1. Let's throw Chris Hadfield an old-fashioned ticker tape parade! 
To celebrate the first Canadian to command the International Space Station and to celebrate his successful efforts to get Canada and the world excited about space exploration again using social media, Chris Hadfield deserves a ticker tape parade.
There are two other reasons for doing this. First of all, ticker tape parades are awesome and why we don't have one every month is a mystery. Second, in light of the renewed enthusiasm for space exploration, Canadian citizens who care about space and the Canadian Space Agency should demand that the agency and the larger industry continue to receive funding and investment to maintain Canada's reputation as an aerospace leader.
The Canadian Space Agency's funding has been frozen for about a decade and recent federal budgets have even mandated cuts of about $30 million by 2014-15. The aerospace industry employs about 66,000 people in high-tech, well-paying jobs that are important not only to the country's technological advancement but also to the economy.
If we want to keep the jobs, the expertise, and all those nice warm feelings we get from space exploration, let's continue to invest in it — and the first step is a ticker tape parade for Commander Hadfield.
2. Stop Negative Media Ads by Conservative Party in Canada
Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party of Canada are using donations and tax revenue to post negative, misleading attack ads. These ads are pervasive in all forms of the media including TV, internet and radio. They even take place outside of election periods.
Rather than promoting a positive agenda, they make fun in a derisive and false way their opponents. This should stop now as Canada and Canadians should and do hold themselves to a higher standard.
3. Investigate Toxic PCB's on Canadian Warships
Canadian Navy destroyers, tankers, and destroyer escort ships built in the 1950's and 1960's contained toxic PCB's: "Any of a family of industrial compounds produced by chlorination of biphenyl, noted primarily as an environmental pollutant that accumulates in animal tissue with resultant pathogenic and teratogenic effects."
Polychlorinated biphenyl, or PCB's are known to cause cancer, genetic, and neurological disorders in those exposed to them, even over a short period of time. The above mentioned warships were eventually sunk as artificial reefs after decommissioning, and divers later found high levels of PCB's emanating from them. While this poses a risk to marine, plant-life, and recreational divers, what about the 10's of thousands of Naval personnel who lived, worked, and sailed on these vessels during their 30 year life span?

With the imminent passage of Bill 14 in Quebec, democracy is being legislated away along with our fundamental rights and freedoms. And there seems to be no way to stop it. UNLESS we do something that makes international headlines and draws the spotlight to us.
Imagine 10,000 Quebecers/Canadians applying for asylum to the United States - you can't buy optics like that.

The Bill of Rights of 1688 contained, as its leading term, the right to bear arms. Back when Canada was technically still under English rule they allowed the citizens the right to bear arms for protection, so why not now?
According to the Canadian Charter of Rights And Freedoms, under the Constitution Act of 1982, under Legal Rights, Section 7; Life, Liberty and Security of Person: "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice." Under Section 12; Treatment or Punishment: "Everyone has the right not to be subject to any cruel and unusual treatment or punishment."
When you read those 2 sections of the Canadian Charter of Rights And Freedoms, how can you argue that openly carrying a firearm is not safe? Would people commit crimes if they knew everyday citizens have the ability to stop them? I don't think so. We in Canada have what is called an "Authorization to Carry" license, however, the Provincial Chief Firearm Officers (CFO's) have agreed not to issue such licenses. The law in Canada says you can defend your life with equal force of your attacker, it also says the law acknowledges the possibility of an individual requiring a restricted handgun for protection from other individuals when police protection is insufficient.
It seems as if the government doesn't find human life valuable enough for Canadian citizens to obtain a legal permit to open carry. How can you defend your life with "equal force" if the person threatening your life has a gun & you don't? It seems like a double standard to allow Police, Attorneys, Judges, & Money couriers the right to bear arms for defensive purposes, but as private citizens, we don't have the right to do the same.
We need to legalize Marijuana at the federal level.
Several polls since 2003 have found that a majority of Canadians agreed with the statement, "The use of marijuana should be legalized", including one in 2009 done by Angus Reid, with 53% for legalization.
The latest being in 2012 by Forum Research Inc. which suggested "66% of Canadians are in favour of the legalization or decriminalization of marijuana, with just 20% supporting leaving the laws as they are now."
7. Pass the Horse Slaughter Protection Act
While the slaughterhouses in the United States have recently been closed, horses are still being slaughtered– they are merely being shipped across the border to Canada and Mexico, where they meet horrific ends.
In Mexico, for example, horses are repeatedly stabbed by “puntilla” knives until they bleed to death. These are not horses who are bred for meat, but horses who could have been a little girl’s best friend until purchased by a killer buyer at an auction.
In 2012, Obama signed an Appropriations Bill that would once again pave the way for slaughterhouses to operate in the United States again. Not withstanding the enormous environmental, legal and other concerns that a slaughterhouse brings to a town, the suffering of the horses who are sent to these plants is astronomical. They are sometimes put into trailers and left for days without water, then half-crazed, they are violently prodded into the slaughterhouse, where they are supposed to be killed by a captive bolt. Unfortunately, the horses are so scared that these bolts sometimes go into the horses’ eyes and the horse is struck again and again until stunned. It is not uncommon for a horse not to be killed by the captive bolt, but only stunned, so that they are actually alive while being vivisected.
Considering how horses are treated to the kill pens and how they are killed, here is no possible way that slaughter can ever be considered humane euthanasia.
8. A Call to Every Canadian: Petition Against Bill C-45
December 5, 2012,
The Harper Government passed bill C-45.
2.5 MILLION protected Canadian lakes and rivers, were instantly, reduced to just 82.
Only 62 rivers and 93 lakes are now protected by Federal law.
A law created over 130 years ago, by our first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald.
9. Stop the British Columbia Wolf Hunt!
Wolves are being indiscriminately killed in British Columbia, and under the pretext of "Wildlife Management"!
So-called "conservationists" are killing wolves, even machine-gunning entire packs from helicopters, based on the claim that they are reducing caribou herds; however, loss of habitat is a far more probable cause. Natural ecosystems are self regulating and wolves play a vital role in them.
There is also an increase in the slaughter of wolves to protect livestock on private and public land with insufficient attention to alternative measures such as improved farming practices and animal husbandry.
Wolves are killed for sport and their body parts used as trophies; this is an abhorrent activity and wasteful use of wildlife.
Wolves deserve wilderness habitat in which to live a natural pack life, unmolested.
Humans are the greatest threat to healthy wolf populations, and it's our responsibility to be a voice for these wild animals and the wilderness in which they live.
10. Petition on the recent changes to Unemployment Insurance eligibility criteria:

