211. Brigitte Stavaruk was unfairly evicted from Big Brother
Tonight Big Brother 2008 - voted off Brigitte Stavaruk Most Popular housemater on Big Brothers Polls - of over 7 weeks.
Brigitte Stavaruk was evicted from the Big Brother house, minutes before Pamela Anderson went into the house.
There have been rumours asking why Rory Ammon wasn't evicted!!!! Is it because they consider the entertainment of Pamela Anderson and Rory to be viable!!!
Rory was voted the least popular housemate on the polls and was sure to go!!!!
Australia has nominated Rory at least 3 times trying to get rid of him, with him being the second most popular to go in percentages in the last eviction.
Why has our most favourite housemate gone? and the least favourite stayed? just because Pamela Anderson has gone in.
Please sign your name if you think Brigitte was unfairly evicted and if you think the voting system was rigged!!!!!!
Please note: Profanity is a violation of the Terms & Conditions of Go Petition. So please refrain from abusive comments. IP Addresses will be monitored.
212. Get the NRL to listen to the fans!
The NRL won't listen to the fans...they think the game is in a perfect state, when week in week out teams are getting robbed by shoddy refereeing decisions.
It is only worried about teams in Sydney when it is the NATIONAL Rugby League.
213. Keep Australian jobs here!
TO THE HONOURABLE THE SPEAKER AND MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ASSEMBLED IN THE AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT:
This petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the House the analysis of Australian labour market trends undertaken by the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR) which found 850,000 jobs in the services sector, or 1 in 10 jobs, are at risk of being off-shored over the next 2 decades. In banking and financial services, businesses are being reorganised in such a way that Australian staff will be/are being made redundant, because the work they perform/ed in Australia for their employer will be performed offshore, in countries with substantially lower labour costs, by either a third party service provider or an owned subsidiary.
Your petitioners point out to the House that the loss of these jobs from Australia is bad for the Australian economy and of grave consequence for the workers and communities affected by the changes.
Your petitioners further point out that we harbour serious concerns for the security of the very sensitive personal data of Australian customers that must accompany these jobs to other countries where Australian privacy and data protection laws have no jurisdiction.
214. Save The All Australian River
The River Murray belongs to all Australians. I feel sure that is how our Ancestors felt when exploring the River Murray for the first time.
As a proud Australian why do we have to wait for Politicians to sit around a table to discuss the outcome of water for all Australians. Western Australians visit the River and so do other Australians from other States who do not rely on the River system.
Now in the 21st century the state of the River Murray has become crucial, why can’t the Politician say “Open the gates let the Water flow” for all to use.
Monitor the use of the water, stipulate what can be farmed and No More over farming!
Many families rely on the River to survive, us city dwellers do but the people in the East of Australia can not hog all the water. Their farming compatriots in the South of Australia are in desperate need of water, for their families and farms also the Aboriginal tribe that will loose their traditional land if the river and lakes die.
One of the greatest Rivers in the world is dying please finally do something get your act together. Politicians water is a natural recourse it is there for everyone one to use. Do something that should have been done 100yrs ago. They say, 40,000 homes in South Australian has to be built in a year, to keep up with population growth. What is going to happen when South Australian completly runs out of water. There should be a Politician out there that should have some brains to give some thought to population growth in our State, and the future use of water without slugging us an extra 12% on our water bills, with all the other extra increases we have to pay for now days.
SAVE OUR RIVER FOR ALL AUSTRALIANS OF THE FUTURE.
215. Save St George/BankSA from the Westpac Merger!
St.George & BankSA staff and customers are opposed to the takeover by Westpac because:
1) Competition – The consumer advocate CHOICE says that the takeover has the potential to significantly reduce competition in the banking sector. Consumers need more competition, not less, in order to drive down fees. Australia needs more banks not fewer. The more the finance sector concentrates under fewer participants the less choice for consumers.
2) Jobs – if the takeover goes ahead the new group would have 30,000 employees. Industry analysts predict that 5,000 of these jobs could be cut. Indeed Westpac is flaunting that one of the benefits of the takeover would be the removal of duplicate infrastructure and the development of common processing and support systems.
