241. Allow Pets in Campus Lodge

Jan 28, 2006

Animals should be allowed in Campus Lodge. There should be a limit as to the size and weight of animals. For example, a dog should not exceed the weight of 15 pounds.

If there is any evidence of a dog staining any of the carpets or furniture, it is the pet's owners responsibility to one hundred percent replace what was damaged.

Also, before moving out of the apartment, there should be a complete carpet and furniture cleaning, all paid for by the owner of the animal.

244. BAN FIREWORKS FROM PUBLIC SALE

Every year, fireworks go on sale mid October. IT is now law that fireworks are NOT to be let off after 11pm.

This is impossible to police, and this year I have endured fireworks in my street after midnight. Fireworks are now let off from mid October until mid November. On the 5th November, all animal owners take extreme precautions to protect their animals from the devastating effects fireworks can have. However, all undersigned animal owners and/or parents feel fireworks are a menace and a danger and should be experienced only at a PUBLIC ORGANISED DISPLAY.

There is no place for them in gardens and streets.

245. Termination, Prosecution and Conviction of Responsible Individual(s) of Zania's Cruelty

October 31, 2005

Mauled dog faces death after being left untreated at Lebanon Animal Control Shelter.

Seeking termination, prosecution and conviction of Josh Greer and individual(s) responsible for animal cruelty and abuse of Zania.

Zania, a 4-year-old black Labrador retriever, was a playmate to a 4-year-old boy living in Mt. Juliet. She was picked up Friday, October 14, 2005, for running loose and placed in the Lebanon Animal Control facility because Mt. Juliet has no facility of its own. Zania was placed in a pen on Saturday with three other dogs, who for several hours, continuously attacked her until she was found lying in a pool of blood Sunday afternoon.

Zania was removed from the pen, hosed off (to wash off all the blood), and left outside on the concrete floor. She lay on the cold (50 degrees), wet concrete until an anonymous phone call was made to the Director of the Humane Association of Wilson County, a nonprofit, private agency with no ties to Lebanon Animal Control.

The dog was lying apparently lifeless on the concrete floor inside a chain link fenced enclosure when the Director arrived. She discovered the dog was still alive and called the Police Department, who came with an animal control officer 30 minutes later. After another 30 minute delay, they took the dog to the Lebanon Animal Hospital. The Director confirmed with the animal control officer that Zania was a healthy dog when she was picked up. The animal control officers also confirmed they were aware Zania had been injured earlier by the other dogs, but had made the decision to let her recover on her own.

Dr. Craig, the attending veterinarian, verified Zania was in shock, had a subnormal temperature, blood loss and would not have survived over night if she had been left untreated at the animal control facility. Details of his report and pictures of Zania can be seen at:
http://www.oilydog.org/lab.htm. There is also another article at:
http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051020/NEWS01/510200410/1192/COUNTY.

When the story first came to light, Zania was facing leg amputation. Now, she is facing death because of the cruelty inflicted by Josh Greer.

According to Tennessee Code, Title 39 Criminal Offenses, Chapter 14 Offenses Against Property Part 2-Animals, under Section 39-14-202, Cruelty to animals:
(2) Fails unreasonably to provide necessary food, water, care or shelter for an animal in the person's custody;
(3) Abandons unreasonably an animal in the person's custody; and
(4) Transports or confines an animal in a cruel manner can be found committing an offense under this section and is a Class A misdemeanor.

In addition, 39-14-212 Aggravated cruelty to animals - (a) A person commits aggravated cruelty to animals when, with aggravated cruelty and with no justifiable purpose, such person intentionally kills or intentionally causes serious physical injury to a companion animal. Under this section, as of June, 2004, offenses carry felony level penalties. We believe these codes have been violated.

It is not acceptable or humane to place dogs with unknown histories in cages together especially with breeds known for fighting. Zania was denied shelter with no protection from the elements as she lay dying, compassion in her handling while in Josh Greer's and other animal control officers care, protection when she was locked and confined in a pen with a breed of animals known to fight with no means of escape or protection, and immediate vet care as she lay in critical condition. She was confined and abandoned in a cruel manner that now threatens her life.