We, the undersigned residents of Canada, draw attention of the House to the following:
THAT the government of Canada has recently made changes to the eligibility requirements for unemployment insurance (UI);
THAT these changes have been made behind closed doors without any input from the ordinary Canadian citizens who are affected by such policies and these changes will negatively affect the livelihood of numerous Canadians;
THAT the adopted changes will negatively impact Canadians nation wide, in particular they will impact those Canadians who live in rural areas in which the economy is dependent upon seasonal employment.
We feel that the adopted changes to the unemployment eligibility criteria will force people out of their specialized occupations into unskilled, low wage jobs. In addition, we agree that Canadian individuals will be forced to look for employment at great distances outside their area of residence causing them to incur unreasonable time commitments and travel costs.
Combined, we feel these changes may lead to increased poverty for unemployed individuals as well as the families which they support.
11. Harsher Sentences for Pedophiles
Pedophiles are not getting harsh enough sentences. They are given slaps on the wrist and are often free to re-offend soon after conviction. Here`s just 2 examples of many:
-David James Lebanc. He was one of the 2 men involved in the confinement and sexual assault of a 16 yr old boy for two weeks in Halifax. He was already facing pending charges from 2010 for sexual assault, touching a person under age 16, and making child pornography with a 2yr old and a 5yr old! Leblanc was released in 2010 so long as he didn`t go near children. He failed to comply in 2011, and served only 18 days in prison! This assault on the 16yr old boy was 100% preventable. Our judicial system failed that boy.
-Christopher Paul Neil. He served a mere 5 yrs. in a Thai prison for posting hundreds of pictures of him assaulting more than one child. He was arrested upon his return to Canada for being a threat to all children, yet was released a few days later so long as he promises not to go near children. Sound familiar?
As per recent news articles, Harper's C-10 crime bill gives harsher sentences to pot growers than to pedophiles. Something is wrong with that.
Why are these monsters allowed to get away with this? Our system needs some reform. As long as the penalties remain as slack as they are, this is going to keep happening.
12. Keep Canada a free and soverign nation
On June 16th, 2012, The canadian government passed the omnibus budget bill, which allows U.S. law enforcement officers to come across the border and arrest canadians. This is not right. As a canadian, I feel that with this bill passed, civil rights will be breached and our very sovereignty in danger.
Furthermore, the Government of Canada did not take in the opinions of the people, who for the most part are infuriated with this bill. Although I do believe that criminals crossing borders to escape U.S. authority is a problem, those criminals are CANADIAN citizens and should be handled by CANADIAN authorities.
If we allow this to pass, Canada's future will be no better than if we lost the War of 1812.
13. Extension of Deadlines under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement
Wednesday September 19th 2012 was the deadline for submitting applications to the Independent Assessment Process (IAP) which awards compensation for the abuse, harm, and continuing trauma suffered by Aboriginal Peoples at Residential Schools in Canada.
The IAP is a result of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (full settlement text available: http://www.residentialschoolsettlement.ca/IRS%20Settlement%20Agreement-%20ENGLISH.pdf) where the Canadian government, churches and individuals involved agreed to a resolution of the court claim.
Residential Schools were operated in Canada for much of the 19th and 20th centuries; the last school closing in Manitoba in 1996. It has been estimated that at least 150,000 students went to these schools.
Approximately 80,000 survivors did not submit claims by the deadline.
Applications for compensation for the abuse, harm, and trauma these surviving students will not be accepted after September 19th 2012 without permission from a court and these survivors rights to make a claim in the IAP will be FOREVER EXTINGUISHED.
In making an application, people are asked to give explicit details about the type, form, frequency and affects of the abuse they suffered while in Residential Schools. For many these are experiences that they have spent a lifetime repressing and it may take a lifetime for them to come to a place where they are able to speak about what happened and how it has affected them and their families. They were given 5 years.
As Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn Atleo also said
“It should be noted that over 30 per cent of First Nations in Canada live in remote and isolated communities, many with minimal to not access to internet or postal services. We are concerned that there are homeless, incarcerated or those living across the border who are similarly disadvantaged … [and that] far too many former students of residential schools have not achieved just resolution of their grievances through the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement application process.”

