The Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour serves as a tribute to the local people who fought in the First World War. Planted in August 1918, it served as a welcome home to those soldiers lucky enough to return.
The Avenue is going to be split in half by a proposed road extension and diamond shaped roundabout. At least 8 trees are going to be destroyed and probably more. We understand that trees need replacing due to disease, drought and dangerousness, however they should remain in the same formation they were planted. Once this roundabout is built there is nothing stopping the systematic removal of other trees.
This is disrespectful to the memories of our soldiers and to our pioneers who felt moved by the heroics of their sons, fathers, cousins, neighbours that they wanted to commemorate them.
The Avenue has remained for 92 years in it's current formation. We ask that it remain in it's current formation for at least another 92 years.
We, the undersigned, call on the Federal Government of Australia and State Government of Victoria to intervene in the proposed Woolpack Road extension and the devastating effect this extension will have on the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour.
