limit
1 count of Operate vehicle in public place in an exhibition of speed, acceleration or loss of traction.
1 count of Exceed speed limit in a built up area.
1 count of Manslaughter

UPDATE: Dec 11, 2008
He pleads guilty and gets 10 months read the judges comments at http://www.supremecourt.tas.gov.au/cops/redshaw_b_j

12. Change the method of bidding for work assignments

Petition Background:

For years CAW Local 114 has been using proxy bidding for work assingments daily. This format of assignment bidding has employees changing start times almost daily, which has effected their life style and home life, due to the fact that they are unable to plan for anything beyond one day. Furthermore, the constant shift changing effects their health and well being.

Recently the Canadian Governmet has changed the rules for Commerical Driver's Hours of Service, which is greatly effecting a driver's ability to bid and hold an assignment, and they are being forced onto an assignment and time that they do not want or desire.

13. UK Drivers Eye Test Requirement

It is currently a requirement that before taking the practical driving exam in the UK that the student be subjected to an 'eye exam' which is made up purely of reading a number plate at a distance of 20 to 20.5 metres.

If, after 3 attempts, the student fails to read the number plate correctly, they will have failed the driving test.

This method of testing vision is extremely flawed. Weather conditions such as rain, fog and glare from the sun can contribute to anyone having difficulty reading the number plate. In addition, as many number plates are affixed to vehicles with bolts that go through the centre of the plate. This can alter the appearance of the letters and numbers, for example, making a 0 appear to be an 8.

It is vital that a driver have very good vision, however, this should be confirmed at the commencement of driving instruction and not delayed until the time of the practical driving exam. Further to this, just as the driving exam is left to the professional driving examiners, the eye exam should be conducted by an eye care professional.

We therefore propose that applicants seeking a provisional driving license must submit a document from a licensed optician verifying the results of their eye examination, along with the other required documentation.

This would ensure a) learner drivers have met the same vision requirement as all licensed drivers, b) the eye examination is carried out by a licensed optician in a controlled environment which is equal and fair to everyone, c) that no one loses their entire practical driving test fee purely on the basis of failing the eye exam.

This added further to the pain and suffering of the victim's heartbroken family. No thought was given to the victim's family, nor did the offender reveal the history of the plates to the unsuspecting buyer.

17. Buckle up the children!

March 14, 2006

How many of you know someone who has lost a baby or child in a vehicle accident because they were not buckled up in a car seat or with a safety belt? How many people do you know that allow their kids to stand in the car?

How many of you have SEEN what it looks like when a child has gone through a windscreen, if you have - you know you never want to ever again! Let's give children the right to live a whole life..

People have got so accustomed to the luxury of driving their (safe) cars, that they have become less aware of their own safety by driving continuously faster & more recklessly. They might be able to afford a speeding or reckless driving fines but what none of us can afford is the huge loss of childrens' lives which have occurred over many years. Children are allowed to stand on the back seat (sometimes even on the front seat!), they are not harnassed in in any way - should the driver have to apply brakes - which happens all the times - the child will either go through the windscreen & be killed or be very seriously injured / killed in the vehicle itself.

Please read this and forward it on, YOU could save a child's life TODAY!

18. Help introduce a new charge of 'Driving Without Due Care Causing Death'

January 17, 2006

Lee (pictured), was killed instantly from multiple injuries when a driver failed to give way at traffic lights colliding with him head on. Lee was riding through a green light on his motorbike. The driver exercised his full rights, declined a police interview and was not asked to submit to a blood test. Lee, his victim, had no rights, infact his name was not even mentioned in the charge.

We are calling for an urgent overhaul of the motoring offences system, with tougher sentences and higher fines.

The current law of driving 'without due care' is a very good reflection of how unimportant road traffic death is considered. At present drivers are charged more often with careless driving, over dangerous driving, as it is easier to obtain a conviction.

'Scandalous'
The current penalties incurred by drivers involved in a major crash which is a clear-cut case of negligence do not reflect the enormity of the offence.

We want the victim to be the central issue of the charge. The current system fails to acknowledge the senseless loss of life or the trauma suffered by the victim's families. When making the decision to sign this petition please put yourself in the position of the victim's family. What would you consider justice?

20. Just Say No to Child Endangerment

We, the undersigned, are asking for help to get our bus driver, Mr. Spells, terminated so we can feel safer about riding the bus.

Not only does Mr. Spells make rude comments, but he also drives carelessly. He endangers the lives of every student on the bus, himself, and the lives of innocent drivers that share the road with him. Mr. Spells swerves all over the road, does not watch where he is going, and has even hit two street signs that are at least three feet off the side of the road.

Is it safe to talk on a cell phone while driving a school bus full of thirty or more kids? I don't think so. But obviously Mr. Spells does because he loves to carry on conversations while the bus is in motion. There is a sticker in the front of the bus that says "no idling - save fuel and breathe easier" but Mr. Spells frequently stops the bus, gets out and goes outside to talk on his phone. He is not only wasting diesel but is giving students the oppurtunity to misbehave. Mr. Spells even has the audacity to make racial comments agaist Hispanics, calling them "brown skins". It is also a state law for anyone to wear a seat belt while operating a motor vehicle. Mr. Spells drives the bus without his seatbelt often.

When we, the students, confront the assistant principal [Mr. Stacy Poston] about these incidents, the only thing he had to say was: "Mr. Spells has been driving for many years, he is one of our best drivers. Would you like us to put you on a bus that has had ten or twenty wrecks?" First of all, why should any bus driver be driving if they have had that many wrecks? It's unsafe. Second, Mr. Spells should keep his glasses on at all times, but instead he will take two minutes every day to take them off and clean them while he is driving. How is he supposed to see? We just hope he knows what he is doing.