The definition of "human being" is of fundamental importance to the governing of Canadian society and the functioning of the Canadian judicial system. The definition present in the Canadian Criminal Code (under section 223(1)) is potentially outdated, and should be revised in light of more recent medical evidence.
The purpose of Motion 312 is to update this definition, and then petition Parliament to make all necessary legal changes in light of revision, if there are any.
Canadian residents of any age may sign.
Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982):
Section (1) "...guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society."
If the unborn are persons, abortion reform is a "reasonable limit" to guarantee "rights and freedoms" of all human beings.
Section (7) "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice."
If the unborn are persons, they must be granted "the right to life", and abortion reform would be necessary to reach such "fundamental justice".
The Canadian Human Rights Act (1985):
Section (2) "...that all individuals should have an opportunity equal with other individuals to make for themselves the lives that they are able and wish to have and to have their needs accommodated, consistent with their duties and obligations as members of society, without being hindered in or prevented from doing so by discriminatory principles...."
If the unborn are human beings, they must be granted "opportunity equal with others to make for themselves...lives". Abortion reform would not be part of "discriminatory principles" against women, but part of ensuring equality in opportunity to live.
If the unborn are persons, then Parliament has the moral duty to give the unborn the right to life. Parliament must, then, also grant pregnant women more federal support, by any just means, so that the child(ren) may be born, and that she does not suffer financially or otherwise.
15. Reverse Ontario Anti-Strike Legislation
The Ontario Liberal Government, with the support of the PC Party of Ontario, has passed the Anti-Strike Legislation. This legislation imposes new two-year contracts on thousands of teachers that freeze the pay of senior instructors and cut benefits. The legislation also gives the government the power to ban strikes and lockouts for least two years.
I am not a teacher and do not work in the education sector but I know that there are two things that Ontarians need to fight for - One is health care and the other is EDUCATION!
16. Stop the Disastrous Grey Seal Cull
A key study published in the science journal Nature ("Transient dynamics of an altered large marine ecosystem", September 2011"), by Canadian scientists using the DFO's own data, totally refutes Ashfield, the DFO and the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council. The latter insist on slaughtering 70,000 - 140,000 grey seals (using machine guns and incinerators), as they blame the grey seals for slowing the cod recovery. This slaughter would cost $35 million dollars when the DFO is already facing cutbacks.
Why is the government taking such a foolish action? Possibly to distract the East coast fishers (who do vote) from the real agenda: deregulation of the East Coast fishing industry.
Such a policy would be very unpopular on the East Coast of Canada, as it would likely would likely lead to the destruction of the independent fishing industry. However, if the Harper government can distract the small fishers with 'support' in the form of a massive grey seal slaughter, they hope to escape a voter back-lash in the next federal election.
But the data shows that the cod (and other groundfish stocks) are recovering in the same areas the grey seals have higher populations, proving the grey seals are not holding back the cod recovery. The cod collapsed decades ago due to over fishing, and are only now starting to recover. Destroying the grey seals will only destabilize a tenuous Grand Banks ecosystem, actually threatening the cod recovery.
The proposed grey seal slaughter is only about politics, and has nothing to do with science.
17. Put workers' rights above union rights
Canada is the only democratic country in the world where employers can be forced - by law - to hire only members of a certain union. It's one of the last countries where workers can be forced - after being hired - to join a union in order to keep their job, and it's the only one where workers are made to pay union dues - even if they are not members of a union. Once that money is in their hands, union bosses can spend it on virtually an activity or cause they want - including political.
In contrast to this, employers in Europe - as well as Australia, New Zealand and the United States - can't be forced to hire only members of a union, nor (except for in a handful of hold-out American states) can workers be forced to join a union after they are hired just to keep their jobs. Union bosses can't collect dues from non-members, nor can they use the money they do get from members to support activities not directly related to collective bargaining without the express consent of each individual worker.
18. Reinstate "pips and crowns" for Canadian Army officers
Prior to Unification in 1968, Canada's Army officers wore the traditional "pips and crowns" for ranks from second lieutenant to general.
Upon Unification, the Army (or Mobile Command as it became known) wore generic bars, the same as the Navy and Air Force.
From recent reports of ‘Enbridge pipeline spills’ and in consideration of the high level and probability of extreme environmental damage resulting from any crude oil pipeline rupture, it would only make good sense to install a continual monitoring system to guard against any ‘rupture’ condition.
Whereby on ‘system failure’ as an audible alarm sounds the product flow is also stopped immediately from upstream of the protected/monitored portion of the pipeline by the closing of the sections’ ‘inlet shut-off valve’, which safely stops all product flow into the ‘protected and monitored’ portion of the line.
20. Stop the Sale of Nexen to CNOOC (China)
China wants to buy Canada's oil sands. China's national oil company, CNOOC, wants to start by buying Nexen Energy, of Calgary. The shareholders of Nexen have been offered a 60% premium for their shares.
The Government of Canada must decide whether the sale of Nexen should be allowed under the government's "net benefit" rule; that is, will it bring about a net benefit to Canadians. This decision must be made in a reasonable time, typically, 90 days or so.
CNOOC should not be allowed to buy Nexen because national oil companies will divert Canadian oil to their nation first, when oil grows scarce on this rapidly shrinking planet, regardless how high a price Canadians will be willing to pay to buy it back.
Canadians should not allow any Canadian oil company to fall into the hands of any company owned by another country in an era where energy security is becoming increasingly important.

