1. Support the Year of Mental Health Awareness 2015

The Year of Mental Health Awareness will be a National initiative to raise awareness of mental health in our community, raise funds for mental health organisations in Australia and eradicate the negative stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness.

Mental health affects everyone! It is important mental health and mental illness is no longer a topic surrounded by a negative stigma and a taboo to speak about.

The year of mental health awareness will be the year to bring mental health out of the shadows and a topic of general discussion. We will raise awareness and funds for support services and research into various mental health facets, from learning difficulties, depression to dementia.

2. Speak Up! Speak Out! To Stop Sexual Abuse

Sharon R. Wells is a survivor of child sexual abuse. At age 14 she could no longer suppress the traumatic secrets of being abused. She felt alone, abandoned, damaged, guilty and responsible. The guilt and shame impacted her life in a very negative way. The deep embedded scars of abuse carried over into her adult life, causing much pain and suffering. Had resources been available for teens during that time, there is a great chance that she may not have experienced such life-long suffering. Sharon's story is just one of many who continue to suffer in silence because of sexual abuse.

There is an estimate of 60 million sexual abuse survivors that live amongst us in the United States of America. Because sexual abuse leaves victims feeling ashamed and guilty, most victims never tell. The secret torments them and causes life long suffering. Research has shown that the population of teenage abuse victims have been known to take their own lives, engage in drug and alcohol abuse, experience depression, rage, post-traumatic stress disorder amongst many others. If the trauma is not treated, some victims are doomed to repeat the cycle of sexual abuse.

The only way that we can save our future generations is by educating and empowering them to speak up and out. We must provide resources and support that will encourage them to break their silence and seek help and be aware of their surroundings.

4. People with mental illness should not have to die early

People with severe mental illness (SMI) can, on average, die up to 25 years earlier than the rest of the community.

MIFA wants to expose and highlight the national neglect which is causing people with SMI to experience poor physical health during their life and to die early.

*Diabetes occurs in about 15% of people with schizophrenia. This is three times higher than that of the general population.

*31% of people with schizophrenia and coronary heart disease (CHD) are diagnosed under the age of 55, compared with 18% of others with CHD;

*21% of people with schizophrenia who have a stroke are under 55, compared with 11% of others who have a stroke.

*After five years, 28% of people with respiratory disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder who also have schizophrenia have died, compared with 15% of people with no serious mental health problems.

5. Young Voices Unsilenced

The young voices have been silent too long and that has taken a toll on our bodies, we need change in the media industry. No longer is "healthy" considered beautiful, instead it's who's the most muscular or thin.

The number of teens with eating disorders and suicidal thoughts or action are rapidly rising because of depression that comes from not being "perfect."

7. Demand NICE Remove Stakeholder Only Mental Health Service Users In Consultation Processes

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) consults on new draft quality standards and guidance on service user experience in mental health and patient experience in NHS services and has launched a new consultation.

HOWEVER an interested party has discovered that the only people able to contribute are 'Registered Stakeholders'. and finding out who these are, and being able to get your views represented is a process which guarantees little, if any success.

Some may not wish to provide personal stories to Registered Stakeholders (strangers), and there is no other facility to have YOUR important views heard.

This means the results cannot be fully representative of the Service User Community as a whole and we would call on NICE to consider changing the process by which they determine and gather the evidence they use in their guidelines.

This is especially important during this traumatic period of changes to the NHS, cuts in Mental Health Service budgets and an increase in cases of mental illness.

8. Save the animals and the people!

Picture a beautiful, relaxing wildife habitat which provides a home for millions of animals and birds. Imagine that the same place hosts hundreds of oxygen-producing trees. Imagine that the place also provides a home and livelihood for at least a few farmers and other workers.

Now imagine bulldozers hurtling in and ripping up the trees, running over innocent animals and maybe even injuring one or two children. This is what almost certainly will happen and the Council want to call the new town "Cranbrook". They say that this for "economical reasons". But the fact is that it will do far more bad than good as the farmers will lose their livelihoods.

If any lower individual wanted to do this, they would be prosecuted by law, but the council are not in trouble for this. Why? Because they talk in posh language, they are high in power and may claim that they are "using resourceful land to build a new community for economical purposes" rather than saying that they are tearing down trees and destroying beautiful fields to build busy highways, shops, houses and leisure centres for their own evil money.