The first to be affected will be back office functions – call centre, processing and support jobs. The propaganda from Westpac says that they will keep St George and BankSA branches, however the history of similar takeovers indicate that eventually the St George and BankSA brands will be phased out.
Over time the commerecial imperative would be to close down the St George/BankSA branch, and the bigger brand will prevail. It happened to Bank of Melbourne, despite what Westpac said at the time, and it will happen to St George and BankSA.
St George and BankSA staff also have a much better Enterprise Agreement than Westpac. St George staff stand to lose guaranteed salary increases, rest breaks, allowances and other entitlements.”
We do not believe that the Westpac merger with St George/BankSA will be in Australia's national interest.
216. Get Telstra to sell the iPhone in Australia
Apple will be releasing the 3G iPhone on July 11 2008 to both Optus and Vodafone, leaving Australia's largest telecommunication company and leading 3G network without.
217. Stop petrol price rises before they kill the nation
Not only are working class Australia being costs from every angle with the ever increasing rises in electricity, food, services, interest, housing, rents, and petrol prices, which we all need to make a living with as we can not rely on public transport to get us to work on time ans is not available sufficiently in rural areas.
This increase in petrol costs are now being passed onto the consumer for everything we purchase as well. We also have to endure increasing maintenance costs on our vehicles due to the poor state of out road infrastructure Federally and Locally and the people with the power to make a change don't seem to care. There is always allot of talk and no action just bandaid that are put in place to keep the community thinking something is actually going to happen.
This affects all of us. Most of all it hits those who are just scraping by. Those on low incomes, all pensioners, rural communities, farmers, small businesses, our tourism industry which affects thousands of people reliant on it as their primary incomes...... and the list goes on.
218. Bring Miley Cyrus to Australia
Hey guys. It's Amelia and Andrea and we made this petition to try get Miley Cyrus to bring her sold out tour to Australia.
There are already rumours about this being true, but we want to make sure of it and get as much support as we can.
So if you are a mega Miley fan like we are, please support us by signing the petition.
219. Gerard Way should come to Australia!
Gee should cum 2 oz agen
220. Youth worker for Ravenswood
Recently the Ravenswood Community has experienced antisocial behaviour in our area.
We the Ravenswood Neighbourhood House believe that the lack of structured activities in the area for youth is a huge contributing factor.
221. Bring New Kids on The Block to Australia
New Kids on the Block enjoyed enormous success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Assembled in Boston in 1984 by producer Maurice Starr, the members consist of brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood.
The group went on to sell over 70 million albums worldwide and generated hundreds of millions of dollars in concert revenues. They toured Australia in 1992 and now WE WANT THEM BACK!!!
222. Optus should peer with WAIX
Singapore Telecommunications and its Australian subsidiary, Optus, have terminated the Singaporean carrier's Internet peering arrangement with the Western Australian Internet Association's WAIX exchange, citing "a global network consolidation plan".
Singapore Telecommunications had been transporting 10-15 Mbps of traffic direct beween Western Australia and Singapore, or just under 4TB per month.
That traffic is now passing between Western Australia and Singapore via the United States or Sydney, adding between 100 milliseconds and 300 milliseconds to the latency, creating problems for real-time Internet applications such as voice over IP and video collaboration.
223. Youth of Australia want help for our Elderly now!
We want Prime Minister Rudd to know that young Australians care about our elderly, and know they are doing it tough.
Please give them more money in their pension each week!
224. Permanent Resident Visa- Investment Bond withdrawn. Innocents left in Limbo!
Approx October 2007 saw the end of A$100,000 investment bond that was formerly a means to claim 5 bonus points for certain General Skilled Migration applicants. We understand that this problem was brought about as a result of the unauthorised actions of a certain bank official. However, it’s negative impact is being felt by a significant number of completely innocent applicants.