I ask you to read the information and help us make aware this critical issue regarding the need for a helmet law for all ages.

We would like him to be able to go there more easily so he can tour the country! I don't live there, but it would be nice for the Canadians.
This is quite obviously a very First World Problem, but it's one we might actually be able to solve with just a petition. It's a tiny piece of worldsuck we can decrease for the Canadians, and for John too.
The federal government has moved quickly to pass Bill C-38, the omnibus budget implementation bill entitled the Jobs, Growth and Long-term Prosperity Act. Rather than ensure the sustainability of Canada’s social and environmental protections, this bill reduces funding and oversight. These reductions will only lead to larger and costlier problems for Canadians and their governments in the future. If passed, this legislation will, among other measures, reduce income security, shrink employment insurance, weaken investments in food safety and security, harm employment equity provisions, dismantle environmental regulation, and backtrack on climate-change policies.
Canadian nurses are sending a loud and clear message to the Conservative government: stop cutting Canada’s environmental, health and social systems.
As more than 800 registered nurses (RNs) gathered in Vancouver on June 18 for the Canadian Nurses Association’s (CNA) annual general meeting and biennial convention, they demanded action to halt the systemic dismantling of income security programs, environmental protection measures and investments in health. Assembled nurses urged Prime Minister Stephen Harper and members of parliament to stop these cuts, which are fundamentally irresponsible and damaging to the health and wellness of Canadians.
CNA declared that RNs will speak out against these cuts, and that the association will support its members to protect the integrity of essential programs and the health of our nation.
CNA calls upon Canadian nurses, other healthcare providers, and members of the public to endorse CNA’s Declaration by signing this petition and asking others to sign!

Plutôt que d’assurer la durabilité des programmes de protection sociale et environnementale du Canada, ce projet de loi réduit le financement et la surveillance. Ces réductions budgétaires entraîneront seulement des problèmes plus importants et onéreux pour la population canadienne et ses gouvernements dans l’avenir. Si cette loi est adoptée, parmi d’autres mesures, elle réduira la sécurité du revenu, restreindra l’assurance-emploi, diminuera le financement dans la salubrité et la sécurité alimentaires, nuira aux dispositions sur l’équité en matière d’emploi, démantèlera le règlement sur l’environnement et reculera concernant les politiques sur les changements climatiques.

In light of the PC Government's pleading guilty to illegal campaign spending and other misdealings, I think we need to have another election.