Zania has suffered enough. Our prayers and thoughts are with Zania and her family. We respectfully ask that you act on behalf of Zania and other animals who have found themselves in similar situations to put a stop to the cruelty and abuse that exists at Lebanon Animal Control. Josh Greer and those individual(s) responsible for Zania's cruelty and abuse must be terminated. No justifiable purpose can be found in the reckless, cruel, and abusive manner in which the animal conrol officers behaved in the care, handling and decision making for Zania. We therefore petition that they be prosecuted and convicted to the fullest extent of the law.

On behalf of Zania and all animals, we thank you.

246. Make vasectomies and tubal ligations for animals more widely available in the UK

A lot of animals end up being put down every year due to the fact that people are irresposible and/or they don't take steps to have their animal companions sterilised.

Part of the problem is probably down to the fact that very few (if any) vets offer people the opportunity to have vasectomies or tubal ligations performed on their companions (some people may consider these options as they are less invasive then spaying and castrating animals, and they don't have the same hormornial side-effects).

247. Stop the Rodeo in Martin County!

This petition is being started due to the public outcry of inhumane treatment to animals. The following letter aims to stop the rodeo in Martin County.

Robert L. Crowder. Sheriff
Martin County Office of Sheriff
800 SE Monterey Road
Stuart, Florida 34994

September 10, 2005

Dear Sheriff Crowder,

We are the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of the Treasure Coast. As such, we are dismayed to learn the office of sheriff is sponsoring a harsh, cruel event which inflicts pain on animals. The forthcoming rodeo fund raiser for the Florida Sheriff Youth Ranches is unacceptable and out of character to all the positive things you have done for animals in this community. Our organization is getting complaints about this on a daily basis. It would be an understatement to state that many people are very upset.

Rodeo attractions including tight straps about the abdomen and genitals of horses to make them "buck", the use of electric prods with electric currents to get the horses and cattle running, chasing and roping/tying of cattle and young calves are just a few of the cruel, painful events instilled on these victimized animals.

Encouraging inhumane episodes, especially in full view of children, is contradictory to our mission of kindness and compassion for all creatures. It is especially disturbing since many animal organizations here have worked together with your office to prohibit inhumane acts on animals in Martin County.

Martin County Animal Control Division protects the community against cruelty to animals, while Martin County Sheriff Department promotes it.

250. Ban Animal Testing

Animals are routinely cut open, poisoned, and forced to live in barren steel cages for years, although studies show that because of vast physiological variations between species, human reactions to illnesses and drugs are completely different from those of other animals.

Today's non-animal research methods are humane, more accurate, less expensive, and less time-consuming than animal experiments, yet change comes slowly and many researchers are unwilling to switch to superior technological advances.

Animal experimentation not only is preventing us from learning more relevant information, it continues to harm and kill animals and people every year.

251. MAKE ANIMAL NEUTERING COMPULSERY BY LAW

July 3, 2005

This petition is to persuade all the high up people who can change things to make it a legal requirement to have animals neutered.

There are far too many unwanted animals in the UK, either soon to be destroyed or are in small pens in rehoming centres. This should not happen. By neutering animals we are stopping more unwanted animals.

252. Stop cruel chicken slaughter

This petition was created on june 14, 2005. It is supposed to help show people how cruel and cold hearted kfc is.

Chickens raised for KFC are taken away from their families and stuffed into sheds with tens of thousands of other birds. (Think of how scared you'd be if you were locked inside a crowded room with thousands of people you didn't know!) The birds aren't allowed any fresh air or sunshine, and they can barely move (each chicken has to make do with a space smaller than one sheet of notebook paper).

Once they're fattened up, the birds are thrown into tiny crates and trucked to the slaughterhouse. Some chickens fall off the trucks and are left to die alongside the road. The frightened birds who make it to the slaughterhouse are killed when they are just 6 weeks old—still babies!

Chickens are probably the most abused animals on the face of the planet. They suffer any number of cruelties, including being left by the hundreds of thousands to starve to death, having their sensitive beaks seared off with hot blades, being crammed 11 birds to a tiny cage along with the decomposing corpses of other chickens, and dying in huge numbers from long journeys in extreme weather conditions.

Basically, any and all abuse is allowable when it comes to chickens, who are, in fact, remarkable animals with distinct personalities and intelligence that, if allowed to develop, is as advanced as that of cats and dogs. Most importantly, they feel pain, just as we do.Animals Routinely Sliced Open and Scalded While Still Conscious.

At slaughter, chickens are dumped from cages like so many rubber balls and then SNAPPED by their weakened and sometimes broken legs into metal shackles before their heads are passed through an electrically charged water bath that immobilizes them but often does not render them unconscious.