They say that it will provide employment, but this can sometimes be achieved by fixing and reusing old buildings. They also say that it will create more homes and prevent homelessness. The right way to prevent homelessness would be to fix and reuse old homes, lower household costs and fund homeless charities such as Shelter and the Salvation Army.

How would YOU like to lose your home and/or livelihood?

9. Better access to GPs who specialise in mental health care

From November 1, the Government will limit the number of Medicare rebates patients can claim when they consult a general practitioner who specialises in mental health care.

The 'Better Access' program has been providing patients with up to 18 consultations, but from November 1 this will be limited to 10 consultations for common but disabling problems such as depression and anxiety disorders.

GPs who specialize in mental health care offer easily accessible, affordable help. They can prescribe appropriate medications and offer a range of counselling options for individuals and families.

11. Wreckless Behavior Hurts - Remove "Skins" from Network

In a fragile yet technologically driven society where severe independence and emotions rule the "nation" of our youth's culture; it becomes clear and evident that unconditional love, responsibility and accountability must be the heartbeat of the adult world.

The influence of media with our youth is increasing by the day luring them into a fallible world where the abnormal becomes normal. Sex, drugs, alcohol, and bullying have become the order of the day. From the National Institute on Media & Family to the A.C. Nielson Company, a global marketing research firm, statistics have repeatedly shown us that our youth are being affected and infected by what they see and hear.

I am petitioning for the removal of "Skins" a premiering TV series on the MTV network. The show glorifies wreckless behavior through the repeated display of teens enjoying sex, drugs, alcohol and other activities. MTV's own summary admits, "Skins is a wild ride through the lives of a group of high school friends stumbling through the mine field of adolescence... and stepping on most of the mines as they go".

TV shows have the right to address social issues but not without proper scales and balances. The compass of life truths through family and community values are necessary to help this generation cautiously navigate through life.

How much farther can media contribute to the self-destruction of our future America?

An accolade from a youth in the success of such a show is not a true sign of success. Must we forget that they can only speak from the level of maturity and perception of the world according to where they are?

They are in need of us; our discipline, our love and identification and we are failing them.

12. Support Bipolar Sleep Research

We who have Bipolar Disorder suffer sleep deprivation almost nightly. And it often triggers or exacerbates the more obviously dangerous symptoms of the disorder.

For example, anger, impulsiveness, mixed manic episodes, depression, and manic risk-taking; all of which can result in destructive, painful, and even suicidal behavior. Yet, in our treatment, sleep deprivation is poorly addressed and frequently dismissed.

Getting a good night's sleep vastly improves our experience of bipolar and transforms our quality of life. But it rarely happens.

Therefore, we request that NIMH increase its research in this area.

13. Request to G20 for regulating the financial markets

Credit ratings are normally assigned by private Agencies on demand of the issuers. However, when the issuers and investors are very Big (for instance States) the rating Agencies play a role too big for their capacity to remain impartial. The values of such ratings has been widely questioned after the 2008 financial crisis.

Let’s read a few rows in Wikipedia : if an Agency cuts the rating of bonds issued by a State indebted on long term, this gives rise on short term to an increase of the interest applied to the bonds, that is an increase of the State financial burden. The issuer might be compelled to sell off his real estates or goods to reduce declassifying .

This is just what we saw in the last days of April 2010. After an exhausting negotiation, the Euro Countries went (April 26) on approval, together with the IMF, of a credit to Greece amounting to 45 billion Euro per year (110 billions over 3 years) at acceptable interest, in connection with an adequate commitment of the Greek government.

The day after, Standard & Poor’s declassified the Greek bonds to BB+ (Junk bonds), so these were sold in the Stock Exchanges at an interest rate not less than 10%. The greek government protested with the Agency, but it was too late.

Some days after, a new declassifying operation was repeated on bonds of Spain and Portugal. Successively Moody's recalled that also Italy and United Kingdom show public debts and annual deficits too high respect the EU standards.

After the losses suffered by the Greek bonds, some economists observed that the credit needed by Greece to avoid default will amount to about 70 billion Euro per year. This means that Greece will give back not only the 45 billions, but also other 25 billions to some creditors which speculated, thanks to a suspect rating, on a financial operation between two parties. In other words, the system of free market “regulated” by private rating agencies presents an extra cost which compels the indebted countries to return much more than the original debt.

The question arising from these facts is the same that troubled the governments during the 2008 financial crisis: Why some private Agencies have the power to trigger the financial default of the bank’s system and even of the States ?