This is why we are asking for your help to accomplish the only goal we have: To make our rides to and from school safer with a new bus driver. We are not trying to cause chaos, we are just concerned about the safety of the students and other drivers. This is why we believe Mr. Spells should not drive anymore, for fear of our lives and those of others. Thank you for taking the time to read this petition and we hope you agree with our views.

21. Stop people getting away with murder behind the wheel

We lost our 12 year old daughter Hayley in a car crash on 16th March 2003. Hayley was a passenger in a vehicle and was on her way home when the accident happened. It seems that a blue peugeot 406 was driving erratically at around 80mph up the centre of the road overtaking and undertaking traffic causing it to swerve and brake heavily.

The vehicle Hayley was in was forced to brake and went into a skid which threw them into oncoming traffic and fatally injuring her and seriously injuring 5 other people.

The peugeot having seen what had happened and avoiding being involved in the collision itself stopped some 100 ft away from the site of the crash and then drove off at speed. This vehicle has not yet been traced. The law allowed us one police officer to carry out investigations into the accident and to find the driver of the peugeot.

This is ridiculous as there were over 100 statements taken which took one officer months to complete. Had my daughter been killed on the street rather than in a car there would have been a whole team of detectives working on her death and finding her killer.

If this driver is found they will be charged with causing death by dangerous driving which carries a maximum of 14 years in prison but is usually dropped to a careless driving charge whereby the death of a person is not even taken into account and the sentence is usually just a fine and sometimes a driving ban of upto 3 years.

The law needs changing to ensure that the death of a person killed by dangerous driving is taken into account and treated as manslaughter when neccessary.

It is now 3 years since Hayley died and her killer is still out there free to kill again. We haven't heard a thing from the police in over 12 months which basically means that they have no further evidence to suggest who the guilty party is. If anyone knows a thing please get in touch with us or the police.

22. Removal Of Bus Driver "Arletha Appea"

For the last month Arletha Appea, has been the bus driver for the 79X (5:20pm bus Jefferson Rd. & Smith Rd.) Leaving from Parsippany arriving to Newark.

Arletha is reckless with her driving and we the passengers are requesting that NJ Transit please remove Arletha Appea from this route.

She then asked the kids still on bus what was going on and they told her and she made no attempt to correct her mistake by returning to the bus stop and picking up the child. 25. Help Our Neighborhood

Fullerton Drive, Clearwater Drive, Harbor Drive, and Sedalia Drive in Columbus, Ohio, has had a long history of speeding vehicles at all times of the day and night. This is a residential street with many pedestrians. Children use this street as their main paths to the neighborhood Elementary and Middle Schools.

Too many speeding driver's cruse up and down our streets like they are race car driver's in the Indy 500. On July 29, 2003, a person in a stolen car plowed through 4 yards, knocking down trees, trash cans, bricks, and coming within a few feet of a resident's car and porch. A number of neighbor's cars have been struck, and damaged due to such driving. What about the children of the neighborhood, are they to be hit next?

There are a couple of other concerns our neighborhood has. One concern is that our street lights are not properly working, and some haven't been on in months. Property has been coming up missing from people's yards, and cars.

We, the residents of Blacklick Estates, would like to see something done to stop these problems that have been occurring in our neighborhood.

26. Replace the Driver of Bus #29

We the students of PHS Bus Route #29 seek the help of the administration to relieve or replace the bus driver, Teresa. We feel that Teresa is unfit to drive our bus. Those on this list agree that the removal of, or replacement of Terasa for a new bus driver is necessary. We all agree to individual interview by the administration to prove our position on this statement.

27. Age Limit on Driver's Licenses in the USA

It is our belief that peolple in America should not be allowed to drive when their age exceeds that of the average life expectancy age. More and more accidents happen each day because people on our roads are driving when they shouldn't have licenses. There's a minimum age. Why not a maximum age? Enough Signatures should warrant some action by our Congressional Representatives.

28. Release Joyce Bell from employment with Dare County Schools as Manteo Highschool Bus Driver

We the students of Manteo High School, hereby request the removal of Joyce Bell from the Manteo High School Bus Driver Position. All of the undersigned students feel that our Constitutional and Civil Rights are being violated, as well as the safety guidlines that all bus drivers must follow in transporting each of us to and from school each day.

We are being denied fair and humane treatment while riding to and from school on her bus #48 as required by state law. Students are being sworn at, yelled at, she will jam on the breaks of the bus to get the attention of students, which has already caused significant harm and injuries to a few of the students that are daily passengers.

She uses extreme profanity with the students, especially the boys, in a sexually harassing way. We the students of Manteo High School deserve a safe and pleasant ride to and from school each day without fear, and without feeling verbally abused during our daily rides. We are continuously late in getting home to our families because she will pull off onto the side of the road, (does not matter where)which sometimes puts us all in danger of being hit by another vehicle. She has gotton angry with some students and has made them get off the bus to walk home. From Manteo to the beach is a long haul, and we do not appreciate her treating us this way.

Our parents pay towns, and county taxes in order to provide money to pay the salaries of the bus driver's as well as several school officials at the Board's level on down to the custodians. We all are under the age of Eighteen, and feel that our complaints as well as our parents complaints are falling on deaf ears.

This petition is to serve as documentation of our treatment by this woman, and to open the school boards eyes and ears. We want action taken now! Before anyone else's rights are violated,or we get into an accident or worse, this woman needs to be removed and released from her position.

Respectfully Yours,
The Students of Manteo High School Bus #48