The workers who hang the animals must work so quickly (assembly-line style) that animals are frequently injured. When the water "baths" are set below the level required to kill them, as they often are, the animals (unless they have died from stress and abuse before they're even shackled) are alive, conscious, and bleeding to death after their throats are slit, and they enter the scalding tank ( scalding hot water for feather removal) still conscious.

Many of them flap about and thus miss both the immobilization bath and the automated and manual (human) neck-slicers and are still completely conscious when they are scalded to death.

253. The Treatment of Dogs and Cats in Korea

The Treatment of Dogs and Cats in Korea.

Should the brutal treatment and death of a dog or cat concern us more than if the same were done to a cow, or a sheep, or a chicken. It shouldn't, but animals that the "Western world" looks upon as companion animals are treated very differently in Korea.

Many Koreans still believe that if one eats dog meat from dogs that have been tortured to death, it will make them more sexually active. The marketing of dog meat as a health food was initiated and perpetuated by the dog meat dealers to keep their billion dollar businesses going. The rationale behind savagely beating a dog to death lies in the primitiveness that when a dog is beaten they produce high levels of adrenaline hence the selling of their meat as a kind of "natural" viagra for impotence and vitality!

This adrenaline rush is achieved by hanging dogs from ropes on trees and leaving them to slowly strangle to death, and then while still alive, their fur is blowtorched off.

Cats do not hold any position of affection in Korean society. They are not eaten as dogs are but many attempts have been made to eradicate them, not by humane methods, but rather by beating the animals to death in sacks or, in some cases, boiling them alive in large pressure cookers to supply the insatiable demand for another "herbal" remedy - although clearly animals do not fall into this category.

The Korean government does not enforce its animal welfare laws so people make an assumption that farming dogs, slaughtering them and selling their meat is legal. It is not. The sale and cooking of dogs is illegal under Korea's food and sanitation laws.

Imagine being thrown into a cage full of other dogs. A cage so small there's no room to move and let alone stand. A cage so cramped there is no way you can get water or food .. assuming it was even provided to you. One day you are transported in the cage to a dog market.. your last journey, although you don't realise it.

You're pulled out of the cage by a rope tied around your neck and then held by that rope and beaten over and over again on the head with a metal stick...you're bruised, bleeding and concussed. you have no idea what fate has in store for you...you see a man approaching with a long stick..he jabs it into your side, you a feel a wave of electricity surge through your body. you're jabbed over and over again until your last grasps of air are extinguished from your body..

The dead, limp carcass of the dog is then transported again by motorcycle to the processing factory where eager purchasers look out for what they'll put on their dinner table tonight.

The lifeless body is dragged out of the cage and dumped into a huge pot of boiling water amongst other helpless dogs who have received the same fate. The pot is a machine with a fast whirlpool action that spins round and round to remove the fur off the tortured dog.

Once the fur has been removed (a delicacy in itself), the dog is scorched using a blowtorch. The process is now finally complete. The dog now, bearing little resemblance to anything other than a slab of meat is transported back to the shop...

Now, imagine being thrown into sack, pounded against the ground and thrown into a pot of boiling water - trying to scramble out of a pain that singes your body, only to be pushed back under water until you finally lose consciousness.

The pot is a large pressure cooker used to liquefy cats to produce a tonic unfoundedly believed to cure rheumatism and a variety of other ailments.

Now stop imagining. This is not fiction. This is real. What you have just read happened to over 2,600,000 dogs and cats in Korea last year...and if nothing is done, it will happen to over 2,600,000 dogs and cats in Korean again this year.

In fact, the torturing you've just imagined is only a fraction of the cruelty that occurs to dogs and cats in Korea. Cultural myth dictates that dog and cat meat/soups are cures for various ailments and that the more adrenalin you can circulate through an animal's body during its last moments of life ie through making the death a more painful and gruesome one, makes the meat 'taste better'. This encourages dog farmers to enhance the suffering of the dogs...a killing that is devoid of any humanity.

Korean culture as with many other Asian cultures embraces the condemning practice of slaughtering animals for their own consumption, regardless of how the animal suffers in the process. The distinction between the killings in the East and the killings in the West is that the West follow stricter guidelines as to the method of slaughtering and are more heavily regulated by Animal Welfare Laws.