The length of time reaching a resolution is beginning to have a serious effect on some of us. I am sure you would appreciate that when most applicants make an application for settlement in Australia, our lives go into a kind of limbo, where we’re no longer fully pursuing our lives in our home country, but not yet starting our new lives in Australia. We realise that, until we have been granted visa, there are no guarantees of success. Nevertheless, applicants enter the process with a certain degree of legitimate expectation. It is now around 6 months since this issue arose, and the lack of an indication of our future prospects is becoming very alarming for some.
As you would appreciate, few people have a “lazy” $100,000 just lying around, so most of us have taken quite serious measures to raise the funds. Some have remortgaged our homes to release equity, and others have put our homes on the market to do so. These processes involve expense to the people concerned, but these were expenses we were willing to bear to achieve our aim of living in Australia. While we knew such steps were on the understanding that our applications were not guaranteed approval, we did so acting on a request from the Department to make the investment, and with a degree of obligation and expectation.
We understand that there may be issues we are unaware of, which make the decision more complex than the perspective we have on it. Having said that, we would request that strong consideration be given to finding a means to award the 5 points to all applicants, on the basis of their previously declared intention to fulfil the requirements for these points. As you would be aware, these points are no longer available to any applications made after 1 September 2007, so the effect of any precedent being established is limited to the affected caseload only. We believe that, if you accept that these applicants entered into the system in good faith, then that good faith should be returned now that this problem has arisen.
It is worth remembering that from the point of view of the Migration Program, we are all applicants who, when they applied, prima facie met the requirements for visas. We therefore met the objectives of the program before a series events over which we had no control conspired to complicate matters. As such, we represent a body of people who had a defined and accepted value to the Migration Program. I ask that you accept that our value as potential migrants is overwhelmingly retained. Set against this value, the only negative is the value of funds no longer available to the various state treasuries, which does not seem to outweigh our potential positive contribution to Australia.
We concede that we are not privy to any arguments, which may have been made for reasons to deny the points. Nevertheless, we believe that arguments favouring denial would need to be compelling to overcome the more universal spirit of fairness which, we are sure you will agree, must be the basis for taking any such decisions.
In conclusion, we have three requests to make:
First, we ask for confirmation that the Department has remitted the matter to you, and that you are in the process of determining a resolution to the issue.
Second, if possible, can you provide some indication of when we may hear a decision on how this issue will be resolved?
Third, I ask that you give strong consideration to a resolution that sees the award of the 5 points to these applicants, to allow our applications to proceed to finalisation.
We thank you for your consideration of my request, and look forward to your response.
225. NRL: Return to a Final Five Series
The current final 8 series is a joke, a mediocre team can scrape in and still make the finals.
It appears to be based more on marketing and revenue factors rather than reward for consistent effort in a season.
226. Allow Myxomatosis Vaccinations for Rabbits in Australia
Myxomatosis is a deadly strain of virus that affects the European and Cottontail rabbits, and there is currently no vaccination available in Australia against this virus.
The myxomatosis virus was originally spread through the American wild rabbit population during the late 1800’s and was subsequently introduced into Northern Australia and its relative parts so as to control the rabbit problem in crops and other plantations around Queensland. It managed to control the pest problem, devastatingly reducing the rabbit population from 600 million to 100million in two years.
The ones that survived developed a strong immunity to the disease, and as a result wild rabbits are more immune now to myxomatosis than when the virus strain was implemented into Australian rabbit populations during the 1950s.
There is however, no vaccination currently available in Australia to domestic rabbits and they remain at a constant risk to contracting the virus. Myxomatosis usually proves fatal for any rabbit exposed to it, and they can die as soon as 48 hours after being exposed to the virus.
227. Reinstate Our ACT Kangaroos onto The Rehabilitation Licence
PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION TO HELP REINSTATE THE FULL TERM REHABILITATION OF OUR ACT SICK, INJURED, ORPHANED NATIVE EASTERN GREY KANGAROOS (EGK's), onto the ACT Rehabilitation Carers Licence. Please send the word around, post this petition onto your website, and send it to everyone else you know, and your mailing list.
Kangaroo meeting with Maxine Cooper, Commissioner of Sustainability and Environment, in her office on Thursday 14/10/10, that included discussions on full term rehabilitation for sick, injured, orphaned native Eastern Grey Kangaroos, which Maxine's dept is investigating.
