Reform Shared Parenting Legislation

Target: parents
Background (Preamble):
In 2006 shared parenting legislation opened the way for the assumption of shared parental responsibility and has seen an increase in the rates of 50/50 contact for children of separated/divorced parents with the presumption that this was in the best interest of the child.

Current research is showing that increasing numbers of children in these situations are experiencing higher incidences of mental illness and are being exposed to increasing levels of family violence as parents are forced into more frequent contact with each other through "joint" responsibility.
Petition:
We, the undersigned, call on the Federal Government of Australia to reform the current shared parenting legislation.

As children are increasingly suffering mental anguish and witnessing increasing levels of family violence, we ask for legislation that does not assume that equal contact is in the best interests of the child.

We ask that each case be assessed individually and that the interests of the parent be considered secondary to those of the child.