In 1984, the Korean Ministry of Health did outlaw the sale of dog meat, however has done very little, if anything to enforce a law that was only introduced to satisfy the public outcry at the time.

We need to do something to raise the awareness of people living in these countries to a level where they think twice about the validity of their traditions and the means adopted to satisfy them. We need to challenge the way that Koreans currently view their companion animals and force the government to take a more proactive stance against these cruel death sentences.

Source: Korea Animal Protection Society (KAPS)

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Please write a letter to the Korean government officials below to take a more active stance in fulfilling their governmental responsibilities in enforcing a law they have already introduced and thereby prosecute people who sell and slaughter cats and dogs for human consumption.

Korea is holding the World Cup next year and will therefore suffer greatly if they are seen to be treating their companion animals without humanity or regard for their welfare. We HAVE to put pressure on the Korean government to clean up their act now or else face international condemnation when the spotlight's on them during the World Cup. For the 2,600,000 plus dogs and cats in Korea awaiting their fate on death row.we owe it to them to put pen to paper and give up 5 minutes of our time to make a difference in this world.

255. South Koreans, Save the Whales!

By the 1970s, commercial whaling had caused 8 out of the 10 great whale species to be commercially extinct. The International Whaling Commission's (IWC's) ban on commercial whaling went into effect in 1986. Since then, pro-whaling countries have been trying to lift the ban and continue to kill whales by using exceptions to the ban.

Most species of whales are still endangered and there is no humane way to kill a whale. Whales suffer horrible and often prolonged deaths due to brutal and unreliable killing methods used by whalers. They also suffer from being caught in fishing nets of commercial fisheries targeting other species. Instead of making an effort to safely release them, they are brought onboard to die and to be sold for human consumption.

The annual IWC meeting will be held in Ulsan, South Korea in 2005. South Korea has voted against protecting whales. Please sign this petition to let your government know that South Koreans care about whales and about animal welfare and want them to vote in favor of protecting these magnificent animals.

256. Ban the hunt in Ireland

The hunt has been banned in many countries but not Ireland. It is a cruel inhumane sport that kills innocent animals so posh rich people on their fat horses can have some fun. This is not right.

The wildlife in Ireland are incredibly rare and the hunt is absolutely wiping them out. There are other ways in which these people can still take part in their barbaric "tradition" as they call it like scent hunting where the hounds follow the scent, not the animal and everyone can still have a jolly good time! However the fat cats in the government want to keep it up because the english come over here for it and that improves the tourism wwhile killing our wildlife population!

257. Fighting For Animal Rights

Through the years, ciggarette and cleaning product factories, pet shops, etc. has been mistreating animals.

Cigarrtes factories force animals to smoke the cigars for a long time, to see what happens, and owners of cleaning product factories must test their products on something, so they choose animals to test them on. They drop chemicals that the product contains in the mouths and eyes of rabbits and monkeys. And, many of the times the animal is greatly injured, and even died painfully.

And pet shops only provide small cages for the cats and dogs, that are barely larger than their bodies. We must stop this unjust action now!

Me, Gabriela Cano, my sister, Carlina Cano, and my companion, Hannah Jones have made this petition to stop this cruel act towards animals.

259. Bad stuff at Iams and Eukanuba

Iams/Eukanuba does research on animals for their products which may not sound bad, but they first spay female cats, and make them eat so much food and make them unhealthily fat. They then starve the cats to do research about weight loss.

They also do stuff to puppies. They inject toxins into the puppies bodies so their kidneys don't function as well. They then kill the puppies.

270. Remove restrictions and tax on firearm noise suppressors

Firearm noise suppressors are used in countries like Finland to reduce noise pollution and to protect the hearing of people and animals. These devices are not weapons, and should not be treated as such. Most suppressors reduce noise levels from a level that would cause hearing damage to a safe level. If a criminal wanted to commit a nefarious act with a firearm, they wouldn't go through the trouble and expense of buying a registered suppressor, when they could build one easily and for very little cost. The waiting period for a legal suppressor is around 3 to 6 months, and there is a $200 transfer tax. Suppressors, often referred to as "silencers", do not make firearms silent, they only make them safer. Also, suppressors reduce recoil, providing a great benefit for those who cannot handle heavy recoil.

In Finland the government encourages the use of suppressors to reduce noise pollution, hearing loss, and the number of hearing aids the government has to buy. Before congress passed a law restricting suppressors, using a suppressed firearm was considered the polite way to shoot.