Nora Preston has requested that a new expert advisory committee be David Croft, Nora Preston, Dror Ben-Ami, Daniel Ramp, Keely Boom, to replace all the unqualified non expert advisory committees.
Media release on 23/4/07 www.kangaroo-protection-coalition.com/kangaroo-archives25.html.
These animals mentioned below are all dead, however, the fight still goes on, to turn the site into Wildlife Carers Group proposed city Kangaroo Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, in tribute to the kangaroos that were needlessly tortured to death, under the rspca's watchful eyes, who then inappropriately claimed that this massacre was humane.
PLEASE sign our other petition as well on http://gopetition.com/petitions/save-all-the-kangaroos.html to save ALL the Eastern Grey Kangaroos on the Lawson Defence site (BNTS) from relocation and death, and turn the site into a Kangaroo Park/Wildlife Sanctuary with educational facilities, wildlife hospital, rehabilitation enclosures, etc. Media releases on 13 May 2007, http://canberra.yourguide.com.au/news/local/general/plan-for-three-days-of-death/584324.html, 14 May 2007, http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/05/14/world/main2799551.shtml?source=RSSattr=HOME_2799551, 20 May 2007, http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200705/s1927723.htm, http://www.spa.gov.sa/English/details.php?id=452929, http://news.monstersandcritics.com/asiapacific/news/printer_1309191.php, 25 May 2007, http://www.abcscience.net.au/news/stories/2008/03/07/2182771.htm, 7 March 2008.
These kangaroos have suffered enough and will not survive any relocation, which will cause acts of animal cruelty with this type of research, they must be left alone on the site where they have lived safely for their entire lives.
Nora Preston, The Founder/President of WCG - Wildlife Carers Group http://wcg.awardspace.com began rehabilitating wildlife in the early '80's.
ACT EGK's were rehabilitated in carers back yards, with their fences extended, to prevent them from escaping.
Our ACT (Australian Capital Territory) Eastern Grey Kangaroos were removed off our rehabilitation licence in mid 1980's, to prevent us from rehabilitating our sick, injured, orphaned NATIVE Eastern Grey Kangaroos, (EGK's) claiming, that our EGK's were not native to the ACT.
In 2005, Nora Preston, President and Founder of Wildlife Carers Group, (WCG) applied for and was issued with a licence by TAMS (Territory and Municipal Services), with a Rehabilitation Carers Licence, to rehabilitate sick, injured, orphaned native animals/wildlife.
Nora Preston contacted the Licensing Officer and the Local Chief Minister Jon Stanhope of the Labor Party, and pointed out to them that our Native EGK's were indeed native to the ACT, that the licence was incorrect and needed to be amended, and to include the full term rehabilitation of our Native EGK's.
Nora Preston - WCG, received A formal letter from both Jon Stanhope and the Licensing Officer at that time, from tams, apologising for the error, and amended the licence, however, only amended rehabilitation for 48 hours, instead of the required full term rehabilitation, and then want the healthy animals destroyed.
Failing to amend the Rehabilitation Licence to full term rehabilitation of our sick, injured, orphaned EGK's, allows acts of cruelty, inhumanely and unnecessarily killing/destroying EGK's that are healthy, and have every prospect of a successful rehabilitation.
This ACT licence is being governed under an old 1996 report.
Furthermore, Research has been cruel by TAMS, with Bromocriptine fertility research, which is an oral administration, suppressing the milk from the joey, slowly starving it to death, page 64/65 in Report 3, or cruelly ripping the joey from it's mothers pouch, causing bleeding of the mouth, with further hemorrhaging, injuries, and death. The 1996 ACT Kangaroo Advisory Council 3 Reports are on www.tams.act.gov.au/live/environment/local_wildlife/kangaroo_information/actkangarooadvisorycommitteereports
These are all acts of cruelty, therefore in breach of the animal welfare act, and will have to stop.
