Description/History:
The proposed East-West Road Tunnel, from the Eastern Freeway, under the inner-north to the Tullamarine Freeway, and then down through Kensington to the inner-west, will not solve any of Melbourne's transport problems.
Building more roads is not going to decrease congestion; it will only lock in our dependence on the car. In this climate change emergency, a $10 billion greenhouse gas polluting tunnel is a ridiculous suggestion. And yet the Brumby Labor government forges ahead with its plans to ruin parkland and build smoke stacks in Kensington, Parkville and Clifton Hill to make room for Eddington's short-sighted vision.
How about $10 billion to pull our Public Transport system into the 21st century?

We, the undersigned, call on the State Government of Victoria to immediately shelve plans for an East-West Road Tunnel in Melbourne and to invest the equivalent funds for such a project, into the development of a world-class public transport system that takes into account equitable access to services in Melbourne's growth corridors.
