Stop the Aerial Shooting of Brumby Horses in Australia. Make your voice heard! Sign our petition! Aerial slaughter recommenced in Carnarvon Gorge, Queensland Australia in 2008.

Over 6000 horses have now been slaughtered by helicopters in Carnarvon Gorge Northern Queensland. More are targeted. Autopsy reports state that four bullets were used to kill each horse, ages range from foals, yearlings to young adults. Now is surely the time for Qld. EPA to work through these issues and introduce planned management for the future. Will this happen ??? So far Qld. Government is ignoring this issue. Australia’s shame continues.

Despite the efforts of animal Welfare groups including the RSPCA, the carnage continues. In other nations wild horse sanctuaries and controlled breeding programs are an integral part of Government Policy; here, in Australia such policies are non-existent, bullets are the easy solution.

UPDATE: It is with tremendous sadness that we must report that the orphan colt from the Frazier Downs cull, “Jimminy”, died on 28/8/08 after contracting a sudden and serious infection. He was otherwise doing very well but obviously had a lowered immune system after everything he’d been through and just couldn’t fend off germs. Over 2 days 672 horses were shot in an aerial cull that has distressed many of the local community. It is understood that that RSPCA will be investigating the matter.

The Frazier Downs travesty highlights the need for governments to find better, longer term and more humane management plans for wild horses. Aerial culling of horses is banned in New South Wales, and in two NSW National Parks, the Guy Fawkes River and the Oxley Rivers parks, horses are passively trapped and given a second chance by groups such as Save the Brumbies who care for the removed horses and adopt them out to the public. “And we can even do better” says Jan Carter. “We want to start using the fertility control vaccine PZP on our own New England Brumby Sanctuary and gain direct experience in what I believe is the future for wildlife management” We call for all state and federal governments to put an end to outdated and barbaric wild horse management and develop responsible, long term and humane management plans.

6000 horses have already lost their life in winter 2008. Despite the efforts of animal Welfare groups including the RSPCA, the carnage continues.

We appeal to the animal loving public to help stop this brutality immediately by signing this petition. Horses destined to be killed by aerial shooting in Australia, die by torturous deaths, by bleeding out from 4+ separate bullets or tiny foals starving to death without their dams.