This report will show how out of date the current advisory council is, working off a report, reported in August 1996, however, Report 1, page 5/6, that was stating a report in late 1994, also recommended that the culling must stop, because they 'were over culling our native kangaroos', and yet, the wildlife rehabilitation licence was never updated to include full term rehabilitation of sick, injured, orphaned native Eastern Grey Kangaroos to allow the recovery of the EGK's population, which has continued to rapidly decline.
Report 2, page 5, first paragraph, then contradicts Report 1, claiming that 'this licence specifically excludes Eastern Grey Kangaroos because of their abundance in the ACT', which is describing the Rehabilitation licence.
The ACT is the only state in Australia that cruelly prevents the full term rehabilitation of our sick, injured, orphaned Native EGK's.
The advisory council is made up of the kangaroo commercial industry, farmers, rspca, (who categorise our native EGK's as feral on their website, and insist on cruel killing, then claim that the inhumane killings are humane) etc, all who have a serious conflict of interest with kangaroos, and want them to be driven to extinction, with the mentality that 'wildlife can't live amongst humans' which was quoted to Nora Preston by the head ranger of TAMS, and the local government who was in charge of the environment file at the time, with absolutely no regard to the destruction they were causing to our environment, conservation of, or the animal rights and welfare.
It is time to put the environment, conservation of, and wildlife first, to be educated, come back into this century, civilisation, and start acting like civilised, educated people.
For animal welfare reasons, the Rehabilitation licence must be amended and to reinstate the full term rehabilitation of sick, injured, orphaned Native EGK's.
To prevent road kills, the shooroo needs to be modified, so that it can be activated in the vehicles, when travelling at any speed.
Saving and Caring for our Environment, Conservation, and all of our Native Wildlife.
Kylie Minogue is a global pop superstar and one of the most notable woman of her generation in Europe and Australia.
She has sold millions of records, performed for royalty and made sure that the worlds population really cant get her out of their heads.
229. Anti Laser Ban
Laser attacks on aircraft have been increasing to alarming levels lately. There is now talk of imposing bans on portable and handheld laser devices, as the NSW police minister as well as Federal police vow to take action.
The signatories of this petition believe that a blanket ban on laser devices would be unfair and harmful to those who use them in a safe manner.
230. Adoption Australia : Petitioning the Government to activate changes approved in Nov 2005
This petition will be used to lobby the Federal Government and the Federal Attorney General to pressure them to address and resolve the urgent issues affecting adoptive families in Australia. We are seeking your support.
In November 2005 a lengthy & detailed report was presented by Bronwyn Bishop. It received bipartisan approval & inroads were made by the former government. Since the Rudd govt came to power everything is at a standstill while tensions, costs & abandonments increase. Peoples lives are being turned upside down for no logical reason.
It is a complex situation with a clear path to resolution paved, but now stalled. The petition below captures the main elements.
231. Lisa from Veronicas shouldn't go Anorexic
I just am so angry at lisa from the veronicas lol. well, i think its pretty gross that shes doing this to her body.
why cant she be more like jess and her bf(dean geyer). he's such a hottie. she feels so untouched right now lol.
232. Indigenous Studies for All Australian Students
With the culture and history of the traditional custodians of Australia somewhat neglected since colinisation, it is now time to address this imbalance.
233. Recognise that the America is NOT the only good place in the World!
America is cool, we all know that. But so are other places!
One thing that really annoys me is when people call the American president "leader of the free world". I mean, get over yourself, mate. You rule a COUNTRY, not a PLANET. A very big/cool/rich country, maybe, but still only a country.
And here in the UK, for example, everyone insists on "trying to be the Americans". What happened to national indentity, for God's sake? I like being British, and so should everyone else.
Americans are proud of their country. When I went to Florida last year, they had flags up everywhere. So why can't we be the same?
We can all be proud of who we are and where we come from!
234. War Rock server for Australia!
There are many people living in Australia who would like to play War rock.
Unfortunately we Australians have a disadvantage of being one of the most backward countries in the developed world in terms of internet and broadband capabilities.
Don't let K2 make a example of this by letting almost everyone in the world play War Rock except Australia. Even the Vatican City is supported.
235. Kid Nation Australia Anyone?
Basically? Why shouldn't us Aussie kids be able to have a chance at kid nation in Australia?