This power is unacceptable because only the States have the democratic power to take decisions about politics and macro-economics. A solution has been immediately foreseen by EU governments through the institution of an European rating Agency. A collateral action to avoid conflict of interest between private operators, has been made by the US Senate which on May 14 established that in the emission of derivative products the choice of the rating agency pertains to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). However much work needs to be done in regulating the global financial market.

Let’s remember that two years ago many industrialised countries discovered that a great financial bubble (a US Court is just inquiring about its origin) triggered the default of banks, followed by a general economic recession centered in the G20 area.

14. Raising awareness of depression in at-risk groups

We're very concerned at the high suicide rate in young gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) people and are very keen to see them gain a strong representation in the mental health arena. In short, we want to make sure that we look after these young people.

According to the rough stats we have at hand, people in the GLBTI community are four times more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to fall victim to mental illness, including depression and suicide.

The problem is that we don't really know the actual percentage of GLBTI people who suffer, because we suspect that many of these young people don't ever get the chance to seek help. We are determined to change that.

Beyond Blue (the national depression initiative) in conjunction with Adelaide Health Technology Assessment (part of The University of Adelaide) have produced a draft paper entitled, 'Clinical Practical Guidelines: Depression in Adolescents and Young Adults.'

We would like to have the GLBTI community represented in these guidelines as a group of young people who are at very high risk of mental illness.

15. Suicide Prevention Campaign - Lets Do Something!

IT'S A MATTER OF LIFE & DEATH - YOUR LOVED ONES NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!

SUICIDE IS CAUSING MORE DEATHS IN NORTHERN IRELAND THAN SWINE FLU AND ROAD ACCIDENTS - SO WHERE IS THE SENSE OF URGENCY TO UNDERSTAND AND ELIMINATE THIS KILLER? WHERE ARE THE EMERGENCY PREVENTION STRATEGIES, SCHEMES & CAMPAIGNS? We see no education in schools, no information and training for parents, no TV campaigns to raise awareness and a minimum of funding for the voluntary sector who are trying to help....... The government is failing miserably in its duty to preserve and protect the lives of our loved ones.... WHY??

Author and community worker, Andrew Willoughby, project manager on a scheme funded by the Australian government - Project X - brought the suicide rate in an Australian town down to ZERO - Yes that's right - ZERO! and it took little more than 12 months to achieve!

Andrew Willoughby visited Derry City in January 2008 to pass on this knowledge, experience and findings. See the article about his visit here
http://www.derryjournal.com/interview/Andrew-Willoughby-to-visit-city.3718000.jp

Despite his visit - OUR LOVED ONES ARE STILL DYING BY SUICIDE - WHY?

BECAUSE THE GOVT & OTHER OFFICIAL BODIES CHOOSE NOT TO INVEST OR INVEST A BARE MINIMUM IN THIS AREA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - our loved ones are dying needlessly - all the resources we need to prevent any more suicides is there for the asking - all we need to do is: GET ENOUGH PEOPLE TO ASK!!!!!! We need the government to sit up, take notice, acknowledge the emergency and urgency of the situation and implement this scheme on a nationwide scale... IMMEDIATELY! THIS IS A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH:(.

How many more of our children and loved ones have to die before something is done?

Please follow the link below to sign this petition and pass it on to everyone you know - help make a difference and prevent any more needless deaths.

16. Ignite Low Level Psilocybin Research in the United States

There are a plethora of mental and physical disorders that effect millions of americans today that could possibly be solved, if we only push research in the direction of one drug; Psilocybin. Forgetting the connotation of drug culture and hippies, Psilocybin has many redeeming qualities, if taken in moderate doses.

Some of the problems that this drug shows promise of curing are: Depression, Multiple Sclerosis, High Blood Pressure, Chronic Migraines, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, not to mention the things we may discover on the way. In the '60's, there was research done with Psilocybin, but it was done almost exclusively in high-doses. Low-level therapy with the drug may yield better results than previous research.

17. Medicare 100% Psychology Coverage For Disability

Currently under Medicare if you have a diagnosis which requires psychological visits to a psychiatrist or psychologist you receive 50% coverage, even if this is your primary diagnosis.

The out-of-pocket cost is great and virtually impossible to pay, when you receive only a monthly check, which is used to pay for your general living expenses.

If these visits were covered, it would provide those on disability for depression, anxiety, substance abuse and more, with a likely outcome of the recipient’s ability to get proper treatment and return to work, thus leaving the disability program, saving tax payers a substantial amount of money, as well as benefiting the recipient with hope for recovery.