236. Revive Australia's space program
In 1967, Australia launched their first satellite, WRESAT. While they may not have used an Australian built rocket (the USA donated a Redstone rocket), the effort was coordinated NOT by the Australian Government, but by CSIRO and the Universities.
Australia, along with the Soviet Union, USA and France, led the way, as it was the fourth country on our planet to insert a satellite into orbit.
Since then our space related activities have been virtually non-existent, largely due to the attitude of Robert Menzies, who oversaw the disassembly of the Woomera space launch facilities.
The only launch vehicle Australia has is built by ASRI, a non-profit organisation, and is capable of sending only up to 100kg into orbit. Compare this to the USA and Russia, who are sending people to into orbit and to the Moon. Even countries such as Iran and South Korea have launch facilities and plans to send up their own satellites.
Australia has no such plans. Australia has no space program. In this era, spaceflight will play a large role, and Australia will not be a part of it, as other countries go on to explore and colonise the Moon and Mars, unless we act now and rebuild our space program.
----------
Please spread awareness and help inspire a generation of scientists and engineers in Australia. It is time for Australia to take the lead - humans to Mars in 10 years!
237. Increase Australian Scientific Research Funding
In 2006, the then incumbent government cut CSIRO's already strained funding, causing jobs to be lost and research and development to slow. The CSIRO has been noted for such achievements as AAS (atomic absorption spectroscopy), gene splicing technology and the polymer banknote.
Although such achievements may be significant, Australia is behind the rest of the developed world in some areas. For example, Australia successfully built and opened their first synchrotron very recently. Prior to the construction of this facility, Australian scientists were required to travel all the way to America to run experiments that necessitated the use of a synchrotron. Other countries have had similar facilities since the 1950s.
Another example, Australia generates over 75% of its electricity from coal, and is the largest greenhouse gas emitter per capita in the world. Approximately 200 million tonnes of carbon dioxide are produced by Australia each year through electricity generation. We have only one nuclear power plant, which is used for research, yet have 30% of the worlds nuclear fuel reserves. Renewable sources of energy only contribute 7% of the electricity to the grid.
The European Union are targeting to invest 3% of their GDP (which totals US$15 trillion), some US$450 billion into scientific research and development per year by 2010.
Australia invests AU$940 million per year in total on scientific research, just 0.09% of our US$1 trillion GDP. This is a pitiful amount compared to most nations.
Not only does CSIRO struggle with their low funding, they also have had to defend against high cost lawsuits brought upon them by such companies as Microsoft, Dell, and Apple who do not want to pay royalties for the use of wireless network technologies in their products, a patent for which was filed by CSIRO in the early 1990s.
Furthermore, if one were to look up countries who have space agencies, they would find that Australia has not achieved human spaceflight, nor do they have space launch capabilities. Australia were once at the forefront in this area, with Woomera being a premier rocket launch facility in the 1950s and 60s.
We spend $26 billion a year on defence, most of which is unnecessary, yet almost nothing on science.
Australia is falling behind, and desperately needs to catch up. A positive future for Australia requires a strong emphasis on science.
238. "I Am Australian" to Replace "Advance Australia Fair" as Anthem
The official version of Australia's current national anthem, "Advance Australia Fair", is:
-Disjointed from a musical perspective.
-Embarrassing from an international political perspective.
-Absurd from an Indigenous Australian perspective.
-Dull and uninviting from an emotional perspective.
-Awkward from a lyrical perspective.
-Dated and missing verses from an historical perspective.
-Divisive from a cultural perspective.
-Girt by a sea of mediocrity from the ALP's minister and member for Rankin Craig Emerson's perspective.
-Boring from retired National's senator Sandy Macdonald's perspective.
-Worth considering a replacement for from the Liberal's member for Fisher Peter Slipper's perspective.
Adding to all this, most Australians know neither the words nor what they mean!