18. New Educational Legislation for Autism and Neurodiversity

The prevalence rate of 1 of every 150 makes autism one of the most common developmental disabilities, affecting more children than childhood cancer, Down Syndrome and juvenile diabetes, combined.

Autism manifests differently in every individual on the spectrum. However we all have three commonalities, we socialize intellectually, which effectively means we are genetically different than the general population. The second thing is that we are by definition an invisible class of people, third we don't lie (theory of mind).

Another misconception about us is that autism is more severe for some individuals than others, how can any researcher make this deduction when they have not worn our skin? I have High Functioning Aspergers, my language abilities are amazing, this being said I am rendered silent in social situations due to my anxiety, inability to trust, and how much I truly will bore my listener.

You can't begin to fathom the frustration, being ostracized, of knowing that for all of time I will never be able to communicate verbally to others. The anxiety, depression and isolation is overwhelming, when considering this idea. Do I really have the ability to speak? No only via typed words, the fear of not being able to figure out where people are coming from is debilitating. It is safe at home, I know that there are hundreds of thousands of parents who battle every day with the public school system.

You are not alone my child suffers every day he goes to school, his FAPE is violated, he is physically abused, misunderstood by professionals who carry titles that say they specialize in helping him. I have come to one conclusion, I can't hide anymore I will not tolerate another child being misunderstood by the public school systems in this country.

I will not see these children's unique gifts squandered away because they don't think like the rest of this world! Join me in signing this petition to demand that our Congress change the educational laws and system for education our very special children, and remove the glass that all autistic individuals stand behind.

23. Petition to End Bailouts

US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who is a former CEO of Goldman Sachs, is proposing to commit at least $700 billion of taxpayer dollars to buy "non-performing" -- that is, bad -- securities and debts from private corporations, including foreign banks, who are at risk due to the effects of the assumption of unwise risk.

This deal would also give Paulson and his successors unchecked, "non-reviewable" powers that prevent their actions from being challenged in any court of law.

These plans are un-American, dangerous, and will not work.

25. Support Mental Health Rights

Mental Health history is sad and unfortunate. Conditions are improving. People are still subjected to involuntary admissions, solitude, excess drugs, electrocution, and lack of factual disclosure of treatments.

26. More Support For Children's Mental Health

1 in 10 children and young people aged 5 - 16 suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder.

1 in 12 children and young people deliberately self-harm and around 25,000 are admitted to hospital every year due to the severity of their injuries.

Nearly 80,000 children and young people suffer from severe depression.

Those statistics above were collected from http://www.youngminds.org.uk who aim to support children and young people living with mental illness.

Rarely do we think of mental illness in children and young people, but as a 14 year old self harmer I am asking you to pay more attention to solving this problem.

Living with mental illness that you cannot combat alone is lonely and scary, so please, fund more charities that support those under 18 with mental and allow more children to be helped through more organisations.

28. Save Michael Gardiner's Career

July 18, 2006

The Eagles treatment of Michael Gardiner is harsh, uncaring and unforgiving.

It is also downright hypocritical!

Regardless of having the best midfield in the competition, it is a simple fact that no football club has ever gone all the way without key position forwards producing the goals.

The Eagles won two premierships with Suma up front, and the only other time they looked dangerous was when Scott Cummins won the Coleman.

Despite this, the Eagles had failed to recruit the forwards needed.

They went into the Grand Final with no recognised forwards! Gardiner was thrust into the role, under the most pressure imaginable, and when he failed to produce was made the scapegoat for their loss.

Is it any wonder that he suffers from Depression.

Both Ben Cousins and Michael Gardiner failed to fully answer questions regarding their alleged involvement with alleged criminals.

Several Eagles have committed off-field "indiscretions," including Ben Cousins and Ashley Sampi. Why is Michael Gardiner the only one to have his career ended.

When confronted with a booze bus, Ben Cousins ran away. At least Gardiner stayed around for the cops, and has promised to make restitution.

Michael is apparently suffering from depression, an insidious illness not fully understood.

The Eagles response: "we're going to support Michael…by destroying his career.."

I am asking all WA football fans to sign this petition.

I am also urging all Eagles Member to "GO GREEN" for Michael at the round 17 game with Adelaide. Please take, wear and wave everything GREEN that you have. You can still scream for the team, but the GREEN will also show your support for Michael.

Thanks for your support.