Numerous other patriotic songs would be worthy of replacing "Advance Australia Fair". However many of these songs lack the rhythmic emotion of a high-quality national anthem. Others contain awkward lyrics or words not known by most Australians. The song "I Still Call Australia Home" is well known (having been promoted around the world by a certain business) but it speaks about too many other countries to be Australia's national anthem. Australia's national anthem should be about Australia- not other countries!
Hence, "I Am Australian" (lyrics at end) by Bruce Woodley should be the national anthem of Australia. The following reasons amongst many others support this proposal:
1) It unites Australians.
2) It is well known to Australians.
3) Its meaning is clear and its words understandable.
4) It celebrates Australians from all walks of life.
5) It respects Indigenous Australians and other cultures.
6) The words are easy to learn.
7) It celebrates iconic Australians.
8) It is passionately patriotic yet inclusive of naturalised Australians.
9) It welcomes new Australians (already being in use at citizenship ceremonies).
10) It is already sung by many on national holidays such as Australia Day.
11) It is already sung at major sporting events as a sign of what it is to be Australian.
12) It recognises the contributions of both men and women in forging the identity of the nation.
The lyrics are as follows:
VERSE 1:
I came from the dream time
From the dusty red soil plains
I am the ancient heart
The keeper of the flame
I stood upon the rocky shore
I watched the tall ships come
For forty thousand years I'd been
The first Australian
CHORUS:
We are one but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice
I am - You are - We are Australian
VERSE 2
I came upon the prison ship
Bowed down by iron chains
I cleared the land, endured the lash
And waited for the rains
I'm a settler; I'm a farmer's wife
On a dry and barren run
A convict then free man
I became Australian
VERSE 3
I'm the daughter of a digger
Who sought the mother lode
The girl became a woman
On a long and dusty road
I'm a child of the depression
I saw the good times come
I'm a bushy
I'm a battler
I am Australian
{Repeat CHORUS}
VERSE 4
I'm a teller of stories
I'm a singer of songs
I am Albert Namatjira
And I paint the ghostly gums
I'm Clancy on his horse
I'm Ned Kelly on the run
I'm the one who waltzed Matilda
I am Australian
VERSE 5
I'm the hot wind from the desert
I'm the black soil of the plains
I'm the mountains and the valleys
I'm the drought and flooding rains
I am the Rock, I am the Sky
The Rivers when they run
The Spirit of This Great Land
I am Australian
{Notes on the lyrics:
1) Alternatively, the chorus may be sung between each verse.
2) The last verse has been slightly adjusted by capitalising certain words. As the "Rock" refers to Uluru and "This Great Land" refers to Australia it is appropriate to capitalise these words. In the cases of the other words, this may be interpreted as either a poetic personification or a connection to certain characters of the dreaming of Indigenous Australians.
3) The term "dream time" has been retained due to the respect for ancient ways shown in the first verse. Should Indigenous Elders regard it as offensive, it may be altered to "dreaming".}
239. Have Sevendust Do Their Own Sideshows In Australia
Sevendust are a 5 piece Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band from Atlanta Georgia, USA with a fanbase spread right across the world. They have recorded 6 albums and have been captivating live audiences for over 14 years.
The last time they toured Australia was in 2004, and since this time they have recorded another 2 albums, but haven't visited our shores since, leaving many fans waiting in anticipation of when they'll return.
Last week it was announced that Sevendust will be the direct support act for the upcoming Ozzy Osbourne tour in March, but no other shows were announced.
As many tickets to this show have already been sold prior to last weeks announcement, many Aussie Sevendust fans will be deprived of seeing the boys again after waiting so long, and wonder how long it will be before they tour down under again.
240. New Australian National Anthem
Let's face it, who knows the Australian National Anthem. Not the first verse, because that’s a no brainer but the rest of it?
To be honest, I don’t and when it goes past that first verse (as it rarely does) I stand there shrugging my shoulders. Then it occurred to me, let's change it.
Change it to something people know and are proud to sing and then across the radio came Land Down Under by Men At Work. It doesn’t get much more Australian than that! Not only is it a fantastic song but any true blue Aussie knows the words! Here are the lyrics for you to consider.
Land Down Under - Men At Work
Travelling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,
"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,
"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
Lying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said,
"Oh! Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
